Regarding that Lenovo motherboard, the power on are on the top set of pins, the 6pin connector above the text 'PWR_SW" label FP1. The set of pins below are led connectors.

Yeah, and it's really easy to set it up. There are many examples of optiplex MBO's in the wild. Same with this Legion one.

It looks like standard FP connector layout. Stands to reason why he thought there's something wrong. Why would the OEM shift the pin out around like that if it's the exact same layout lol.

so which of the 6 pins have to be joined together to trigger power on then

Should hook up a power inverter in your car with an itx mobile desktop rig, allowing you to test parts on the road!
Another good GPU test method is a laptop that supports eGPU's, can hook up to the laptop and test.

Love seeing the Ford Focus in van mode!
Pro tip, you can actually lift the back seat bases up and rotate them forward, which will let you fold the back seats totally flat. Used to have an LZ Focus ST and this was a game changer once I worked it out.

You should check what group of pins did you use to boot up the Legion Towers mobo.... It should be the smaller pin array closest to the top right mounting screws. The headers right below it (the one above the fan connector) is for LED lighting, not power button.

7:15 Isn't that a Corsair Air 540? Pretty good case, using one myself as I got one of 30€, if you don't mind the Acrylic panel and how big it is, in exchange youll get a great airflow case. Too bad it doesn't have dust filters on top and bottom (you can always ad them DIY)

My used RX 590 came "dead" to me as it would not accept the drivers and it wouldn't work even of I tried to flash another bios but then I come to find out that it had a Bios switch and it was on Bios1, then I flipped it and it finally worked on Bios 2 lol, so maybe try out if it has a bios switch? Not sure if it was the same in Australia as in the U.S. but one thing to remember about the 480s/580s etc (other than age) is that they lived through one more crypto boom than everything else (and probably had it the worst as people started to get dialed in).
Worked at Micro Center at the time it was going on between late 2016 to late 2017 and I can say that pretty much every miner in Ohio wanted only a bunch of 580s. Heck one would get returned and open-boxed and would be sold again online before even getting put on a shelf.
Definitely not saying not to pick them up if the prive is right and it works though. I think a build video upgrading the tech-yes mobile to add a portable test bench like NOAB would be great.

On Amazon US I found a listing for a replacement MB matching that Lenovo Legion.
Desktop Motherboard 5B20W27646 8S5B20W27646 Compatible Replacement Spare Part for Lenovo Legion T5-28IMB05 R5-28IMB05 Series Intel Chipset B460 Socket LGA1200
Searching: t5-28icb05 front panel connectors I found a redit article.
    Comment:
The correct front panel connector is below the white fan connector in your picture.
Notice that the top left pin is removed. 1st row: x12, 2nd row 345. Connect the power switch to pins 1 and 4. Then connect the power light to pins 2 and 5. Power light polarity matters so if it's not working, reverse the connectors on pins 2 and 5.

I had an old 4th gen lenovo motherboard that had weird pinouts for the power button. Instead of the normal layout the power pins were actually vertical and the rest switch had to be diagonal. It was weird, luckily I had the case and was able to trace the wire layouts.

Scored a used RX 6700 XT for $120. It was sold for parts for driver code 43. Turns out there was some dried up substance on a couple of SMDs that was shorting the GPU out. After a bit of cleaning, it was alive and well again, now I can upgrade my brother's Tesla M40!!!

Great video! And thanks for the "Meta"-Hint. At a time when 580s were still a good choice at the downturn of the last mining craze I got a whole bunch of those - somehow was more lucky, they all worked. (Those were all regular ebay cards in Germany so maybe people are more careful to posting their trash on normal ebay these days with paypal and such?!) Anyhow thank you for the hint, will be careful if I should ever buy another of those ancient mining cards! Love the show!

I have a Lenovo board like that, I think the power switch does have a weird pin out. Try the "lone pin" + the middle pin with no neighbor on one side. All five go into the power button, for reset and LED. If that doesn't work just try a process of elimination, you should get it, can't break it. I don't happen to have a CPU to test in it at the moment.

    • @MatthewKiehl
      @MatthewKiehl 10 місяців тому

Oh and the power switch header is a little 5 pin thing. What looks like a front panel header is actually a LED header that goes to a little LED control board.

When it comes to cards that don't need extra PCIe power such as that 1050Ti or like a 1650, what would you pay for those cards? In my local area (within 20km) here in Canada on one classfied site there's 2x 1050 Ti options I see currently, one (Asus Dual) is $80 CAD then another (Asus Phoenix) is $100 CAD while for a 1050 (non-Ti) there's a complete build with one paired with a i3-6100 & 8GB RAM for $200 CAD with a 500W EVGA 80+ (White) PSU so perhaps a better performing card such as a 970 or 1060 may be a option to replace the 1050 to use the 1050 in a build with a weaker PSU. For something older there's a EVGA 750 (non-Ti) for $50 CAD or for a complete build with a 745 there's a Acer Prebuilt with a i7-4790 & 12GB RAM for $180 CAD then someone else got pretty much the same but with a 1TB+700GB HDD instead of a 2TB listed for $300. Finally for a 1650 there's a MSI Gaming X for $100 ($99) CAD, MSI Ventus for $125 CAD obo and a MSI Ventus GDDR6 varient for $200. CAD

The lowest I'll go for Intel these days is 4th gen and even that's really feeling its age. 2nd gen Intel is even hard to recommend for a basic office PC. There might be some value there as an emulation box but that's kind of an iffy prospect as people would want games included.

I just got a pc from an ebay auction for 215 inc shipping with a r5 2600x 16gb ram and an rx580...unfortunately the gpu crashes under low load and gives artifacts but i got 70 euros from the seller as kind of a refund. I love that tbh cause now i can just resolder new vram and get it working again

I think people are seriously overvaluing the 10 series Nvidia cards. That 1080ti for 250 was a bad deal.

Doesn’t Windows shutdown with old CPUs? I don’t know how you keep them working, but it’s cool you do.

i think i have been looking at this the wrong way
    motherboards and gpu are key
a basic system with a old cpu that can be upgraded is a gold mine
    i picked up a ryzen 7 1700 with Gigabyte GA-AB350N for $75 upgrading the cpu to Ryzen 7 5800X3D !!!!

The GPU you want to buy is 7 years old the average GPU life span is 4 years is it worth the money?

The gpu you should buy is the one that fits in your budget that isn't bottlenecked by the rest of your pc setup. If buying used look at the condition of the card and test if possible yourself or get some proof of working before buying is best practice.
