How I'm Keeping Slugs & Cabbage Moths OFF My Plants Organically
Вставка

- We’ve always practiced organic gardening without knowing it growing up, using methods my grandparents and great grandparents did. Organic gardening is the art and practice of gardening without synthetic pesticides and chemicals.
In this video, I'm transplanting my cabbage seedlings into the garden, plus sharing my tips on protecting brassicas from cabbage moths and slugs.
If you deal with crop loss due to pests, this is one video you must watch, these two tips saved my crops last year.

My wife tried that beer trap for slugs a couple years ago. And it was amazing how well it worked. Never seen so many dead slugs at one time. And I'm pretty sure they died happy....
Hello neighbor! I just planted my brassicas yesterday here in sunny Bremerton Wa. I have yet to use the beer trap method but will definitely try it this year. Sure beats what my aunt used to do.. she'd go out to her garden in the middle of the nite with scissors and a flashlight and cut the little suckers in half! Lol! I'll be checking out your podcast this week. I have a feeling it will be my favorite thing to listen to while I'm out in the yard. Thank you so much for sharing your infinite knowledge with the world! We appreciate it very much! Can't wait for more videos!
Happy growing!
♥️🌱♥️🌱♥️🌱♥️🌱♥️🌱♥️
The beer trap is how my wife got me. It works :)
😂
Yes! Good tip for nitrogen fixers followed by brassicas. For the slugs I do this trick too! My six year old thinks beer is for killing slugs and snails 🐌 ! Lovely video Melissa!
Yes! Beer traps! Also you can spread diatomaceous earth around. I've seen where people buy some sort of Iron pellet in bags from garden centers and that keeps them out. Native Americans would burn a big hard wood fire and take the ash then circle their garden space with it. It's said many insects would not cross that barrier? I personally use "cold pressed" neem oil for all insect critters and hydrogen peroxide mixture for mildews.
Omg!!! I just received your book!! Yay and early Mother’s Day gift to myself!
Does anyone else get a little excited when a montage goes on long enough that you get the extended version of the background music? It's so fun and bouncy!!
Glad you enjoy the music!
I will be using that beer idea. I have never grown cabbage before, but I did order some floating row covers for them. I guess I should plant the seeds indoors today. I will probably order a book from your collection. Sometimes this gardening thing is overwhelming. I’m new at this. My tomatoes are doing really good indoors. In spite of the stress, it’s really kinda fun. ☮️💕
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and are interested in a book be sure to check out The Family Garden Plan!
Woohoo! Original beer garden - they get to rave all night and die happy! I’ve done this too, and my tip is to buy the biggest cheapest beers you can find - in quantity and tell the store clerk it’s for a killer party🤣
Okay that's funny I don't care who you are, LOL. Who says gardeners don't have a sense of humor
Nope, you get what you pay for. I find Guinness works best.
This is going to sound weird but it was so encouraging to see your bitty seedlings! Mine are little compared to most I see on other folks’ sites I think because I don’t have a greenhouse or fancy grow lights and it was a bit discouraging.
I'm going to try the beer on slugs and see how it works. I like to use Neem oil on all of my fruit trees, flowers, hot peppers, cabbage and every thing else that grows. It's very organic.
you can also use a dry yeast, water, sugar and flour mixture if you want to save beer.
I don’t get 🐌 here in the high desert of California but pill bugs and earwigs eat my seedlings. Last year I used the beer trap and it worked perfectly. Those nasty bugs aren’t eating my garden any more.
Those bugs are good for your garden
Awesome as always!!!
Thank you!
@@MelissaKNorris Stay blessed and beautiful!!

Very useful tips...Thanks for sharing.
I have good luck with marigolds keeping cabbage moths away!
I do too but the marigolds and nasturtiums don't survive frosts and aren't big enough to bloom yet so I need something in the meantime.
Love your Videos. Thank you so so much for your time and helping me and others keeping us and our family healthy. God bless you and your family. Thank you for everything you do.
You are so welcome!
I like using pieces of plywood. Lay them flat and during the day lift them up and collect all the slugs. They like to hide under the wood.
Still getting hard freezes in Colorado. Can’t wait til I have some land and can put a decent greenhouse up. Desperately need to extend my growing season
I learned a trick a few years ago from a pro gardener in the UK...the beer traps work even better if you cover them with something. He nailed a couple of little scraps of wood together in an A-frame shape and put it over top of the trap. The difference in how many slugs he caught was significant. Apparently they like beer even better if they can stay under cover to get it!
Melissa, what a good video,YOU'RE tough as nails. Out side in short sleeve's while the mountain's in the back ground are covered in snow. Have a GRACEFUL SPRING, AND BLESSED SUMMER. LOVE FROM N.C.
The first time I tried baiting slugs with beer, I put beer in an aluminum pie pan and hid it in some shrubs. The next day or so the pan was filled with perhaps a 100 slugs! I was so grossed out, that I just left it there in the yard. Later that day, we noticed the pan was empty...guessing maybe birds came and ate them! It definitely works but I have heard the one downside is that it may attract slugs from your neighbor’s yard to yours!
Nice video Melissa. I am in zone 7, and planted my zucchs and snap peas a few weeks ago. The greens are in too, but I have not yet planted brocs or cucs -- probably Thursday. I have 2 more trees to plant to add to the 50 or so I have -- so busy this time of year.
We used to use cat food cans. Or other short cans and dig them a bit into the ground for beer traps. Also the plastic containers Chinese food and other take out comes in.
Thank you for sharing your container suggestions!
Melissa I'm glad you found something that really works for your plants because you have some really huge slugs
Great video! We just moved to new property in Western WA and the slug issue is real. I’m also finding a problem with deer and voles. I’d love more pest control videos for more pests like that too!
I tried beer traps last year and had zero success. I had to resort to hunting them at night and making slug kabobs. I love those tunnels! They seem so much easier than the floating row covers!
I love it! Get the slugs drunk and no more problems! lol. Who knew! This is great! This is the first year I've had problems with slugs! I find it ironic that I found the issue today and your channel popped up on my feed! lol. Thank you...I wasn't sure what to do!
Love the channel and what you and your family do/teach (gardening, livestock, etc). My little fam raises a few beef each year, have a small flock of chickens for eggs, and are trying to do more gardening. I love self sufficiency. Nothing better than sitting down to a steak, baked potato, and salad all produced on my the little farm.
My dad used beer traps in our garden. He used to drink Blatz beer - it was the cheapest he could get and always worked well.
So great to have you here!
I throw cedar pet bedding around for cabbage moth. I sprinkle lightly around my boxes on he ground and the same for my bags. I’m usually inundated with cabbage moth and I’ve only seen a couple this year. I refresh every few days depending on if the chips look to weathered. One large bag has lasted about 3 months. It’s cheap. I forget how much but it’s worth it.
I don’t have a problem with slugs in Northern California - Thank God. We have enormous banana slugs. 😳 - CG
Hi there fellow gardener. Great to see so many in their gardens. Here in Maine, it's still a bit early. Don't have problems with slugs, but those pesky cabbage moths. Many blessings.
As you were tilling where the bean plants were, I noticed that there not many roots. I’m not sure if you know this, but by leaving the bean plants in over winter (more specifically the roots), come spring, the roots will have broken down and provided even more nitrogen for the soil. Leave bean plant roots in. Kindest regards, excellent videos! 😊👍
I'm using a 3 step method; I have a 9 VDC electric fence around the edge of my raised beds, then I have beer traps, and finally I put a bowl with the bottom cut out. They have a 1" flat lip around the top outside. The slugs cannot get around it. So far so good.
Still in the low 40s here in Portland metro at night & up to 70-80° during the day. Thanks for reminding me about the beer trap method. I will have to try that.
I do this also for pill bugs and slugs. But more me only budweiser gets them they ignore all other beers i put in mine
If you use a margarine container with lid you cut holes and inch from bottom then it protects the beer from being washed away from rain.
Best thing to do is get the pass early on especially the slugs and snails. Great info
Oh boy, Oh Boy.
Contributating to the delinquency of the minor slugs. LOL
I had to add my 2 cents.
Melissa can you tell me why you bury your seedlings in the bottom of a trough?
I was wondering this, too.
I’ve seen this done in drier climates so that you can water by simply pouring water into one end of the trench, but I don’t think that’s necessary where she lives and could even drown some plants in areas that get that much rain. But she must have her reasons.
Going to put my brassicas out this weekend.
Hasn't it been so lovely up our way? I was actually wearing shorts while planting potatoes this week. We'll be going through Skagit tomorrow and I'm looking forward to how pretty it will be.
Beautiful weather!
Cut bottom off 1 gal water jugs- put over plant. No frost & warm during day . Remove lid.
Great info thanks
I do not do crop rotation. I have planted my tomato's in the same spot for 20 years. No disease issues and they grow me delicious tomato's. I do amend the soil in that area every year.
I do my beer traps like a wasp trap - cut a bottle in half and stuff the neck in upside down. Lay on its side, on a bit of an incline so it doesnt spill. Slugs get in, but can't get out. Also, the beer won't evaporate before the slugs get at it.
Alcholics.. Lol
I'm a little surprised you are planting single rows instead of wide rows, but I'm sure you experimented to see want works best for you. I was in the garden plots earlier today, since rain was supposed to be coming tonight, I was breaking up the soil around my veggies so they would get a good drink, when I saw a white butterfly flying around my broccoli and Brussel sprouts, I wished I had brought a leaf rake with me to swat it down , but as I got closer I saw it was a female clouded Sulphur, I saw a male Sulphur about 30 minutes later. Then out of nowhere, there was a brown tree frog I captured and put in my potato patch, hope it will grow fat on potato bugs. Many people say it is work to have a garden, but I think it is fun.
Good video. I use an organic product called "Sluggo". I think it's Iron Phosphate. Works really well.
Yes, very good and harmless to hedgehogs. Metaldehyde slug pellets are devastating to hedgehogs and should not be used, although farmers do. This is shooting yourself in the foot as hedgehogs eat slugs most nights of the year.
A very organic method of keeping arthropod and mollusc pests off your crops.
I’m new to your channel and live your videos. Would flat beer be as effective and how often would you replace the beer?
Here on the east coast in Southern Maryland my brassicas are plagued by cabbage moths. I bought floating row covers. Last year my beets were absolutely destroyed by finches. This year those are also covered up along with my spinach. So far I’ve had poor germination on my peas, I’ve planted them 3 times and tonight it’s going to be 38 degrees! Ridiculous. Gardening has different challenges every year!
I’d get caught in my own beer trap. Going to try it though.
Haha!
😂
Love u and you tube show awesome
Your soil is so light and fluffy, did you add something to it or is it naturally like that? Also how do you water your garden?
No, we have great soil here
While I do get cabbage moths and slugs, my biggest nemisis is quack grass here in Olympia. Do you have it at your location, and if so, how do you deal with it. TIA
My problem is slugs in the rain. I still have to figure out a kind of cover for the beer bowl so that it doesn't get washed away in a rain shower.
I love to use wooden skewers and make a slug kabob or I salt them. I don’t mind killing slugs. Lol.
I have done this several years and still get them but the beer traps are great. I’m out of beer and need to get some more.
Melissa come to Florida!
instead destroying trees we can be able to use Forest as building blocks then tearing blocks. I love the Teal colors. I hope you can this wise advise why? We can be able to change the world in 2 ways not just 1 we can be able to grow gardens in trees and grow them on the trees and we could make a new species
Re slugs, I caved in and bought pellets. Not what I wanted to do but due to the fact that I sowed and raised and transplanted three sets of seedlings and the slugs decimated the lot overnight. I tried beer traps, laying planks and half orange shells, you name it I tried it. Sadly the most successful thing has been commercial pellets. In my defense I DO keep the raised beds covered so no birds eat the poisoned slugs and each morning I go out and dispose of them. But I couldn't face losing another lot of crops to slugs, we're growing to survive, that's the truth and I was feeding the wildlife! :(
Once the seedlings grow bigger and heartier I will quit using the pellets because then they'll be more able to withstand the onslaught. I didi read somewhere the average garden contains around thirty thousand slugs. I think my lot brought in reinforcements. Or it could simply be Ireland's damp rainy weather.
Your soil looks gorgeous btw!
What pellets are you referring to?
Try diatomaceous earth
@@rebeccajohnson1368 commercial slug pellets. very common but they contain a chemical that's poisonous to slugs and snails. I've tried your suggestion but here in Ireland the wet climate and my clay, boggy soil is an ideal breeding ground for them.
How often do you place the beer trap along your row? It seems like those plants on the end wouldn't be close enough to that tray for it to be effective over there.
One per row has been fine for me, they come to it from all over
Pest prevention methods ----> beer trap for slugs @7:00 / easy tunnel for cabbage moths @9:25
I love slugs and snails 🐌 but I don’t like them on my plants so I will make sure to never use the beer trick it’s a good idea but I like slugs and snails so I think I’ll just remove them manually :)
Would this tunnel work for squash bugs? Great idea.
I think so!
What brand of boots are you wearing? Love your videos!
How do you water with the row covers on? Are they porous enough to allow water to go through or do they have to be removed? Thanks!
Will the beer attract slugs that aren’t already in the area?
Great gardening! Add some eggshell powder. You will get good results. I am making eggshell organic fertilizer at home
Eggshells are great if you need calcium but my soil is high in calcium so I"m not adding extra right now. :)
Thanks for a good understanding of agriculture@@MelissaKNorris
I save my banana peels and egg shells- dry them out in oven and blend to powder.
@@Warrior-In-the-Garden Great idea, but I don't dry in the oven. I have a video on how to make the perfect organic fertilizer from the banana peel, eggshell, etc. I did a great experiment. some videos about home organic fertilizer products will be uploaded soon. try to use. you get nothing loss
What was the suggested video to watch on what to plant with other plants to help them out
Episode 299. I wrote it down because I'm old and have CDs. 😄
Stupid autocorrect! Crs! Can't remember stuff.
I am having a serious problem in my yard with those rolly polly bugs. They seem to be in everything and under everything. I even found them eating in the stems of my squash plants last year and they killed them by boring into it. Any organic cures?
Ferrous Sulphate slug pellets.
That slug trap is good for about 1 slug from what I've seen in your previous videos....
They're babies still right now, hoping to get them all at this stage 😊
Hi
How long do you leave the row cover on? We tried brussel sprouts one year and pests bored holes through every “Bud”.
The moths lay eggs on the plants but is that later in the season or early. It’s tough keeping an organic garden here.
We have just about every pest possible🙄.
Thanks Alex
Does the beer stop working when it goes flat?
Why dont I ever hear of anyone using diatomaceous earth? Not one mention on any homestead channel...?
Because it's ineffective once it rains or gets wet so for most climates that battle slugs (slugs like damp/wet) it's not effective
Hi. What was the fish stuff that you were taking about
You can find info and link in the description of the video 🙂
I honestly don't understand why/ how some people seem to swear by beer traps.... Ive lost my entire garden one year to slugs and i had tried every type of beer in so many different sized containers.... All the beer did was atract the slugs more.
Why are you growing them in a trench rather than on a flat level surface?
Slugs also hate Epsom salt as well as diatomaceous earth.
DE doesn't work once it gets wet and Epsom salt is magnesium not actually salt like table salt that kills them
@@MelissaKNorris It's magnesium sulfate and it's the texture they hate. We sprinkle it at the base of the plants and sometimes mix it into the soil and it works wonders!
@@WinsomeWinslet maybe I didn't work enough in, I'll have to test it again
just so you know beer traps will catch slugs but they will also make slugs come from blocks away because they smell the beer.
Where did you purchase the accordion row cover?
I have the links in the description of the video 🙂
anyone tried beer trap with cabbage loopers? they are bane of our existence here. we're already putting a lot of BT down.
This is definitely a different kind of "beer garden"
and if they are on your plants you can spray them with apple cider vinegar, it dissolves them
copper tape , next
Beer bottle with an inch of beer tom trap slugs
Your link for the mesh row covers does not work
It's working for me, what happens when you click it?
What zone are you in?
slugs breed in the fall.

I wish I had a green thumb 😒
You do!
Nature will teach You...
and in the mean time listen to Melissa :-)
All the best
You need a little john deer tractor.
🧑🌾⚠️👷We have the CURE for the cabbage Moth!
Tell me you didn't buy Asian pears! or what ever it was that came in that packaging.
If one has hens, beer traps is collecting hen feed.
The package is several years old because I reuse them but don't hate on Asian pears. There's nothing wrong with buying fresh fruit if you don't have that variety producing yet. And my chickens don't eat slugs. Ducks do but the chickens never touch them (neither do any of my neighbors chickens).
Why are you putting the plants in a trench? This is my first time watching your video.

Beer purists throughout the world are crying out at wasting it on slugs... okay maybe not... 😂.
Not for non-alcoholic Busch...they're probably applauding somewhere that she's pointing out it's useful for ONE thing, at least...
