Homesteading like its 1899-A Typical Morning in Our Cabin
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 бер 2018
- In this video we share a typical morning in our home. I touch briefly in this video how we strive for a feeling in our home from a different time, a different century to be precise. Though everything is not time precise in our home, I was left with a flash back of a song from the 80's, "Party like it' s 1999" which led me to my title "Homesteading like it's 1899" wondering if time travel where possible and a homesteader from that time entered our home, would they feel comfortable. Yes, it is late and I am tired as you can tell. But hope you enjoy the video despite the unusual write up.

the idea of getting up by cosy lamplight and snuggling up to read whilst mama makes breakfast, so lovely, makes me so nostalgic, I didn't grow up with this lifestyle but I did have a more traditional upbringing than most people I know, the memories Ill always cherish
The narrator is extremely intelligent, God bless her.
Living simple is hard work and you all do it very well. We are asked often “when are you guys going to retire”. I smile because we are retired we just don’t stop working. Thanks for sharing Lea.
Retired, now that is funny! Never has been a plan :)
So refreshing. Seeing kids learning to tend the animals & structure of the home while still having fun & without all the electronics in their hands. Thank you for sharing a day.
Thank you Marie!
This is awesome! You are lucky to be married to a like minded person, my husband would NEVER agree to do this! I would love it though!
I have a friend who she works on the homestead full time with the kids, and he goes to work at his daily job in town. It was their compromise and both feel valued and productive. That might be an option?🙏
We have that same gold hexagonal lamp in the kitchen at Shofar Mountain. The globes are fragile and hard to come by. Homesteading is hundreds of years old, some things never change-chickens lay eggs. Our homestead is spread out also for farm fitness. I like the phrase neopioneer because we have the best of both worlds:old and new.
We are living a off grid pioneer Homestead style.
The problem is I can't find anyone to help me with things to be built.
I wouldn't change it for the world, though.
I pray the FATHER bless you richly.
I have watched this video many times, sometimes I watch just to relax before bed, so peaceful...ty
Great wisdom, and great plans you have already implemented. Getting children to embrace work is a noble idea but most difficult to achieve...but you made it. You started off from raw land and gradually improving your standard of life on it. An amazing journey for you and us.
Thank you Susan St. James
"We have to work ". So true and thank you for sayin g that . It's a joy to work hard and unto the Lord . Doggy s tired too .
Amen, it is a joy!
What a wonderful life you all are living. Simple living is so much better than the rat race of the modern day living. I long for a life like yours. Thank you for sharing dear sister in Christ.
God bless you Gale!

I'm looking forward to watching your channel ... Homestead Tessie sent me to you. Bless!!
Hi ThePamelapfr! Glad you stopped by!
Love Homestead Tessie
This way of living is goals! I wish more people lived this way, going back to the old simple ways. I dream of homesteading our land one day. We have chickens and plant a garden each year. My mom does canning, wanting to learn that from her. Pretty soon people won't know how anymore!
This is similar to what I strive for with my homesteading. I started out wanting a different lifestyle, but ended up bringing the past to the present. I get to live “off grid” almost every weekend in the summer as a historical reenactor. But more and more it’s creeping into my everyday life. I certainly would feel like I stepped back in time to visit your Homestead. A little bit of vinegar on the newspaper helps brighten up the glass as the soot is removed. Thank you for pointing out that homesteading isn’t a new way of living. Thank you so much for being willing to share your life with us.
B
Thank you B! And thank you for the tip on the vinegar will have to try that! Both Ron and I consider your saying "I certainly would feel like I stepped back in time to visit your Homestead" a true complement as you are a reenactor! It put a smile on our face :)Ron has always wanted to do get involved in the reenactors but just has never has! Blessings!
You are living the lovely peaceful life we are striving for, thanks so much for sharing a part of your Life’s journey with us💕

Hi Leah and family 🤗 What a peaceful morning. So cozy but cold lol. I know how it can get up there in the UP, even in March, I can barely handle lower MI cold weather lol. I was looking around in your videos on how you get your drinking water. I know you have a community well, so I was thinking that was your source of drinking water? Your videos are very relaxing Leah. Thanks for taking us along. Stay safe and take care-Debbie

It's awesome to discover people living like it's a different time period on purpose! I'm doing a variation of it myself, but in the city, in the early 1880's.
I think more folks are desiring the simplicity of it....its nice when you know your not the only one!
That was a delight! Thanks for sharing.

That dog at the end... 😍
We lived like that when we were younger. Had a cook stove, wood, and a 1924 Detroit electric stove, 2 Hoosier cabinets, wood dininer table and chores, a radio brain radio, upright piano, Victrola, porcelain sink with pitcher pump at the R side, a 1938 green Matag washer a wall wood phone we had made to work by Bell Labatory. People who came got a kick out of calling their friends on it, OLD Kodak cameras that we couldnt get film for anymore

Thank you Jerrey, we truly appreciate your viewing and taking time to comment!
You are so right about this not being new, people have been escaping to the countryside for as long as there have been cities. It is called "Back to the Land movements" and the first recorded instance was in "The Epic of Gilgamesh" written over 4,000 years ago and they happened every few decades since. They have been called lots of things, "The Good life", "Back to the Land", "Counter Culture", "Flower Power", "Victory Gardens", "Living on the Land", “simple living,” “intentional living,” “sustainable living,” “slow living" etc. The one thing they all had in common was an upheaval of some sort, war or plague or economic collapse or political strife, the "New Homesteading" movement started with the economic collapse for 2008. What it is fighting against is found in the quote from The Servile State, "the control of the production of wealth is the control of human life itself."
I also light my wood stove in the mornings, have my coffee, and devotional/Bible study.Enjoy the peace and quiet before the start of the day. I tend to light my oil lamps in the evenings. Your videos are such a blessing.
Thank you Diane!
Good Morning, Love this video. It is so peaceful and yet so much fun. The children are so cute. Love the animals. Thanks for sharing...God Bless...Dar
Thank you Darlene! Blessings!
Newspaper is less harsh on the glass than soapy water..hmmm I'm going to have to think about that one :) THIS video reminded me I need to get back into the word! I thanked God for your example
Thank you mic jam. I guess I should clarify that it is less harsh on the lamp chimney glass, though a little water and vinegar mix for regular glass works lovely! I pray that you will be blessed in the Word and the peace of the one true God will be upon you :)
Homestead Tessie suggested your page. I'm looking forward to watching your videos.
Glad you are here!
Lea, I love watching the outdoors you post you have beautiful land and the boys are just so happy. You know it is like walking into the past and I love it! It's quiet and how awesome would it be for everyone to get back to the past when everyone was about families being together and not so busy... That's where we got lost, we got too busy but we do come together at at least one meal lol. We have two boys about your older boys' age and work keeps them busy. Thank you for sharing your quiet times and family. God Bless💜
Yes it would be wonderful if everyone got back to the past to families! What a revival that would be! God bless you my friend!
Family Heritage Living
Oh yes how awesome would that be if a Holy Ghost Revival broke out? I would love to see something much greater then the Azuza Street Revival. 😊🙏🔥💜 there was an old song I think called Revival fire fall Ohhhh how I miss the oldies.
Mahealani you brought up Azuza Street. Hope you don't mind me asking but I'm going to, are you Pentecostal or Apostolic by faith?
Awesome video thank you for sharing. Keep smiling God bless

Beautiful video big like 👍
I love your channel
Thank you Cindy! So glad you have joined us!
I sincerely love this video. You are calm and collected. You share this so wonderfully without arrogance or piety. I grew up with many of these values, and although our lifestyle is relaxed and pleasant along side the rat race (see videos), I am planning to incorporate some more simplistic aspects of life around here. We live in Minnesota, so our hearts are very dear to Little House on the Prairie, living not too far from Laura Ingalls Wilder's actual stompin' grounds. Also having read Walden several times and being a big fan, I think I might build a small cabin on our property as a place to relax and unwind with very little. Thanks again! Great video! ~ Josh
Thank you Josh! Blessings!
I'm totally in on this kind of living
Thank you for sharing, Yahweh bless!
Thank you! Blessings!
I remember when the boys were born they sure have grown
GOD BLESS YOU AND RON

We went a full year at first off grid with compost toilet and toting all water into the home... and out again. That was laborious but doable. Lamp light made us sleepy early. After super, I read Grimm's fairy tales etc at nite with a head lamp and then we all went to bed. We now have plumbing, yay, and piggy back a little electric from a family member next door until we get solar set up correctly here or go on grid. We haven't decided which would suit us better as yet. Air conditioning is a real factor where we live. The summer heat is unlivable most times. If not for needing A/C I think we'd do fine off grid. It's sultry down south.
Nourishing lifestyle - as it should be.
:)
Just got home from a week away, and I open my screen to see this video. What a blessing! Thank you so much, Lea; this vid is just what I needed! :-) :-) :-)
P.S. I think you mentioned kerosene as your lamp fuel (?) . Does it give off a strong odour, or is it a special kind just for lamps, and if so what is it called? Thank you :-) !!!
Thank you Debbie!
It is just regular kerosene we get in 2.5 gallon containers from WM. It does not leave a smell in most lamps. I find that the new lamps will smell regardless what is used in them. It really is just a matter of making sure your flame is not too low or too high and make sure it is not in a draft. There should be no smell to the lamp, except for the first few minutes after lighting but after the flame is adjusted there is not smell at all until and you blow it out of course.
Thank you, Lea! I had always heard kerosene gives off a strong smell, so we've always used unscented lamp oil in our emergency lamps, but it 's more pricey than kerosene. Based on your experience I will make the switch :-)
Debbie I would recommend you play with it a bit as it can take some practice with getting comfortable with the lamp and how a particular lamp may burn on the kerosene. I just want to make sure you get the desired end results prior to "having" to use them where a have to situation might not be the right time to learn the quirks of the kerosene and/or the lamp it is in.
Greatday everyone
I believe THIS life is calling to me BIG time..................I THINK I have EMF exposure sickness . ONLY NOW connected the dots. Nothing I do is healing me. I have ALWAYS LOVED OLD FASHIONED. You guys do GREAT at it. Thanks for sharing.
High Calling of God, We are praying for you! God bless you!
Nice music
Thank you!
So good to see you living this sustainable lifestyle. And you said it well when you commented that children are not taught the value of work. Our 4th generation family farm is a bit more modern than 1899. We are perhaps...rural 1935 New Hampshire. My father-in-law established a dairy farm. After his passing the farm converted over to grass fed beef breeding stock, logging, firewood and haying. In 2020 all three of us will be 70-something, me, my husband and my brother-in-law. I'm typing next to our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove and 1924 Hoosier baking cabinet. We use Aladdin lamps, which were invented in 1926 I believe, plus regular oil lamps. Our newest tractor has the most repairs! If the grid goes down, we will be fine. This working lifestyle has kept us all healthy and grateful to God for making it possible to live close to the land. God bless all you endevors!
What a beautiful video thanks for sharing Lea, the pony and goats are so cute ,Lea u don't have a cow? I think time at the table is most precious too it has always been my best family thing to do together, share a meal...god bless amen
