Oh man! I feel bad for that guy and his cane. Glad the driver was held accountable for her inattentiveness.
I’ve had a driver hit me as soon as I got off the bus in my city and was crossing the street to go home. They were turning right, broke my cane in the process, and kept going without stopping.
The second time, this was a near-miss, I was crossing the street and was about halfway through when a left turner, turned right in front of me, missing me and my cane by roughly a foot and a half, scaring the crap out me.
I used to drive a car, so I know there’s absolutely NO excuse from these terrible drivers that would explain their poor judgment. They should have their licenses revoked and cancelled. If they can’t manage something as simple as focusing on what’s going on in front of them, then they need to become a permanent pedestrian.

I was walking through a very theme park years ago and I accidentally bumped a guy with my cane. The guy got so mmad at me that he stomped on the end of my cane and seriously bent it, then ran off. I alerted security and the park refunded my money, and even paid for two new canes! They wanted me to have a backup. To this day, even though I have a guide dog, I always carry a backup cane in my bag. I even have a backup cane stashed in our truck. Not only should we be careful using our canes, but we should always have multiple backups.

That’s great that they not only refunded your money but purchased two new canes for you. Sounds like they went above and beyond what they really needed to, that’s great! Also great tips about having back up canes

A few days after I started to go out on my own I was almost run over by a car that didn’t even slow down, let alone stop, before making a right in front of me. It scared the daylights out of me. Next, I tried to cross a major intersection and discovered that the walk signs don’t work. After making it home by the skin of my teeth I stopped going out on my own for a while. I was hit and bounced off a car as a child in 1971 and the driver kept going. Luckily, I wasn’t hurt, and luckily I was able to identify the car while riding around the neighborhood with the police officer. It’s scary out there.

Great video .. to my understanding their insurance get increased .... 1) Dont forget Pedestrians have the right of way, especially if we are already crossing 2) drivers dont own the road , driving is only a privilege once they prove they can follow the rules

I've actually had people try to bully me with their car, it's not like they weren't paying attention. When they would be turning left and they would be in the middle of the intersection waiting on me to cross, the closer I got to their car they would pump the gas and got closer to me like I wasn't walking fast enough for them! That really annoys me. You also need to watch out for right-hand turners because usually they can go on red. The Bottom line guys is you have to walk defensively anymore. Stay safe.

My son is 16 and had cane training last spring. People can be real idiots. No sooner did my son enter the crosswalk and a car behind a car trying to turn left just started laying on his horn. Scared the crap out of my son and really ticked this mom off. It’s so sad that the world is in such a rush.

Hi. I was in grade7 or 8 when our mobility teachers took my classmate and me to a busy street called High Street to test out a new traffic light for them. They wanted to see if the light was beeping long enough for a blind person to cross or not.
So, we got to the crossing where we had to walk across two lanes going to the left and over the island in the middle and again over two lanes going to the right.
When the traffic light started its beeping, my classmate went over first since his totally blind with me a few steps behind him. He got to the other side no problem but, just as I got past the island and into the middle of the two lanes going right, a white car suddenly drove right in front of my cane and just, just mist hitting us both.
My teachers didn’t do anything about the car nope, instead they turned on me and told me that I could have walked faster or waited on the island. As if I knew that the light was about to change again.
They thought that just because I had some sight left, that I’ll react as fast as a partially sighted person. They never believed me when I told them that I’m not on the same level as the partially sighted kids.
Guess it’s what happens if you do things like a sighted and not like a blind person.
People think that when you are classified as blind, you should act like you are blind and helpless as well.
Same happened with my first guide dog and me. We crossed two lanes going left and two going right at the same street but, just over another one crossing on the other side.
The traffic light beeped and we walked with the first car on our right going over the lanes. We were taught to walk with the first car going over. What a bad idea that was.
Just as we got to the middle of the 4lanes, the car crossing with me turned left and the one in front of me which was going right, turned right.
These two cars surely would have hit each other because the next thing I knew, my dog and I were standing in-between the two cars. A bumper against the back of my legs and a bumper against my guide dog’s side.
They didn’t say anything and just drove off once we were safely over the street.
A policeman told me on the other side that we just about prevented a nasty accident. I didn’t think so though because, if those cars were going just a bit faster, both my guide dog and I would have been smashed between them.

When I was going through my O&M training I had a cop stop in the crosswalk and I couldn’t see just where he was at in it so I took off walking and ended running into his car breaking the outside mirror off. He jumps out of his car and says he has a good mind to take me to jail for destroying peblic property. He also asked if I was blind, at which point I held up my cane and said what do think? He picked the mirror and drove away.

    I’m from Philadelphia, Pa
On February 27,2018 about 1:30 pm. I experienced an unforgettable incident riding Septa. I was trying to board the subway train at Broad and South street. I was trailing the side of the train using my cane, when I found the door I began feeling my way making sure it was safe to proceed. Before I stepped on the train the doors closed locking my new white cane in the doors, I tried to pull it out but the door was closed to tight for me to pull it free. The train left and I was still standing there, I didn’t know how I was going to get home, because I had no cane the train pulled it out of my hand. I stood there helpless on the platform, as I asked a young lady to help to the sales booth for assistance.
I was able to get home thanks to my wife, who left work early to come to my rescue, unfortunately I missed my support group appointment at at University of Penn. I tried to get logistic care services to my doctor appointments, they said being blind doesn’t qualify for door to door service because we can get public transportation. It goes to show not all people who are visually impaired or blind can safely travel on public transportation.

I know two VIPs in the past 18 months who have been hit by a car. One with his guide dog. Both were hit-and-runs. Thank goodness neither was serious hurt (or the dog), but one ankle was broken. It's scary, and I believe if they were fully sighted, there's a very good chance they still would have been hit.

I made it to 39 years old before I was hit crossing in front of a stopped car, at a one-way street corner. I wasn't hurt but it did hit my cane before me. He was watching the traffic from the right and I came from the left. I thought he saw me because I waited a few seconds before I started to cross. I got to the middle of his hood and took off. As to your story, I see this all the time in turn lanes and especially if the person has a dog. I guess they think the dog will stop them or pull them out of the way.

On a different subject, but still about canes. I'm a brit living in England and I'm becoming convinced that judging by the attitude of fellow pedestrians, cyclists and drivers towards me, I'm convinced that many people don't understand what the cane represents. Is that common, or are us Brits just bloody ignorant?

With my vision disorder, I typically listen, use my peripheral‘s. Across the street safely. However, my parents were both struck by a Dodge pick up truck. I am also a volunteer fire fighter, therefore, a gnu this was bad. That day, I lost my mom, and nearly lost my dad. It’s a shame that people simply do not pay attention when driving! Not sure what he was doing, but it was obvious they did not get through the intersection safely because he was not paying attention

I frequently travel places with my daughter and grandchildren. She is usually loaded down with baby, purse and diaper bag. I use a cross shoulder purse for one free hand and my cane in the other. So I happily get hand holding duty for my toddler granddaughter. In parking lots I've had too many instances were I've nearly been hit by people backing up. I've learned to put myself between child and car and give them wider clearance, when I determine it may be safe to pass but there is always that one person. It's scary.

I've been using my cane for just over a year. While I do have some visjon I can't usually see the signals. So at some intersections I will stand there and wait until the surge. The traffic may be indicating that my signal is good, but for how long? Waiting theirigh the cycle until the next surge is sometimes the only safe thing to do.

Could you upload a video of how to get the loop at the end of a hook style cane back down the shaft if the elastic slips and zooms up the bottom section? The cord lock has stopped the elastic in my cane going through all the sections to the other end, but, it also stops the loop from being retrievable by threading the elastic through the bottom shaft when the cane has been unfolded and the elastic has been stretched out in the hope that loosens it up.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  2 роки тому

I have done a video on how to retrieve the elastic band when it’s retracted down into the cane. However, that cane didn’t have the plastic clips on it. You may need to use a coat hanger to thread the elastic cord back through the sections of Cain.

This why some visual impaired use a guide dig. Not to say that she would not have hit the dog but the dog is trained in a way that a cane can not provide. But a dog is not for everyone. So you have to be careful and listen to traffic patterns and be careful when using a cane. And yes I am visually impaired also.

Yes, it was pretty worn down! Although, every time I go to a convention or conference I think the same thing, many people out there could stand to freshen up on there oh and M training!

I take my personal safety very serious. I find that motorists take certain liberties when it comes to pedestrians, moreso with visually impaired ones. I won't be half way across the intersection and a car is turning behind me and coming close to me. My personal feeling is that if they are within striking distance of my cane I have every right to protect my person and warn them with a gentle tap from the cane. Now it is probably against the law to protect oneself in situations like that, but what else can we do?

I had a student who was a terrific traveler. He had a cane that was taller than he was to show you how fast he was. He came to my house once with a bent cane that a car had hit. I believe the car kept going. If I'd seen the incident, I would have been in my car chasing that guy down to give him a piece of my mind and to make him cough up the price of the cane! Don't people know it's a federal law that you must stop when you see the white cane?

A woman I know received her cane training in NYC. When she crosses a street she waves her cane in the air. Is there a reason not to do that assuming you have enough vision not to trip in the street. Sounded pretty smart tome.

I've had many incidents has of close calls and the worst part of crossing a street is when a car stops in the middle of the crosswalk and I just beat that car with my cane and there's nothing else I can do there's no way to avoid it that's the biggest trouble it is liberating using the key and I wouldn't be able to walk a block without it the way my vision is Sam this is a personal thing is is there anyway I can contact you directly I have some things to ask you and you seem like you're out of like Illinois and caseworker I know her grandfather lost his vision due to a bad experience with Lasik eye surgery and he is highly involved with it blind low vision his name his granddaughter's name is Gretchen ty George so I don't know if his last name is that but anyway Sam let me know if there's a way I can contact you personally thank you I love your videos

How “awesome it is using the cane”, how “liberating” it is... I happened to be eating while listening to this. Started laughing and nearly choked on my food. Nothing is awesome or liberating about relying on a stick. Give me my guide dog any day of the week please! Lol

You can find my email address in the description of all of my videos. Are used to have a white cane that I put black contact paper on to make it black. I removed the black paper a few years ago so don’t have a black cane anymore. I decided it wasn’t very safe One of the purposes of the white cane is to be reflective at night and having black paper on it made at non-reflective.

Don’t try to put ANY blame on the victim in this situation. You implied that she was too slow crossing. I’m nearly every jurisdiction in the USA the person in the crosswalk, while in the crosswalk timely and legally, has the right to cross regardless of the mobility speed. I too was in a nearly identical situation, my cane actually broke, except mine was a hit and run. Everybody is in a big damn hurry. I was 12ft from the curb. The way you describe it, the whole situation could have been avoided if she moved faster.

I think perhaps you misunderstood me. Firstly, the blind individual crossing the street was a guy, not a girl. The driver of the car was a girl.

An elderly friend of mine who was hearing impaired was taking her morning stroll and was waylaid by a blind person using a cane going very fast down the sidewalk just as she turned the corner to go the direction he was coming from. She tripped over this guys cane and almost fell rigt on her face. She isn't the steadiest of people on her feet either so it was practically a miracle she didn't end up breaking a leg. Luckily she just barely kept herself from falling. What really upset me is this guy KNEW someone had tripped over his cane and just kept barreling on and never asked her if she was ok.
This is not the first time ive witnessed this kind of behavior. I find extremely irresponsible to not take into consideration the effect u might have on another person's life when people using such a cane do not take precautions to ensure others can get by them. Also I am aware a person who is blind and has been trained to use such a cane can tell a good deal by the way the sound of their cane makes when tapping in the sidewalk makes, such as whether they are coming close to an open area like when the end of a block or a corner where another sidewalk is intersecting. He could have easily taken the care to slow down at the corner and listen to see if anyone was coming in his direction before crossing the street.
Also ive seen Blind people wave their cane back and forth across the entire width of the sidewalk when there more than wide enough to accommodate a number of people walking either the same direction adjacent to them or coming from the other direction without being at all close. However for some reason some individuals using their cane feel entitiled to monopolize the entire sidewalk, blocking the entire width of the sidewalk this way.
Its understandable that if ur blind a cane like this is immensity useful and /or necessary. However, showing others the same kind of consideration u would like for yourself is something to definitely keep in mind, Mu friend could have ended up with a broken hip and would have been unable to walk, perhaps permanenttly if she hadnt by some miracle been able to keep herself from falling. Truly i believe all people are deserving of equal treatment. but this kind of behavior is inexcusable.
