Thank you Magnus! When I was a child, our school bus passed Mr. Monroe’s 200 acre farm on Long Hollow Pike in Goodlettsville Tennessee. I’m an amatuer Bluegrass Fiddler & also pick mandolin.

Thanks so much Magnus. What a great tune and you have broken it up nicely so that it is really easy to learn by ear. Now I'm working hard on getting it clean and up to speed!

Thanks! Yes, that´s the way to do it. Learn it slowly and then bring it up to speed. Best of luck!

Nice one Magnus, thanks! I love the arrangement and the open sounding chords/double stops! The lesson was easy enough to follow along, though I had some trouble getting the hang of the timing of the "second section" of the A part. Looking forward to another lesson!

Thanks Simon! I´m glad you say you can follow the lesson. I try to do it so that the watcher can learn while watching and play a long with me. Like I would do if we were in the same room. For the "second section" of the A-part, maybe listen to my play-through of the song a couple of times, that will probably give you the idea of the timing.
Oh yes, there´s more lesson coming up. :-)

This was really helpful, I'm new to mandolin but I played the violin for 8 years so I find myself in-between levels. This was just difficult enough for me to feel challenged but not so hard that I wanted to give up. Might save the ornaments for next week though haha.

Great! Your violin background will be of much help when it comes to playing Mandolin. Keep up!

I have found it best to dedicate about 30-45 minutes to your lessons, and keep blank TAB paper in front of me as you go along. I've been able to keep up better with that and retain the tune a lot better! I have this fear of memorizing it and losing it shortly after.

One of my favorite tunes. I like the deliberate pace. I think i learned it from Kevin Burke.

For rhythm, the A and B endings scream out for C, E, Am rather than just G and back to Am.

Hi Magnus--had a lot of fun learning this song from you and I've signed up to your mailing list!
As far as other Bill Monroe tunes, Jerusalem Ridge comes to mind.
Very much looking forward to your future videos.

Oh yes, I put Jerusalem Ridge to the list. I've learned a Tim O'Brien version of that song that I'm happy to share. We keep in touch!

Yes, I love that video! I play a version of Jerusalem Ridge that combines that with some things I heard Tim O´Brien doing in this video. Have you seen this? ua-cam.com/video/hDMaSMARSJA/v-deo.html
