One of my biggest peeves with Wicked is Fiyero, he literally tells you who he is and acts entirely differently, like the original cast is cannon. I was so happy to see him actually dancing during "Dancing through life", like the song literally says one thing and at best he kind of swings off a lamppost. Makes me crazy. Anyway thank you for dancing Fiyero Jon Chu.
I don't think enough credit is being given to Shu for the impossibly difficult task he's pulled off. I hear people complain about the wash out color, breaking up Defying Gravity, the decision to back light, and saying the CGI looks like PS2 graphics. I've heard more than one person say he's the true villain of the film. I think it's all nitpicking.
I don’t think I could have been more pleased with this film and the additions they made. Nanny being added and made into a bear? Phenomenal choice! Plus all the easter eggs from the book as well as the original Wizard of Oz film. When the window broke in the dorm room, it made me so happy. 😂 Such a small thing, but I love it.
Or Tilda Swinton as the Wicked Witch and Kate Winslet as Glinda. Though, Amy Adams would be a good Glinda in a (preferably animated and only having a few Hollywood celebrity actors in voice roles they would fit in, with the rest of the characters voiced by regular voice actors and newcomers) cinematic universe of movies (based on the single books in the series) and TV mini-series (based on the trilogy books in the series) based on the canonical "Supreme Seventy-Five" and deuterocanonical Oz books that would fix their problems and inconsistencies and get rid of stereotypes in the later Oz books.
I can't tell you how much I loved this film. It is just.....words are totally inadequate. Cynthia and Ariana were just amazing, and I loved Idina's and Kristen's cameo! And the flying monkeys!
YAY FULL REVIEW!!!!!!❤ Just saw it today and sobbed several times 😂 I’ve grown up with Oz. I mean-I’m a Minnesota girlie so I loved Judy since I could walk. Wizard of Oz was one of 3 (the other two being beauty and the beast and sound of music, lol!) VHS films that were played on repeat growing up. I used to pretend I was Dorothy, or Glinda flying in her bubble…..when I was 9, I saw the tour with Eartha Kitt and the very first theatre role I ever got was Dorothy in 3rd grade. I have seen Wicked over 70 times (I worked as an usher at a theatre so I worked every single show when it toured in my town!😂) and I have seen Idina in concert twice (once with a stage door hug!) and just am dying to see the movie again even tho I literally JUST got back from it……its everything 💚 I love it so much
I don't know if anyone else feels this way but a part of me feels this whole project may be a sneaky plan by Universal to lay the groundwork for an Oz series. The rights to the 1939 film expire in 10 years. We know studios like Disney have long wanted to create a franchise around Oz & without anymore legal issues from MGM a wizard of Oz remake seems inevitable. I think Universal are getting out ahead of the pack, testing the waters with these films & using them to solidify their vision of Oz in the publics imagination. I hope I'm right because a series of Oz films would be incredible.
Actually, it's (less than) 11 years now, since it's going to expire on January 1st, 2035, while the audio recording rights will expire on January 1st of 2037 (for the 1938 audio rights) and 2038 (for the 1939 audio rights). The copyright expiration date has been 96 years after publication/release date for written and visual works and 99 years after release date for audio works in the US (and 70 years, or less or more than that, depending on the country, after the deaths of their last surviving principal creators elsewhere in the world) since the amendments to the 1998 Copyright Act on January 1st, 2018. The expiration date for copyrighted works was 36 years in the early days of the US, 56 years from 1956 to 1978, 75 years from 1978 to 1998, and 95 years from 1998 to 2018. I personally think the copyright term should be 46 years after publication/release date for audio, written, and visual works in the US and 10 years after the death of the last surviving principal creator elsewhere in the world.
Firstly, hello fellow Ozians! I was just thinking about some ways they would bring part 2 to or around the runtime of part 1 and it dawned on me that part 2 may have to contend with the 1939 film's portrayal of Dorothy coming to Oz ending up being a dream! So that will be interesting if that is at all entertained, or if perhaps we get a bit of a revisionism toward it. Can't wait to see more theories for part 2 over the next year and I'm also SO SO SO interested to see the promo/trailers/marketing for part 2!
I dunno, I feel like they'd want to ignore the whole dream thing after all it's potentially a rights issue. Seeing as it's an element from the original film, they could potentially run into issues with MGM. Then again, Its possible they've made somekind of deal behind the scenes, after all we did see a Judy Garland style Dorothy at the beginning. But still I imagine they'll want to keep 1939 elements as limited as possible. So my bet is that Oz is real in this continuity & they just won't bring up the dream implications from the MGM film. in fact I have a sneaking suspicion, Universal may be looking at a series of Oz films if this is a success. We know how hollywood loves franchises & this could be a sneaky way of introducing the public to a new vision of OZ. With the rights expiring in 10yrs a Wizard of Oz remake is inevitable & this whole thing could be a sneaky way of prepping audiences and getting out ahead of other studios (especially Disney who've long been desperate to adapt the oz series). So with that in mind I don't think they'll want to remind people of the classic film more than they feel they need too.
i saw it this morning at 10:20am with like 8 other people in my theater and when i tell you i gasped and then cried at the idina & kristin cameos when no one else knew what was going on lmaooo but one old man did say it was the best movie he’d seen this year when it was over 😂
Great Review!!!! I have been a fan of the musical since I saw it in Broadway, in September of 2003. I saw the musical with the Original Cast. My expectation for this movie based on the past Musical adaptation to the big screen I was hoping for the best but expecting another CATS and Mean Girls fiasco. Jon M Chu did what should be expected for a good musical adaptation, it not only catered to the Wicked Fandom but also was an amazing story, cast, and setting for a first-time viewer. Bravo for everyone who brought this modern masterpiece to life, thank you from this 55yr Old theater kid for renewing my faith in what made me fall in love with the theater in the first place.
I was wondering about John Powel's music for this, and I did some googling and yes, it is getting an album. Apparently, the release date for that one will be December 6. No word on what the name of the album will be or how many tracks yet.
About Jonathan Bailey's performance: A lot of the things y'all commented on are borrowed from his Bridgerton character. I mean, Anthony and Fiyero are very different at their cores, but...yeah. There's the sense of knowing how to dial the charm up to ten when they want to.
I always took the part in the intro when the dad screams "take it away" and the goat nurse then was kind and raised (nanny to her) Elphaba, making her bond to Dillamond something stronger
My only big complaint was the lights. All the back light and over exposed light made it so hard to look at all the beautiful sets and costumes. Specially in no one mourns the wicked and dancing through life. But I loved the performances and all the additions to the story that were added 💛🙌
for the practical sets they used a lot of natural light.I thought it looked fine. I had a lot bigger problems with the cgi parts because they are a direct contrast, its darker to hide blemishes and it always makes me go looking for what is cgi.
@@solcarlosofficial cgi is in a weird place right now, its so expensive people are going back to practical, and imo its not very good quality either in that its so flipping dark, like you can't see any background in most of last year's Little Mermaid.
I've only seen the movie once, Saturday evening. This was one of a very few times at this theater in a small/medium Midwest city that the audience broke out into applause at the end of a film.
any differences between your first screening and the current release? some people in the wicked spoiler chat swore up, down, and sideways, that the governor dying was a post credits stinger. which would be a weird thing to lie about
Minor complaints about the cinematography forget that the Technicolor part of the 1939 OG version didn't start until Dorothy came to OZ. Maybe there will be some sort of homage to this in part 2?😅
Ummm? Maybe because they were never like on “earth” Because the true point is the black and white was to tether Dorothy’s character to reality, to emphasize the monotony, thats why it goes back to black and white when she wakes up
technicolor was because it was a "dream" or "imagination" of Dorothy... but with Wicked, that was supposed to be a "real life" word... that's how I interpret this... and honestly, I don't understand what's the problem everybody's talking about with the cinematography of this movie? it looks beautiful to me...
Just saw the movie and it was phenomenal! I agree that I hope they have more anarchist Elphaba like in the book. I don’t want them to make her into a hero, but rather an antihero. So that way she somewhat earns the title of the wicked witch of the West. Nothing annoys me more when they turn a villain into a completely misunderstood hero like they did to maleficent. Elphaba becomes a radical and not everything she does is good or helpful to her cause. But I’m pretty confident this is the direction they’re gonna go especially considering how the aftermath of the melting looks in the beginning sequence of the movie.
Do you really think you're going to fill a theater with people looking at a movie about an extremist? Especially, an audience that came to the first movie specifically to be inspired?
I respect everybody’s opinion. And I love that so many people do love this and I wouldn’t take that away from them. However, for me, I felt like it was OK. If I were to grade this film and the stage show I would give it a B- With that being said, I do think it deserves all the love it is getting. I just feel like it’s not for me. I think return to Oz will always be my favorite oz film. And I love that you guys love that film as well. Gregory MaGuire’s book (wicked, the life and times of the wicked of the west)Is my favorite book so maybe I’m biased. Every actor was amazing. And the soundtrack is incredible.
So I’m new here…& I certainly appreciate the enthusiasm for “Wicked”! But what exactly is happening with Ryan’s eyebrows & beard? Is that…on purpose? Unfortunately it’s so distracting I couldn’t really pay attention to the content. 🤷♂️
Let’s not over in state the importance of a practical set. Yes, they had practical sets was just always nice but they’re in a fantasy land so of course things are going to be CG especially when you’re trying to do them in scope . and the great and powerful had because we saw all of us we didn’t see the emerald city or munchkin land or these places we saw a larger space and nobody complains about CG when it’s a marvel that is filmed almost entirely in a blue room on a movie lot. Also, the Wizard of Oz does not need to be rewritten. It doesn’t need to be redone. It’s a classic and it’s wonderful as it is and wicked should be seen as it always was as it’s own iteration and take on a pre-existing world that existed for almost 100 years prior . Wicked entity and should be seen and respected as such as well as the Wizard of Oz the film in the books . The difference with the 1930s film is that we only saw Dorothy story but the original book if you want to get technical was a series and they had different things in adventures in the world outside of Dorothy., Dorothy was one situation in the film. They just get wasted because you don’t get to see the beauty of them not to mention, the emerald city wasn’t even more like Plaza square than a city in powerful emerald city felt like a city and wicked the palace when they do meet the wizard did feel grand when they were in it, but the city did not.
Dr dillamond was the best dr dillamond I have ever seen. They nailed his character and made me care for him so much.
Agreed, I really like how they handled him in the film, and Peter Dinklage's voice performance was perfect.
i also was obsessed with the change in the fiyero & elphaba meeting & the stronger connection between the two ugh it’s just so good
You’re the ONLY ones qualified to review this. True fans!!!
lol, I love how the community acts like Walter doesn't exist. Rude.
Ryan saying he likes Wicked more than the MGM film. And Tori's reaction. LOL!!!!
I don't think enough credit is being given to Shu for the impossibly difficult task he's pulled off. I really enjoy Nanny's character in the book. It was nice to have a little nod to her in the film!
I’ve been WAITING for this review 😭😭😭 32 minutes isn’t long enough
Imagine a remake of the Wizard of Oz with Cynthia and Ariana playing the wicked witch and Glinda
I mean that essentially would be part 2 of the movie

Please no
Wicked gave me live action disney movie vibes if they were still high quality.
Just got my tickets to see it for a 4th time. I have no notes. Loooooved it. It was phenomenal and exceeded all my expectations.
I can't tell you how much I loved this film. It is just.....words are totally inadequate. Cynthia and Ariana were just amazing, and I loved Idina's and Kristen's cameo! And the flying monkeys!
Andy Blankenbueller, choreographer of Hamilton, has done amazing work. One of his projects was choreographing "The Wiz" for City Center Encores.
I loved Blankenbuehler's work with Bandstand! Just incredible storytelling through movement.
So happy to finally see this.
y’all are right!!!! i watched wicked and immediatly fall in love with OZ! I bought the book and watch the wizard of oz too🥰
I love what Chu did with Wicked but I hope the Wizard of Oz goes untouched. It's such a classic. I'm all for expanding on what we already know though.
yesss we need pt 2 predictions!

in universe maybe idina's battle cry imspires elphaba to do her war cry at the end of defying gravity

Me too lol. I was in a theater of maybe 15 people. I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw IM and KC. Such a beautiful touch
This was one of the few films ive seen in a while thst to me was perfect.

Hi guys, I saw the movie today and it was mind blowing! Everybody did a great job, I laughed, cried and got chills throughout.
As someone who’s never seen the musical I’m now changed for good
I always took the part in the intro when the dad screams "take it away" and the goat nurse then was kind and raised (nanny to her) Elphaba, making her bond to Dillamond something stronger
Also the Easter eggs to non replica productions! So many surprises just jump off the screen if ya know
Possible spoiler alert: doesn't Gregory Maguire appear as the train conductor for his cameo?

I don’t want a new 1939 film. I want a new faithful adaptation of the novel that can allow further adaptations of the sequels.
Idk if there any Dr. Who fans here, but Fiyero was giving me BIG Captain Jack vibes during Dancing Through Life. They might be cousins or something 🤣
who else ugly cried during defying gravity
