The thing about India that other countries and even Indians themselves get wrong is thinking there's uniformity in the culture. Meaning, it's the same experience in Mumbai as in a U.P village.
It's like two different worlds. In metro cities specially Mumbai, the culture is a looot more open and accepting.

Just like Vio said, Indonesia is very big and has so many people. Every region has different culture, different habbit. Actually, in my region, when we walk passed each other or even stranger and we make eye contact, we usually smile and nod. And say excuse me when we walk passed elderly. And sometimes you can be friend with totally random people in a street food stand. You just talk to them like you talk to your friends

I was raised to believe that looking people in the eyes is a sign of respect and a smile or nod is acknowledging them .
i wouldn't say i was raised that way, but, that is what i believe. A smile or a nod is away to say "hello" and acknowledging the other person. we all need that in some form.

Violin is a good representation of the curiosity of most Indonesian. I think most of Indonesian would do the same, ignore privacy for the sake of curiosity.

Most Indonesian especially Javanese indeed do not outspoken. Vio, as Hokkien Indonesian probably has the same character. However, some ethnics in Indonesian do out spoken more freely such as Batak people. in fact, I wonder whether their ability to voice their mind made a lot of them became lawyer. In Indonesian Constitution, the freedom of speech was not proposed by Javanese but by a person from Minang ethnic who studied in Europe. That's why Vio was correct when stated that she couldn't really represent Indonesia, neither any Javanese could represent Indonesia because Indonesia was so diverse.
Bali, for example is more open to exposed clothes not because it is "touristy" but because their culture don't judge people from their clothes. In fact, when I lived in Bali, I saw exposed breast from local Balinese several times. Despite of that openness, Balinese still have standard for their sacred place. Thus, do not take nude pictures in temples or any sacred places.
We'll theres common behavior for a mother to exposed breast in the middle of conversation like when the moms was gossiping in the Bale ( pavilion ) to breast feeding their baby and was common in my hometown in West Java but since 2012 is more and more rare to see. They are Muslim but that culture was acceptable until well the new wave of Islamic view came.

The "open-mindedness" of the US does automatically mean "liberalness". There are plenty of conservatives in US too. The "openness" means that you are free to be as liberal _or_ as conservative as you want. The only rule is that you play nice with your neighbors, whether they are like you or not. You are an "Anerican" first and foremost, before you are a particular race, religion, or political view. We are all Americans, whether we love or hate each other. One big, messy family, lol.

India is huge and diverse. My experience is completely different from the Indian girl in this video. I especially got shocked when she said even married couples dont hold hands in India. I see them, married or unmarried couple, holding hands, hugging and kissing everywhere in India. Dint know which part of India was she talking about. But comoletely possible.

Not every American who visits your countries are rich. Some of us just saved enough money to be able to go to your country and tipping is the norm here in our homeland. This stereotype of americans being rich needs to really change in some people.
It's also because the different of value of the currency. Like 1 dollar in US is nothing, but in southeast asia it can be a whole meal. So when American give a tips like 10 dollar it's like nothing, we think in our currency it is a lot.

Looks like they mix open-minded with directness and honesty at 8:10. Most when they act nice to you, doesn't mean it's real. Compare it with the Dutch culture. Open-minded too, but with more direct and honest. I personally like that, especially if you want feedback.
I think what they said is correct. Being direct and open minded is very related. The reason why most Asians aren't really direct is because their society isn't so open-minded so you have to hold back to voice your opinion and most of the time you just keep it to yourself, especially on something that's sensitive like religion, culture, and sexuality. Also sometimes being too direct might be considered as being rude, which is another reason that Asia isn't so open-minded.
Again, because Indonesia is way too diverse, for some points I don't agree with Violin, she's being North Sumateran of Chinese descent. And I am Jogjakartan of Javanese descent.
For example, in Javanese culture walking pass stranger, we are expected to make eye contact, give simple smile, nod our head, or/and say "excuse me". Or else, we will be considered rude and mannerless, esp when walking pass elderly.

Yeah I see a lot of people do that in Jogja and Solo and I really love their politeness. I'm from Jakarta and we don't usually make eye contact and/or smile when passing each other but I think a little nod or a bow is expected everywhere in Indonesia.
that's why she said that she's not representing everybody in Indonesia as we have almost 300 million civiliants, she only stating what she saw as she grow up in North Sumatra.
We Indians are more like Americans, but we are a linear combination of all countries. I found an American at the Zurich airport she was really friendly. I was going to prague. I found out Europeans keep to themselves comparatively. Again, I am talking generally. I have met some cool Czechs also, they were also very friendly.
We do have freedom of expression constitutionally but when it comes to public display of sexual acts, social norms take the lead. I still remember the old lady in Delhi Metro bashing a girl for kissing in Public. I feel the lady was right
European countries even individually are diverse in social behaviour. In the UK for example, in rural areas it is basically mandatory to greet others you pass when walking. But in big cities strangers never speak and they even avoid eye contact.

I think she is talking about south only , I am Bengali and Bengalis are open minded since Bengal was born. And I guess whole country know about this , from sati dah pratha to vidva vivah pratha to bal vivah pratha to caste culture we questioned every time every step without hesitation, and also challenged the normal society concepts like women empowerment to women education and personal hygiene
Being open minded and being vulgar was always different thing , As we can say namaskar to a person whom we respect or don't know but can't always namaskar if he or she is my friend so it's depends.

Vio maybe not come from region where Sunda & Java (especially the central part and Jogja) are the major community , because when we meet stranger we intend to look at them in the eye and smile like the american girl, also nod our head to them especially when they are older.
Even back then when we walk and meet a person or bunch of people we will say "kulonuwon" (Javannese) and they will answer "Nggih monggo".
And if we walk very close to where they are sit or squad (nongrong) it's more complicated, because we must lower our body and give a hand gesture, put 1 hand in front, while say "Kulonuwun".
So much varies from one place in America to another. In Southern California where only a third of the population is of white European descent and so many groups bring their culture with them is totally different than areas without diversity. But even some of the most close-minded Americans are probably more openminded than those in Asian countries.

The reason we Americans smile at strangers originated with the origins of our country. This is a nation of immigrants, where many languages are spoken. Smiling is a quick, non-verbal way to signal that your intentions are not hostile.
As a multi-racial country, when USA strangers meet, the first thing we want to do is let the others know that I intend respect and friendliness. In single culture countries, everyone knows and lives by the same unspoken rules.

an airline lost my luggage on a trip to Tokyo so I had to try to find clothing, which as a big guy, was next to impossible. I bought the only 3xl dress shirt I could find and when I put it on, I looked like a fat Hulk bursting out of a shirt. LOL. Fortunately a friend on a base got some things from the NEX for me.

Each ethnicities in indonesia have their own personality and character. Take north sumatra province for example. This is where i live
Here, the biggest ethnicities are the Batak people that consists of 5 sub ethnic (cmiiw)
Each batak sub ethnic have their own language and characteristic. Such as tobanese that have strong personality, speak as if they are angry and talk very very loud. Then there is simalungunese that the oposite of tobanese, they have shy personality, calm, and their intonation sounds friendly. Then there is also karonese which have characteristic described as the mix between tobanese and simalungunese
So, calling one indonesian as the representation of the whole indonesian is not true

Well all their opinions are spot on mostly. But one thing I want them to know is that there’s a large portion of us who aren’t open minded. Like I’m part of a larger culture of Christian’s that don’t tolerate a lot of things. What they see is only surface level they don’t know the abuse that the government and most other Americans put Christians thru on a daily basis. See you’ll never hear a good majority of us say what we’re really thinking because we’re afraid that the government will infringe upon us and put us in jail over nothing. See one thing I will open your eyes to is that America has been invaded by not only illegal criminals but also we’re being invaded by lgbt terrorists who are after children.
