  • In this video, I'll show you how you can use your garmin instinct and project a waypoint and navigate to it. We project a waypoint usually when we reach a location, then receive instructions to proceed at a specific compass bearing and distance.
An example would be a multi-stage geocache or finding a water source off-trail.
    1. PRESS the GPS button and SCROLL down past the list of favorites and stop when your see PROJECT WAYPOINT.
2.Use the UP/DOWN BUTTON to specify the BEARING. Once you have it set, PRESS the GPS button to apply it.
    3. Next you will be able to set the distance. Again once you have the value you want, press the GPS button to apply it. Note that you can change UNITS with the DOWN BUTTON. Press the GPS button once done.
Note that resulting coordinates will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
At this point you just created a new waypoint, you can now change the NAME, ICON and other features. and of course you can also DELETE if you made a mistake.
Once you have this part done, you can now NAVIGATE TO the new waypoint.
    4. From the MAIN screen, PRESS the GPS button and SCROLL down to NAVIGATE.
    5. Select SAVED LOCATION and find the waypoint you just created.
    6. Select GO TO, once you get GPS signal acquisition, you can press again the GPS button to start the navigation.

Because of the way this works, you can't be doing an activity and project a waypoint at the same time. Garmin is so weird. Everything they make always, ALMOST, works the right way.... but not quite.

Is there a way to disable to 'Arriving at coordinates' message that pops up on the watchface when you get within about 30-40 feet from the coordinates? For things like geocaching, I would rather be able to get right up on the coordinates than end up with it being somewhere approximately 40 feet in front of me. I've searched through the options and can't seem to find anything that controls that message.
I've made due with it so far, but it increases the time spent rummaging around particularly dense areas for nanos.

I have the same problem. I used to use my Forerunner for geocaching because it's more accurate than a phone. That would get you right to the coordinates and then you could move around to really zero in on it. Unfortunately the instinct software doesn't seem to work the same way. I found a setting that seems to control that but the minimum distance you can set it to is .05 miles. I just e-mailed Garmin about it, maybe if enough people want it changed they can put it in an update. I see you posted this 4 months ago so if you've found a solution I would love to hear it.

I got a response from Garmin. I just read the e-mail and set it up but haven't tried it myself yet.
      "please try the below instructions".
      You can use your Instinct
      1. Hold Menu
      2. Select “Setting“
      3. Select “Navigation“
      4. Select “Data Screens”
      5. Click “Screen1” > “Field1” (You can customize your Screen and field)
      6. Select “Navigation Field”
      7. Select “Dist. Remaining”

How would I know in the first time the bearing and distance of the waypoint?

you would know the details of that stage. For example, for a multi-stage geocache, you usually get the initial waypoint to go to, then punch in the final destination & bearing after you figured out the clue/riddle/puzzle.
Or you get general directions from somebody to say to launch you kayak/canoe from this location and proceed distance/bearing to unmarked landing spot.

If I'm out and use a map and compass to find a grid I want to go to on the map, can I input the 6/8 figure grid into the watch and it will direct me to said grid I'm looking to go to?

I’d just use the create & navigate to waypoint function as opposed to project in that scenario
