Thank you for producing this informative piece.I just purchased a Samsung USB Type-c 128GB Flash Drive to use as a backup for my Samsung S23 Ultra. To be honest, I have a limited knowledge of the technology that I use every day because I fortunately or unfortunately am of the second decade of the Baby Boom Generation. High tech in my formative years was an HB pensil,so it's been a steep learning curve for 70 years. Having watched this particular video has empowered me to move forward with my plan to backup my phones data using a flash drive. Hooray and a tiger for me! Cheers
I find this funny. I just got a new S23 Ultra replacing my Note10+ and need to backup everything from the past 5 yrs from the Note. I have sooo much crap on it that I didn’t want to clutter my new phone with 😅 Thanks for a super helpful video!
Another thing you can do is dump the entire contents of your old phone like photos, videos on a computer, and copy over the rest of the stuff on to the new one, I usually do this.
Thanks! this is really useful. I am going to buy a flash drive to back up my Samsung s20+ as it is starting to get screen issues which are worrying me. This video is reassuring as it shows how easy it is to do. Thanks again!
EXCELLENT video, just the tech solution I've been looking for. Question: if I perform another backup, say a month later to the SAME USB-C Flash Drive, is the previous backup completely overwritten OR are only the newest files ("deltas") added to the existing backup? Thanks, F1
@Nezello Watching others' youtube videos, it appears a different 3rd alternative occurs. Multiple backups to the same thumb drive (or any external drive) are saved in a newly named folder(s). So, when restoring from a device that has multiple backups already saved on it, you would then have a choice of which data folder to restore from.
Hi i have a question, when you back up everything, are the Files (example: files, documents, installer files, compressed file, folders) in "My Files" or "File Manager" app saved? Or only the videos and photos? Thx
Yes! absolutely, you can delete them off your phone after taking a backup they will be safe on the USB drive. BUT, if you are taking a backup just to free up space on your phone, then I'd recommend copying the photos and videos from your phone to a computer and then deleting them off your phone, that way you can view them whenever you want.
DAMN, you saved me a TON and TON of headaches trying to transfer my files to an external HD and it was super fast. I even tried the frustrating Smart Switch app and still could not get it. I just transfered every single photo and video into my external HD and then onto my laptop.
this is good. is there a way to backup photos only to an external drive connected by the usb port without encryption? I'm guessing an app will be required, digging around the play store, maybe one of the file manager type apps ?
hi, thanks so much for this super helpful video! can i ask if all messages & media files of whatsapp business will be backup as well? assuming I'm not using google drive but am storing whatsapp messages on the local storage of my phone... thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏
This is a good video with a clear explanation. It certainly looks like transferring all the internal storage, settings and apps would be easy when buying a new phone. However, this does not explain backing up the SD card. I suspect that most people store their photos, music etc. on the SD card and not on internal storage. Can I assume that backing up the SD card cannot be done with this method - direct to a USB drive? You need to copy the SD card files to another storage device and then paste the files onto a new SD card (or just put the SD card from the old phone into a new phone). Thank you for the video
If your phone has an SD card slot, you will see an option to include the files on the SD card. The phone I used to demonstrate doesn't have an SD card slot, so the option isn't there. But if you are transferring everything to a new phone, I would suggest using Samsung's Smart Switch app. It's way more streamlined and does not require a USB drive, I have a video on it: ua-cam.com/video/f2XTifoo1So/v-deo.html
Very well explained kept very plain n simple to the point step by step, I would like you to explain same for s8 trans fer to s10 tab including notepad notes, Thanks
Worked well to back up Samsung to flash drive. I also uploaded flash drive to PC. Charlie's video states you have to sign on to Samsung to decrypt to see files but I could not figure out a way to do this since Samsung app is only on my phone and not on my PC. Any suggestions?
Thanks, I learned a lot on this one and it worked for me the first time. Can multiple backups be put onto one flash drive (without overwriting existing backups)?
Hi, I am an old folk & not very tech savvy. Can u explain how do we regularly back up the content of the phone. Do we use the same USB & plug it into the phone in the same way we do it the 1st time? Then does that mean that what was transferred to the USB the 1st time gets override & the new content now takes over. So if we have deleted some phones from the phone to clear up storage, when we backup the phone with the USB the 2nd time , Will we then lose some of the contents that were originally transferred or backed up into the USB previously but is now not on the phone storage? Please advise. Thank you.
Can you do updates to the orig backup, or do you have to do another complete backup going forward? Then you probably need to delete old backups to have enough room for future ones.
Does it transfer all the individual ringtone and specific notifications for all your contacts too? Smart switch didn't and it's a pain to all setup again.
Just repeat the process and delete older backups to free up space. There is no way to backup only updates. You hsve to either backup everything or only parts you select.
all i want to do is move media clips from my phone that i don't want to delete but want to keep & move them onto a usb device to free up space, can you recommend a SSD flash drive and adapter to use?

I have s10e and have a flash drive that has a regular USB on 1 side and smaller on the other side but it's not small enough. I watched these videos and 1 said to get the usb c to usb otg adapter. I did and it still doesn't work. It fits loosely. What kind of adapter do I need?
Hiii I'm from your sub & appreciate the your videos . And Have Question can you store your important phone datas in flash drive and keep the flash drive with you for 2 or 3 or 4 years, i mean if the phone stolen & backup without viruses came in it (summary: how to keep your flash drive away from viruses) And thank you for your hard work
There is an on-device backup option, but I have never got it to work successfully, I always back everything up to google drive, you can encrypt it if you'd like.
Hi there. Will this backup work on all the files from my old Samsung phone (both internal storage contents + micro sd card storage contents) and transfer them to a newer Samsung phone (with internal storage only)? Your kind advice would be appreciated 😊👍
Yes it will, I've transferred a backup from my old S9+ to a newer S23 Ultra without any issues. Contents of the SD card will be saved to the internal memory of the new phone.
An doubt...does it removes all data when we backup new? Can we use it like to store all new data and it skips to old backup which already backup? Explain this whole in detaill
Thank you for this and all your other informative videos I've used over the years. When I do the next back up on the same USB drive will it overwrite the original, add a total new backup or just update the files that have changed? You may have addressed that on the video but I did not notice. Thank you.
@@TechGuyCharlie That is good to know, thank you for clarifying. I agree as even free backup software include incremental backups so Samsung could probably tweak it easy enough :-)
@TechGuyCharlie Incremental backup of new or changed files only ("Deltas") is CPU intensive and will take MUCH longer to complete. Straight I/O copy depicted in your video is fastest. For additional safeguarding of data, best to use a rotation of several USB-C thumb drives instead of constantly overwriting one thumb drive.
@@Fearless-1That is the one thing missing from Charlie's otherwise comprehensive and concise excellent explanation, the fact that the subsequent back ups overwrite on a USB flash drive and the best way to do a true grandfather, father, son backup is to use multiple flashdrives.
@user-pj4nt9gs6i Its been a couple months ago when I last looked at this subject matter. I think I learned (but have not personally tested yet), additional backups create NEW backup files. The previous backup files will have a different name and therefore, not overwritten. So, when booting up a (new) phone from a backup USB, I think you have the option of picking the backup file to restore from. So, the optimal backup strategy would be multiple backup files spread over multiple USB (or external hard drives).
The backup is already encrypted and protected with your Samsung account's password, I don't think there is a need for any additional password. I hope this helps.
This an awesome video. The first one I clicked on, on the subject. I was looking up a way I could making a physical backup of mainly my videos as I use my phone as my video camera for my UA-cam channel.
Thank you!! But if you want to take a backup of only your videos, then try using the built-in file manager to transfer the videos to a USB drive, its easier and also readable on a PC/TV/Media Player.
can I then upload the encrypted backup to a cloud storage? from the phone ? I dont want to keep the backup on the flash drive, I want to upload the backup to cloud and then erase it from the flash drive. I want to do that all from the phone while traveling.
I havent personally tried this but should be possible, don't see a reason why you cant upload the entire encrypted contents of the USB drive to the cloud.

Hey, I am not using any screen protector on my S23 Ultra, as long as you mishandle your phone, you don't need one, the gorilla glass is strong enough to withstand daily wear and tear.
No, its not necessary for Samsung account to be the same as your Google account, for many years I used a Samsung account which was linked to a different mail address than my Google account, but later on, I moved to a new Samsung account with same mail as my Google account, makes it easier to manage both.
@@TechGuyCharlie thanks sir, i was expecting some kind of authentication when you plug in the hard drive to the computer, but its not the case, correct ?
Hey i have an samsung m11 which doesn't support samsung smart switch. Im trying to transfer to my new samsung s23. Can i use my pc like i transfer all items to pc then i connect new phone and transfer to that one. Is it same or different. Can u plz explain plz
You can, but I could not figure out how to transfer accounts, contacts and settings through the PC method, but you can copy over pretty much everything else like photos, videos, music through your PC. Connect your M11 copy over contents of the internal memory on to your PC, once its done, connect your S23 and dump the copied files of your M11 on to your new S23.
Just a heads up. A Samsung flash drive I used had a very short and thick body. It would not fit into the type C connection all the way and I was in the process of returning it when it dawned on me I had a protective cover on the phone. Once I removed that, the flash drive did go in all the way the the download was successful. My bad for sure!
What is the cause of Samsung screen failures (lines, green screen of death) when the phone screen itself or the phone has no suffered any physical damage? I've heard it has to to with firmware corruption, but is there any way to resolve it when a factory reset cannot be completed (because that process is also corrupted)? Can S series by flashed if Samsung Knox is present and the fuse has been tripped? I want to install a custom OS like Graphene, but my S10E is Qualcomm version and can no longer boot phone to enable developer options.
Both, my Note 10+ and the S10+ have the 'green screen of death' and it happened randomly, it had nothing to do with the firmware update, it just happened on its own. I guess it is some sort of component-level failure like an SMD capacitor or the flex cable going bad. As for custom firmware, I generally avoid flashing it.
This is a Samsung only feature, you can take a backup on Samsung and restore it on the same or another Samsung smartphone! Similarly OnePlus will have its own backup feature.
I am trying to USB backup a Samsung in preparation for rooting. How am I supposed to do this if I need account credentials. The "phone" has no service provider, I brought it from Target-- only use is as a personal wifi device (do things like browse UA-cam, check email, listen to playlists). The only access codes I have are my Gmail password and the lock screen code i'm just backing it up in case rooting goes wrong and I need to restore the phone.
Is it necessary to have a samsung account? Because the backup app can be downloaded from the google play store! and It is usually already installed on the phone. At the same time, it's on a USB stick, can't we create a password code to access our data?
I saw it also allowed something to happen with WhatsApp. I assume once WhatsApp databases have been copied, that it probably wont work until you remove the phone sim from original phone and then insert into the 2nd phone?
Hey, i backed up my phone on samsung cloud. Happend my phone dropped snd stoped working. Restored data to tablet but i got only app new installed but i need to relog everywhere. What is the point of cloud back up if i dont have complete data, what to do?
Its super easy, use the file manager to copy the voice recordings to a flash drive. They are stored in a folder called 'Recordings' in the internal Storage.

I guess it is some sort of component-level failure like an SMD capacitor or the flex cable going bad. As for custom firmware, I generally avoid flashing it.
can I do this on a safe mode android? my phone is not working properly.
Hi I have done the backup on an usb flash drive, but it is not encrypted....i can see every photo or music if connected to a pc....do you know why?
Maybe you have not logged into samsung account while taking backup
Very helpful well explained video - thanks 👍
Thank you! Glad the video was helpful. 😊
Will this work Samsung and one plus phones? Thanks.
This is a Samsung only feature, you can take a backup on Samsung and restore it on the same or another Samsung smartphone! Similarly OnePlus will have its own backup feature.
You are best, thank you 😊🙏
Can those flash drives also back up the micro SD card that is inside of the phone, without the need of a computer?
This is what I would like to know. Also can you transfer music player playlists completely?
I am trying to USB backup a Samsung in preparation for rooting. How am I supposed to do this if I need account credentials. The "phone" has no service provider, I brought it from Target-- only use is as a personal wifi device (do things like browse UA-cam, check email, listen to playlists). The only access codes I have are my Gmail password and the lock screen code
i'm just backing it up in case rooting goes wrong and I need to restore the phone.
Thank you kind sir, been great help!
Very welcome!
Is it necessary to have a samsung account? Because the backup app can be downloaded from the google play store! and It is usually already installed on the phone. At the same time, it's on a USB stick, can't we create a password code to access our data?
Awesome! Didn't know this. Thank you.
Thank you for uploading this video
Thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
Would anybody know after transfer and you sign in to samsuung account how much of the information is samsuung able to see or keep.
Where can I get that Wallpaper you are using? :)
Chuck, are multiple backups to the same USB drive seperate or are they jack off over written like Samsung does?
I saw it also allowed something to happen with WhatsApp. I assume once WhatsApp databases have been copied, that it probably wont work until you remove the phone sim from original phone and then insert into the 2nd phone?

Can i transfer from.voice recorder on my phome to a flash drive?
Its super easy, use the file manager to copy the voice recordings to a flash drive. They are stored in a folder called 'Recordings' in the internal Storage.
