Watching this clip for the 50th time...seems like it...I'm thinking now while Michaela's routine was "original" and she won 1st place in her division...I guess she had enough required dance elements that allowed her to add her own arm movments to make her routine hers. Seemed like the other 2 dancers were keeping more to tradition and didn't know they could add moves of their own?? I guess this is "freestyle Tahitian Hula"...

They all freestyle. US competition style of dancing, traditionally they didnt compete. Competition is a foreign and western consept. Same is freestyle, as in Tahiti everything are choreograped around a theme, and the drumming of course. Hula has nothing to do with Ori Tahiti. Two compeltly different islands, cultures, and dance forms, tho similar. Also no such thing as traditional, as Ori Tahiti was banned by King Pomare with the help of Dutch missionaries to gain poltiical power. THen aler revived back in the 60's. The dance has evolved and gone through manus tages before it looks like it does today. And this was 6 years ago. The dance evolves daily, and each place has their own style, as every Ori Tahiti community outside of Tahiti are within different cultures, the US, Mexico, Japan, Korea, France and the UK, and it also depends on the style of the teacher, or leader. I started to dance early 2007, and now 11 years later, they don't dance like how I used to dance. Modern groups has adopted steps from jazz, ballet, and belly dance. Also the drumming has changed over the years. It's a living breathing culture that evolves, how it's kept alive, instead of ending up dead in a museum. Also thanks to it's huge popularity outside of Tahiti. The Ori Tahiti community in Hawai'i Nei is quite small, and their style is very distinctive, somwhat old school...

Fix Michaela's arms? "pareo too long". Explain to us who wouldn't know what a "pareo" is...or better yet get up there in 2019 or 2020...show us how it's done!! She did win her division.
