I'm finally rid of this defective phone I bought, but was afraid I would be stuck with it cos I could not find a way to factory reset it as my data was already on the phone. But I followed the steps, bought the exact same keyboard and the phone came up on my monitor. And I was able to reset it. Now I can return it and get my money back. Makes me really happy. Blessings

I might be lucky, but when pulled out the stylus, it woke up the phone or screen haptic have you. From there, I used my stylus and did my pattern on the green screened phone. Since it's become a habit, I got it in the first try. Then, Samsung Dex popped up on my monitor and I had to accept to use it. I just poked around with the stylus and eventually hit where the accept button was. From there I was in. And everytime I hook my phone up to the monitor now, the phone appears as it used to with the pattern lock. Using a mouse, I drag and complete it and I'm in. Hope you get as lucky as me.

@@DavidSmith-dd3vkI should have mentioned I have a Samsung Note (10 plus) phone. The Note series includes S Pens. If you have a Galaxy phone, the stylus was included later. I guess not on your model unfortunately.

I followed your old video instructions, and was able to recover all my stuff, now 6 months later; I broke the 2nd and had to buy a 3rd phone. This time after clicking next to transfer Google account it then says, “Error 500”, I can click next and it looks like my data moved, but not most of my apps or screen settings, (even tried to move the original phone data, same results), Any ideas?? ok, so I purchased all the things needed to do this. The phone that I want to get my data off is a Samsung Flip 5. The problem is that my internal screen has a big black blob in the middle and I can only see the edges, mostly. When this happened, my phone "went crazy" after the black blob appeared. It started, by itself trying to unlock itself by keying numbers...it almost looked as if someone was hacking it...but they weren't. Then it was auto-dialing phone numbers and opening web pages all on its own. I finally removed the SIM card.
Now to the present time...I have connected everything as your wonderful video outlines. My phone projects the lock screen onto the monitor so that part works. I am getting the message on the outer screen of my Flip 5 that says "Too many attempts, try again in 23 hours and 47 minutes, etc. My questions are: 1. Do I need to put the SIM card back in the phone for this to work? 2. Any other tricks to make the lock screen come unlocked? I know and remember my 6-digit passcode. Thanks in advance for your advice and help.
I think what has happened is the touch layer was wrecked and it input a bunch of random things on the lock screen that caused the 'Too many attempts' thing, you could wait 24 hours and then connect the phone to the monitor and keyboard and see if you can unlock the phone.
And to answer your question:
1. You don't need a SIM card to do this.
2. Since you've got the flip, you can try unlocking from the cover-screen and then open the phone while connecting it to the external monitor, that should also work.
@@TechGuyCharlie Thanks so much for your reply. I have tried every day. I have to wait because it says to try again in 24 hours. So, it does reset and I can even see the numerical keypad on the outer screen. It will let me use the Logitech all-in-one keyboard you recommended or even let me type in on the outer screen. Either way, it locks it again for 24 hours after only one try. My amateur theory is that the damaged touch layer still generates "trys" and keeps me locked out. I wish there was a way to bypass or disconnect the touch function.
I have a problem where the grayscreen with the lock symbol does not show up when i connect to the screen. I have a S20 FE and have used Dex before, but my phone was turned off and om, so I dont know if that’s the problem

Just exit DeX and you will see the screen of your phone on the external monitor.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It is frustrating that the smart switch app will not work in Samsung Dex, it would have made things much easier for phone data recovery. Is this just a security feature or is there another reason?
I was thinking the same thing! I have no idea why the smart switch app does not work in DeX or why Samsung didn't make it compatible, pretty sure there might be a reason behind it which only Samsung knows.

Its impossible to unlock a phone with a pattern lock, if the touch screen works, you can give it a try, but most likely you wont be able to.. the only way to recover is to get the screen fixed.
apperently this doesnt work with phones that are not of S series samsung on the Samsung side of the phones. How true is this? Can i do this with a samsung a51 5g?
That is correct, apparently your phone needs to support video out through its USB C port, I havent owned an A series smartphone, so I cant cross check it, so if the a51 supports video out, this method will work, if it does not, then it wont, sadly the only option would be to get the screen replaced :(

RIP, its impossible to recover anything from a water damaged motherboard, you can but will need to contact professional data recovery service, which will cost more than a new phone.

There is no way to recover data if you've forgotten the password, the only way to re-use the phone is to do a factory reset.

My guess it the A71 5G does not support HDMI via USB, other than this there is no way to copy data off the phone, you will have to get the screen repaired or have a professional data recovery service do it for you, but those are expensive.

Didn't work for me. My husband's phone (with a working screen) showed up, but when I plug mine in (with a broken screen) I get an audible tone, but nothing 4:48 at all is visible on monitor.
Hey, which phone are you trying to connect to the monitor? It might be that it's one of those models which does not support HDMI through USB C.

On some apps, yes. It depends on the app policy, some allow their data to be transferred, some don't.
I had set password in my phone which I forgot.. is there any way to recover data for a samsung phone??. I don't have a backup account set. Any other option apart from factory reset? Please help @techguycharlie
There is no way to unlock a phone with a forgotten lock screen password/pin, this protection is there for a reason, or else it would be easy to copy photos/videos and other data from stolen phones. There is no other way than a factory data reset.
i get the lock icon on the tv and then nothing happens, tapping the spacebar on the wireless keyboard does nothing, any help...
Unplug the USB receiver and plug it back in (while the dongle is plugged in) see if it works then!

The phone is pretty much gone, if the water has damaged the display then, I guess it has also come in contact with the motherboard, you will need to give your phone to a qualified tech for aftermarket repair, or have Samsung fix it, which is going to be quite expensive.
when i connect an adapter it always starts dex how do i force just hdmi signal and not dex
You should be able to use the mouse and keyboard normally in dex, so just exit dex and you will be able to use the phone normally on the external screen.

Then there is no way to unlock the phone, to unlock with a swipe code, you need at least one, the screen or the touch to be functional.

Yup! For some odd reason, smart switch does not work in DeX.

It doesn't, works only with phones that support video out through USB C.

If you have a pattern lock, and it shows this grey screen with the appearing and disappearing lock symbol, you can try to plug in (or out) a keyboard, and you ll get ~0.5 seconds of screen view , sometimes. Good luck everyone

There is no way to unlock a phone with pattern lock if you've got a broken screen. Get your screen replaced if you want to recover the data.
