Thanks for answering some of my questions. This year was my first growing from seed. Lots of trial & error, but you showed me I'm still on the right track. Thank you for that peace of mind.
Me too (can you tell from my moniker?). I started my tomatoes, peppers, petunias, onions and eggplant about 10 days ago and was kicking myself that I got them in so late, but with a heating pad big enough for four trays, everything has sprouted pretty fast and a lot of my hot peppers have already germinated. I think next year I’ll get the peppers and some of the flowers in earlier but this is about the right time for the tomatoes which germinate and grow faster. I’m in zone 5A and supposedly have a last frost date of May 10, but twice in the last 15 years we have had snow in May; last year I think it was May 9, so I’m shooting for probably the weekend before Memorial Day and Memorial Day weekend to get my transplants in the ground.
You can plant hardened-off tomatoes in ground, place a cage, add straw mulch, and wrap a frost cloth around & over the cage. The roots will grow even though the tops just appear to sit there doing nothing. I'm next door in MN and have great success with this! Try it-- even if it "fails" and the tops freeze, remember those roots are likely still alive and will GROW!
Great video 👍. When watering with the fish fertilizer, perhaps you could have you tray with zero holes beneath. This allows excess to absorb into the potting mix. 😁 Then transfer to a clean indoor tray. Less smell 😜??🤣
Great video! I love the idea of the clear plastic tray for watching the roots of seedlings. I planted half of the MKN family beans, and they sprouted in only 4 days!!! They are growing quickly in our hoop house, and I love seeing how quickly they are growing-thank you so much!!!
Mahalo Melissa, awesome video, simple and direct. I like that you get right into your subject with no fluff. I start in a very similar way. BTW I read that the EU states are making it illegal to harvest seeds, just sharing.
Yes 24 oz yogurt or cottage cheese pots....however if container is too deep the youngest seedlings' roots won't reach the bottom watering yet, and, there is good research that potting up 2 or 3 times (which slightly disturbs tomato roots) actually spurs on stronger root system. This does not apply to all other seedlings -- YMMV-- but tomatoes actually benefit from some slightly rough handling.
I have that same type of 💦 watering can. Cracks me up when you had to pour from the top when the end was clogged. I use a long neck smaller can for more gentle trickle watering around new seedlings.
The Alaska fish fertilizer definitely has a smell. Lol. It it works very well. My tomatoes are looking ok. My cherokee tomatoes were looking a little iffy but that fertilizer will help. My San marzano are looking beautiful and my beefsteak are getting there. They were planted a little bit later than I wanted but still in my starting range so that’s good. Seed savers was having 30 day shipping delays so I got my Lina sisco bird egg beans and German pink beefsteak tomatoes a little later.
I just love your videos and always learn a few great tips! I have been using banana water for my indoor plants and having great success. Can I use that on my seedlings or outdoor veggies as well?
Great video! Three questions: how long ago did you start your seeds; at what temps will you feel comfortable transplanting outside (nightly lows); how do you acclimate the plants from being inside to being outside? Thanks!
Thanks for the nitrogen tip. Going to pick up some 5-1-1 tomorrow. My tomato's plants are big and looking great. What's the lowest night time temps tomatoes can handle? My plants are getting big already.
I germinated white currant tomatoes. Mine are half the length as yours. Some seeds has spilt into 2-3 plants. Should I separate them when I re-pot or plant them together. Technically they are from one seed.
So my fish fertilizer came in today. I did it outside, let them sit 5 hours, brought them in and my family says the whole house smells. Hopefully it goes away overnight!
With all this warm weather coming to the Pacific NW this week, I started thinking we were past the last frost date (I'm just east of Arlington). I was going to start hardening them off to put them in the garden. Are you still going to wait until mid May?

I'm in WI. We have frost until the end of May, so I don't start planting in ground until then. I just started my seeds.
us, too ;)

I’m all the way in Winnipeg, zone 2b. And average last frost is may 23. Crazy that your last frost is so late

@@cherylanon5791 Thanks!
I got that one at Costco and loved it for my tomatoes and peppers
Can't wait to get our winter garden up and running so we can start early planting from seeds too.
Great video 👍.

Why?
My grandma taught me the same thing! Love channel ❤️❤️
Very nice video, full of great information. Thank you for sharing.👩🏼🌾
Welcome!
So much good information, THANK YOU! 🌻
I start my seeds in 2# used yogurt containers with holes drilled in the bottom so I only transplant once directly into garden when ready.
Cottage cheese containers are great also, so that you don’t have to pot up. 😊
Also butter bowls...if you don’t already use them for Tupperware like me 😂

@@NorthnSouthHomestead That's so my mom 🤣
This was s inspiring, I’m settled my up my own herb garden for my recipes .
As spend a fortune on organic from supermarkets
That’s a nice trick to use. I’m so bad at throwing away seedlings!

Excited to start gardening! Thank you for your great tips!

great hack
Great video! Three questions: how long ago did you start your seeds; at what temps will you feel comfortable transplanting outside (nightly lows); how do you acclimate the plants from being inside to being outside? Thanks!
I just CAN’T throw away seedlings. I feel so bad for them.
If it help, compost them and they will be working a different way and still end up being in the soil.
Plant em somewhere just cause
Something is eating my tomatoes. Can’t find it! What do you use for this
Like your hair!
I was noticing your table. It seems to be a substantial box flipped upside down over a pair of saw horses. I can use that.
the best option is seperate container... Thanks
Thanks for the nitrogen tip. Going to pick up some 5-1-1 tomorrow. My tomato's plants are big and looking great. What's the lowest night time temps tomatoes can handle? My plants are getting big already.
have you ever kept bees on your farm? If so, do you have any advice for new beekeepers?
I just purchased the pots and tray you recommended... but three doesn't fit across in a row. Did you use 3" pots in this video? Thanks again.

Have you put out your brassicas already? Covered?
Mine are, you can put them out 2 to 4 weeks before your last average frost date
My brassicas have been hardened off for 3 days now..I'm tempted to plant soon!
What are your boots you are wearing? I have some Hunter boots but they have cracked and split and I'm looking at new boots.
So my fish fertilizer came in today. I did it outside, let them sit 5 hours, brought them in and my family says the whole house smells. Hopefully it goes away overnight!
This might be a dumb question but if your kids are allergic to fish can you still use fish fertilizer in the garden for veggies?
That’s a really good question. Following!
Yes, as long as it doesn't touch the finished product.
Did she say fish fertilizer????...ha busted!!!... you're one step closer to aquaponics!!!!...yeyyyy
Where are you located - zone - state- last frost date - ????????????
Are your grow lights LED? Everything I keep reading is telling me to have them a minimum of 8” from my seedlings but that seems so far away. Help!
No, they're not LED but my friend owns a flower farm and does LED but she says 2 inches. I got and LED light to test this year
With all this warm weather coming to the Pacific NW this week, I started thinking we were past the last frost date (I'm just east of Arlington). I was going to start hardening them off to put them in the garden. Are you still going to wait until mid May?
Yes, I always wait. Warm days with clear skies means colder overnight lows. We're getting frosts and 25 degree mornings right now.
Thank you! We just moved up here from Lynnwood and we're up a little bit so I have no idea when it's safe up here.
Why wouldn't you just grow direct in the 4inch container? Save some time.
I can't cover all those to keep them humid during germination phase.
This advice is very basic and obvious if you have gardened for even 5 minutes in your life. "Mason Jar ADDICT" t-shirt should have been the giveaway.
