It’s SO true when she says “for TOPIK, you don’t study the language, you study for the exam.” Literally like half the vocab words that would be required to get a level 6 are words that native speakers never actually use. So unless you need a topik score for your job or visa, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to bother taking it.

As someone who has both taken several English exams and also prepared other Italian students for English exams, I can confirm you don't study the language, it's almost like learning a strategy than actually studying 😆 so I guess it applies to many languages :") very interesting video!
My speaking only got better until I forced myself to take conversational classes with a Korean teacher. My social anxiety had me feeling horrible when I started but I had to overcome the fear if I wanted to get better. Korean Universities have online programs. I joined the KU one inspired by your study journey :) but I also want to do italki !
Your videos on studying Korean are so much more down to earth than others on UA-cam. I recently started doing the sentence mining thing where I go looking for sentences or grammar examples, (or anything shiny) and stuff them into my SRS flash card app. I had burned out but doing this seems fun. I just need to be careful not to put anything too above my level into the app. I really relate to what you said about getting lost in groups of natives speaking. I studied Japanese and got good at one on one conversations and if you don’t get the opportunity to hang out with large groups of native speakers much it’s easy to think your level is higher than it really is.

For me, the biggest difficulty about big-group conversations is not so much processing what's going on (although it obviously requires more brain work to keep track of a bunch of people talking and reacting compared to 1-2), but my contributions to the group conversations basically become nothing. I can't process what people are saying and also process my own thoughts enough to actually jump in and speak before others have already jumped in, said their piece, and moved the conversation onwards. Thankfully, I'm perfectly happy to just be a part of the group and observe the antics of my friends, but it does take quite a bit of processing speed to take part in a conversation with a large group of native speakers and match their speed of reacting and responding to each other. Despite being advanced, my processing is still no match for native speakers 😆

I am so so so happy I found your channel. I really needed to hear it was okay to not be studying every day like I feel l should be. And than extended breaks isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Because I was feeling really guilty. 🥺
Always so inspiring. I started learning korean back in August 2021 and your videos were the ones that make me put up with the courage to do it. Year and a half later I still have a long journey to go I passed topik 1 2급 in october and right now I'm starting 3B books and I feel I don't really know anything but then I put things on perspective and I know I've been working hard and I guess if I keep working hard I'll be able to make more progress. Obviously, Korean is harder than when I learnt English or French and sometimes I feel defeated so whenever that happens I just watch one of your videos because every time I do so I can find motivation again. Thank you so much for keep sharing your journey with us 💖💖

16:11 (is group conversation easier?) I also dont remember!!! i tried to find the video for the exact situation but i watched several and couldnt remember so i decided to just ask anyway haha
i wanna say it was for thanksgiving? idk. but you had a bunch of friends over (or maybe they invited you) and they asked if you wanted to do english but you were like "nah im good" and really the main thing i remember is you bein like "if youre watching this im sorry! dont feel bad cause its not my intention!" lol and you mentioned that one of your friends told you its like that for them in English, but you didnt understand it until you experienced it yourself
with that context, idk if you or anyone else remembers haha it just stuck with me cause it was an interesting point.

Im finally watching this video after youtube refused to notify me it was uploaded, lol! Whenever Im practicing/studying korean I have so many made up conversations with myself or my favorite kpop idols 😂But it really does help with getting used to using certain grammar structures and vocab words without thinking too much about it. The Q&A portion of this video was genuinely really helpful, and I think I like the format of having a mini Q&A sections within a video rather than a full video for a Q&A!

Thank you so much for talking about not pushing yourself. I have chronic illnesses and sometimes I feel guilty when I can't study or be productive. I needed to hear that more than I realised ❤️
I got my current laptop back in February 2012 lol She is doing just fine. I credit the cooler I always have her on. It's noisy, but it keeps the temp down... I find it odd when I'm practicing writing sentences, and have people online help correct them, more often than not people say if I keep speaking formally I'll be judged as being odd, I should be more casual. I think it's better to err on the side of being polite, so idk, maybe a lot of young people are answering my Qs lol ...I would say looking at Korean for even a few seconds a day, you could learn through familiarity the words. I really like the Lexilize flashcard app . You can do matching games with the words you input, timed challenges, typing options. When I have time I might spend a few hours on it, but, I at least look at one word a day, even if I guess the word incorrectly, I see it written in hangeul and I'm showing my brain every.single.day. that Korean is normal and a part of my life. I'm trying to keep it from being a chore, but instead an integrated piece of me....
Thanks for sharing these blogs, and I hope to see more of these. It is interesting in the q and a section about how it gets more difficult when more Korean people are present. Was this for both listening and speaking? This makes me wonder do you know the words as they are or do you need to translate them?

I really like that you said you don’t have to super push it if you are legit busy. I’ve found it harder and harder to fit language learning into my day like I used to (Work full-time, am a parent, and try to exercise every day,) and I always feel guilty about it. But thank you for the reminder that it’s okay, and we can just do it when can. ♥️
Im again so glad to find your channel,,, you've no idea! I struggle with knowing how to start learning. I'm planning on moving there in a few months. I of course hope to pick up language more and learn/ study more when I'm actually there but before that I do hope to learn some Korean before I go. I just have a hard time with knowing what resources to use
I totally get what you mean…one time I went to a Japanese Conversation Meetup on Zoom where they paired you one on one with a Japanese person and you were suppose to talk 10 minutes with them in English and then switch and do 10 minutes in Japanese. Well they didn’t have enough English natives show up so they stuck these two Japanese women in the breakout room with me. And let’s just say that wasn’t so fun 😅 Also don’t do an exchange with a young Japanese mother - screaming baby in the background isn’t the easiest for focusing on what you are trying to say.

im gonna assume as with any language you have to learn the alphabet first, how to write it and speak it and then move on to other Korean sentences , is that easy to start with at first? These study videos are such a great inspiration for me to finally begin learning korean :)
Yes! The alphabet is really easy to learn and remember. There’s a UA-cam video that teaches you in 20 minutes. Most language learning apps start with the alphabet so you can practice too.

I don’t study vocabulary every day or on any type of schedule. However I do like to start my study sessions off by reviewing whatever vocabulary appears in my study resource

요즘 한국어를 열심히 공부하는 압박 줘요 왜냐면 2년 뒤에 한국으로 이사하는 계획이 있는데 한국어를 할 수 있는 친구가 없어서 은행이나 병원이나 가게 되면 도움이 없을 거 같아요. 졸업 후에 워홀로 한국에 들어갈 생각이 있으니까 한국어를 공부하면서 일하고 수업 과제도 해야 돼요.

Natalia, I have a question after watching a few of your older videos, sorry if you have answered it since then!
You mentioned that you're studying at a language school, in which you're not getting a degree etc, you're just learning and getting the language certificate. Have you previously earned a degree at any other point in your life (USA/Korea)? I'm just curious how you've lived/stayed in Korea for so long, I would love to do the same and have savings but I am not sure how sustainable returning for multiple semesters would be, money wise. 🥺 And then at the end, if I don't have an official degree nor job, I'm not sure what I'd do with my life after haha.

In case this helps someone else. For the past 2 years I’ve been studying Korean, and that involves studying a lot of grammar, however I was struggling way too much about making longer more complex sentences; recently I started studying grammar and sintax from a linguistics approach which is more systemic and it’s all starting to make more sense to me. I’ve watched this English playlist, and understanding at least English sintax well helps me make better connections with Korean

Also when I ask chatGPt (the AI site) for examples of adverb clauses, I now see the role of let’s say and adverb clause of condition in a sentence rather than just the grammar point (if) and I understand I can replace that clause for another expression.
For example this adverb clause of condition = if it rains, the roads will be slippery (비가 오면 도로가 슬리퍼할 것이다. If you now give me an expression like “it’s raining cat’s and dogs” I might say it rains cats and dogs; and I can end the main clause with a 네요 to change the tone.
I don’t know, it might be too much for someone else, but I think my grammar study was too zoom in, overly focused in learning grammar points, and now thinking in linguistics terms of noun phrases, clauses and sentences it has zoom out my view.
