Thanks for the videos Dave. I work in a grocery store here in Australia selling Yerba Mate and for the first time in 3 years i have worked there a customer asked "Do you sell straws to drink it with?". we dont, but it did get me curious to do some research on Mate and i find it quite interesting. and as an added bonus i think im the only one in the whole shop that actually now knows what Mate is and how to drink it thanks to your videos.
Very interesting. It is good to cure the gourd, but for a different reason. This way you can test the quality of the mate. If it withstands the stress during the curing process then it will last. However if the gourd breaks then you'll be inclined to go back to the seller and get your money back from selling you a poor quality gourd. Will keep this in mind in the future. Thanks Dave.
Thanks for the comeback video Dave, you were missed. Some people in mate drinking countries use the bombilla as a cleaning device but this deteriorates it. Of course for them this is no problem, they´re sold just about everywhere. It´s best to designate a small rounded spoon, like I have, for this purpose. And even then the scraping should be done gently for the gourd´s sake. For the record I´ve been ´gourd´ drinking mate daily for more than 30 years.
I been drinking my hibiscus tea out of my mate gourd, and it has that plant material on the in side of the gourd walls, and it does taste bitter. I wash the in side with a baby bottle brush. 😄 thank you for all the information it helped me a lot. I don't use boiling water for my tea, I boil the water, then I let it cool off some what , I make my tea when The water is not to hot, yet hot enough to drink comfortably 😍😘
To this day i never saw a gourd breaking... but have two tipes of gourd's, here they call the thin gourd and thick gourd... If you buy a thick one it last for a lifetime... The cure is made as a preparation for the first mate, the idea is to "engrave" the flavor of the leafs in the gourd...
I don't think this is the best idea. Would be better to get all the fat out of the gourd rather than add it back with butter. Otherwise it will get softer over time
@@nothing-but-milk sorry for my late reply, it doesn't leave a taste. You do feel the first 1 or 2 mates a little greasy but after that you don't feel anything weird.

@@imalamboman12 I must have watched this video really late at night because I don't even know why I started talking about wooden gourds. But yeah makes sense, I don't think people cure calabash gourds or if they do, they "cure" it by just leaving the wet yerba inside. Calabash gourds will always break first since they're more fragile anyway. Gauchos would just make a new one when it breaks. If you get a wooden gourd in the future though, I recommend Carob over Pine, quality is better and the smell they have is just delightful.
I cured mine a little bit, left yerba in it for 24hrs, but I didnt let it dry properly afterwards, started drinking. Next day I had the worst stomach ache and sick of my life.
Dave Mate back with that good shit. I think I cured my first mate then gave up and realized it was a hoax after that. Drying it out in the sun is maximum A#1 cure technique.
It´s better to have more than one gourd as to rotate them. A sun lighted window verge, behind a curtain for example, is a good place to keep the ones not in use dry, opening upward.
Absolutely, if it's a good one. Some ceramics get too hot and aren't shaped well to hold it in a way as to avoid burning your hand (like the very round ones). I love my ceramic gourd.
Anyone ever think about coating the inside with coconut oil? Coconut oil kills mold and conditions wood. Is this taboo in the yerba mate world? Thanks in advance...

I had my calabasa gourd for about 2 weeks now. I've been curing it and it looks darker in the inside which it's supposed to happen. My question was how long do I have to continue to cure it?! I was gonna start curing my palo Santo gourd too, But I guess I don't have to anymore 😁 btw I've been drinking rosamonte, cbsé naranja(orange), and amanda. What other yerba mates do you reccomend? Thanks in advance
The gourd will naturally cure on its own with use; no need to traditionally cure it. That practice is, effectively, dead. I recommend Playadito and Mission and Liebig.
@@Bluestarseed1 Hi, well I like my palo santo especially because of the smell of it's wood. I have a stainless steel mate too and yeah it does taste a bit different than my palo. I have a question. When i drink mate, the first 30min-60min taste like water, with a touch of green leafs. But after i move the mate mountain and make a new ”mate hole” the taste is much stronger, and taste like candy. Shouldn’t the mate taste the same????? Why is it stronger on the 2nd side???
Depends on the type and brand of mate. Also, there is a point when the mate becomes brewed in the gourd and a burst of flavors are released after several cycles. This is normal.
@@Bluestarseed1 palo santo is the best mate gourd. I coat mine before first use with butter. That way it doesn't Crack. The gourds I used before without using butter, all cracked
We don't cure gourds to make them stronger... A fresh gourd makes horrible mate. And please, NEVER scrape the gourd with the bombilla. Use a spoon instead.

You don't cure the gourd to avoid breakage. You cure it so that the bitter taste of the gourd does not affect the taste of yerba mate.
That happens on its own with use, naturally.
