Oh my GOD when we get a glimpse of elphaba with tears streaming down her face and when Glinda’s friends told her to stop the way she said “no” and hugged her
@maciedixon3983 I was so worried but yes he captured the essence of what we all know so clearly. Only drawback was that since you know it's Jeff goldblum, the medium of a film couldn't really disguise his identity in the opening
@@issitalopezwhile I agree with you, his voice was very recognizable at the beginning, I don’t think it’s that big an issue. It actually adds tension that he has no idea he’s interacting with his own daughter and now sending his guards to capture her. It’s a set up for the tragedy we know is coming.
I cried the entire time! Also them casting Elphaba as an African American woman (being mistreated because of the color of her skin) was brilliant! I definitely understood what you meant with how she betrayed that internal struggle! I also thought Ari played Glenda so beautiful! You can tell that everyone in this film put their heart into it! I love it!! 🌻🩷💚
I think Cynthia’s take on Elphaba is so much more real. It shows lived experience with othering in a way that frankly not a single Elphaba ever has… we know why.
You're mostly correct, but you're missing the allegory of Oz's treatment of the animals to the progressive Eugenics Movement started in the late 19th century. 90% of progressive ideas are incompatible with humanity when taken to their natural conclusion, and require an authoritarian regime to implement the ghastly policies. Spearheaded by Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, Eugenics in the US resulted in the forced sterilization of "unfit" persons and racial minorities through the 1920s. Inspired by Sanger's writings in the US, Eugenics was then taken to its horrifying extreme by the totalitarian German Socialist regime in the 1930s, which resulted in human-animal breeding experiments and the Holocaust. Progressivism as a vehicle for unchecked Evil is the underlying theme of Maguire's 1995 novel.
@ exactly. Her weary, rote responses instead did being fiery in then was SO chilling. Of course she wouldn’t be on 19 at all times, bc she’s lived this her whole life. Just… gutted me
So many tear inducing scenes! 1. No one mourns the wicked because they are alone! 2. The name calling scene when she's a girl. 3. Galinda mimicking Alphie's dance moves in OzDust. 4. I'm not that girl. TBC
@@briannapinkney4966 Wow. There are so many interviews, I am now only beginning to watch them I like the one where Ariana heaped praises on Johnny for doing the dance in the library (flipping the books and gliding on them)
The moment I saw young elphaba I immediately started crying. I was completely surprised by the moment and it immediately pierced my heart. And I agree! Elphaba’s power up until that point was inconsistent and displayed itself when she was defending others but never for herself. In that moment she was standing up for herself. And that is one of realest and hardest things to do.
I can't wait to see how Chu stages No Good Deed, because the spectacle is going to blow the doors off. Also can you imagine how hard Ariana is going to make us cry during Thank Goodness?
It’ll be interesting because she actually does know how to read the Grimerie, so the line where she doesn’t understand what she’s reading may not have as much weight
I’m glad I found a person who is passionate about the play and knows it like a person knows breathing. I love all your takes. I too was so overwhelmed the first time I saw it bc I was dealing with the spectacle of it all with my expectations as well. My interpretation of her falling and seeing herself as a child is because she is falling to her death and she is imagining her being helpless like when she was a child and having no power but she chooses to save herself and that’s why the broom appears when she reaches out. She can’t save that child but she can now save herself.
There is also something eerie and sad and devastating about elphaba wishing that there could be a celebration throughout oz all to do with her and it showing NOMTW
obviously i cried at the very end but 2 moments i cried at the most was when she was falling from the tower during DG and we saw the reflection of baby elphie falling i just cried, also in WAI when she sees the vision she gets so emotional thinking that people are finally going to see and accept her when in reality they are all celebrating that shes dead it broke my heart that poor elphie doesnt know that
i just saw the movie with my friend and we were so excited and playing so much she gave me a cut with her Galinda wand lol😭😭😭 she also blew my cape around during defying gravity and when it was over we ran across the stairs😭😭😭
I would also like to add. The hug between Morrible and Glinda reminded me of Voldemort and Malfoy. It was awkward, forced, and you can see the wheels turning. Glinda was vulnerable and Morrible played it off like a Narcissistic mother saving her child.
I worked on set while these two beautiful films were being recorded. Jon Chu says it best, Ariana was the perfect choice not only for her vocal abilities and acting skills BUT for her DEEP knowledge of the Broadway, Touring, and West End editions and their fan bases. He would attempt to make small line changes and she would simply say “Jon, That’s Bible.” He knew immediately that he couldn’t make that change, because SHE knew it would upset someone somewhere. Cynthia was the perfect choice because there is nobody on this planet, nobody, who can do what she did and sing at the same time. The stunts she performed as she was singing and being recorded were WILD. I never heard one note out of place from either of these two beautiful women. I am honored to have worked on these films and I know you will enjoy the second one. Stay wicked. 🖤🩷💚
Tyler this was such a great review !!! when i first saw WICKED on broadway 10 years ago the movie was immediately announced for 2019! then got pushed back until now. So this was my most anticipated movie for years!! it was absolutely perfect and I can not wait for part 2! Ariana was fantastic and i take back everything i said about her casting Cynthia was amazing and just perfect this movie was fantastic and i’ll be seeing it for the 2nd time today!
@jeddykehler-I know what you mean. You know that Glinda has to keep the munchkins from seeing how she's really feeling & trying to appear happy, but you can see that inside she's actually devastated. I love the stage show of Wicked, but there's something about the movie that just hit me even harder emotionally. As amazing as the stage show is, the movie adaptation has so far done an even better job at getting across just how tragic this story is. I just know I'm going to be an emotional wreck at the end when part 2 comes out next year.
I’ll have to go back and really try to find all the “Wizard of Oz” homages because there were SO. MANY….I was overwhelmed lol. 1.) At one point, Boq tells Glinda “I cry a lot”, his last name being Woodsman…foreshadowing the Tin Man. 2.) Elphaba tells Fiyero to “Get stuffed…”, an obvious nod to foreshadowing the Scarecrow. 3.) We hear “Ding Dong The Witch is Dead” when the children are ringing the bells down the yellow brick road to announce Elphaba’s death. 4.) We hear “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” at some points… 5.) At the end of “The Wizard and I”, Elphaba’s I Want song, runs to the end of cliff and we see a rainbow and blue birds flying -a direct nod to the lyrics in Dorothy’s I Want song! 6.) During “Popular”, Glinda picks up red ruby shoes and clicks them 3 times! …and I’m sure so many more I missed!!!
@@mp3holder94 That was already in the original stage version. Also the choreography of Dancing Through Life in the stage version is completely different and includes moves that completely mimics (almost too obviously so) Scarecrow moves.
It was amazing. The only thing I wished was that they had added more scenes with Morrible with Elphaba and Glinda doing sorcery classes with her. They still skipped it over for the main part, minus that one short scene with just Elphaba and Morrible.
I thought it was very interesting with Miss Coddle being the Headshiztress, while Madame Morrible being a faculty member or Dean of Sorcery. It was almost giving me Harry Potter vibes. When Miss Coddle tells Elphaba “It is out of our hands” reminded me of Professor Weasley in Hogwarts Legacy.
I agree! Keala should have had some opportunity to sing. The one missed opportunity. But this move was everything. Love listing to you geeking out as much as I did.
I was reluctant to see it. Usually choosing big names and remaking already amazing Broadway musicals fall flat. I sat in my chair after the movie for luke 10 minutes and was completely speechless. This is the greatest movie ever recorded.
My belief for the purpose of miss coddle is that they wanted to give Nessa a sense of independence. Portraying a differently abled person as strong and independent became a layer of depth for her character and they needed a way for her to assert that. The beauty of it is that Elphaba also understood this need for her sister’s independence and spoke with her in solidarity on the matter. The heartbreak of this is that despite Elphaba’s lifelong devotion and love to her sister, Nessa never speaks up for Elphaba or recognizes the pain she is always carrying. I find Nessa is awful in this way. It infuriates me how much Elphaba has cared for Nessa only to be vilified by her so easily.
The only time I got to see Wicked the musical was back in 2007. It was a part of my grandmother's bucket list, she had terminal cancer. So I was an emotional wreck throughout most of the movie thinking about how much she would have loved the movie if she were still alive to see it with us. Thankfully our theater was almost empty because we went to the first showing in the morning so I got to cry further away from the few people in there with us.
