I think a better "survival tool" is the "sight and go" feature in navigation. Say you can see a feature off in the distance, like a tower or hill top, but you know you won't be able to see it once you get in the trees. You can select the "sight and go" feature, aim the top of the watch at the distant object, select GPS, and the watch will display a line that will always be pointing at that object. So as you weave in and around trees and land feature in the woods, you'll always be able to veer back to that line and proceed in the direction of the distant feature. This is more of a survival tool, since you don't have your original location stored in the watch, or it's not where you need to get to.
Hi Pokey, I think you make a great point. I am going to do a quick video on the sight n' go feature soon. I appreciate you taking the time to leave such a detailed and positive comment, and hope you have a great day!
That is cool!
@ Pokey
Great point. I will definitely try the "sight and go" out. 👍👍
Also, if you are going to venture off, first set a point and call it "Adventure 1", then, put on "track me", and go off to your hearts content (still be mindful of marking landmarks and looking backwards of course), and then you can view by zooming out your starting "Adventure 1" location marker, while also having your specific trail tracked as well, making it so you can freely explore with an easy way back. I think you can also just "track me" and then set your starting saved location, as well as others as you go, is probably the efficient way to set this up.
The instinct also has the tracback option which also guides you back to start but exactly using the same route you walked. It presents you with a breadcrumb map on the watch and tells you if you are on or off course. I find this even more useful..
Hi George, thank you for your informative comment! I agree that the trackback feature is a really valuable one on the watch. Please let me know if there is anything about the instinct you would like me to specifically review. I hope you have a great day!
Word,!
This video just made me love my Garmin instinct even more
Hi dman, I apologize for the delay getting back to you. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a positive comment and support the channel. I'm glad this video helped you like it even more. Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see reviewed and I will be happy to go into detail on it. Have a great day!
Thanks for the tutorial. I think it's a great feature when you're out in the woods hiking and get off track.
Hi Mario, thank you for your comment and support of the channel. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a positive comment and hope you have a wonderful day.
I usually just use the track me, and pause it if I am chilling at a certain spot, so it doesn't make a mess on the map, and this way, you can back track your EXACT course, it's really impossible to get lost this way, you can also download a course of the trail you are on if you are on a specific trail, for further redundancy, and lastly, you can save points along the trail such as questionable off shoots etc that are not clearly marked, and so you can go point to point if need be, even if you for instance fell off a cliff and needed to find your way back to the trail through a long work around, and while doing this, you could point a asmuth with "sight and go" after falling towards the marker you have on your map for the trailhead or turn, and then you could figure out a way all the way around and back up. =) Literally impossible to get lost with this amazing watch.
Very good info and well done!
Getting a solar soon and trying to watch as much content on these watches as I can because they are kind of overwhelming with all the features. Thanks for the great video!
Hi Andrew, thank you for the comment and support of the channel. I am glad the video is useful, and I definitely understand how overwhelming they can be. Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like me to cover on the channel, and I would be honored with your subscription. I hope you have a great day!
@@CoastieOutdoors just each and every feature man I love watching your videos on them!
I have this watch and haven't used the features. Let's do this. And thanks for making this video!!
Hi Central Florida Bigfoot, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate your positivity, and hope you have a great day!
Super cool, I'm very active outside, hanging out in different states, too. I wanted a smart watch for a while but was always off put by the price tags & was unclear on what to purchase. I was gifted this model for Christmas & it should arrive from Bass Pro tomorrow! Yay, i could have used the gps functions a time or two while hiking the Appalachian mountains of Western NC
Thank you for this very helpful video. Cheers. 👍
Hi Baroudeur, thank you for taking the time to leave a positive comment. I really appreciate it and am glad you liked the video. Please let me know if there is anything you would like me to review about the instinct. I hope you have a great day!
StraightBack has its appeal, but if I'm lost in the woods, I would be greatly concerned that I would encounter obstacles (rivers, cliffs, etc.) that breadcrumb would avoid. Especially if lost and at night/obscured visibility... FWIW, since I'm brand new to this watch/feature.
What a good video! 👍
Hi Hadi, thank you for your comment, support of the channel, and your positivity. We need more people like you in the world. I hope you have a great day!
@@CoastieOutdoors thank you very much indeed!
Zeby uzyc tego backtrack, wczesniejsza droge trzeba pokonac z wyznaczona trasa?
Hey Marcin, thank you for your comment! I’m sorry I only read English. I’ll put your comment into Google translate, but if you type in English I’ll be able to respond faster
im getting a brand new instinct solar for GBP 157 whereas a used instinct 2 solar is north of GBP 240. which is a better buy? im not into music or high end running features and not sure what IQ Connect has to offer. I am into offroading, hiking and camping only.
Hi Fareed, I am sorry for the delay getting back to you. Which one did you go with? I would recommend the the solar 1 version until garmin can sort out all the bugs in the new 2 model. That said, they are both great for what you like doing. I hope you have a great day!
What's the better watch? The Fenix 5 sapphire? Or this Instinct?
Hi Bryan, that is a great question. I personally prefer the Garmin Instinct for the following:
It is lightweight
It is durable/rugged
I like the aesthetic
That said the Fenix 5 sapphire has some good features as well. I believe black scout survival did a video comparing the Fenix with the Instinct and did a great job showing how the Instinct was a better deal if you like the tactical look. If you are trying to blend in a little more - which could be a big benefit in certain situations - the Fenix definitely can do that.
I would be honored with your subscription if you have not done so already. I hope that helps and you have a Happy New Years!
Brilliant feature thanks man. What's the battery life of this watch, I'm sure you've heard of the same watch but in solar?
Thanks IzziBoi1, I appreciate it! I think it is a really cool feature as well. I have heard of the solar version, and wish I had it. Honestly this version charges within 30 minutes, and has a battery life of 14 days if worn 24/7, and 16 hours if you are actively using the GPS functionality. I hope you have a great day boss!
@@CoastieOutdoors oh man that is more than enough battery life....no need for the solar at all haha!!!
@@isthi000ify I thought so too! :)
Does the instinct hAve the virtual partner arrow on the map?
Hi Gio Lopes, it sure does! I hope you have a great day!
Hi, great vid. I was wondering, do you know the screen diameter of the Garmin Instinct 1?
Hi Maulana Ibrahim Rau, thank you for the positive comment! The dimensions for the instinct 1 are:
45 x 45 x 15.3 mm
I hope you have a great day!
@@CoastieOutdoors Thanks for your info, however I was referring to the "screen diameter size". Is it 31.5mm or 32mm?
I’m a little disappointed, that obviously you cannot transmit single Positions via Connect app; further on you cannot navigate as the crow flies with a big visible compass like viewed on an etrex or foretrex.
Pleas let me know if I’m wrong!
Can you get map references on it?
Hi Steven, thank you for leaving a comment and supporting the channel. You can download pre-made courses with references on them, or create your own map references - which is what I recommend. If I am understanding your question right. I made a video outlining how to make map references and recommend you see if that will work for you. Thank you again and I hope you have a great day and Happy New Years!
👍👍👍
Thank you Derrick, I hope you have a great day!
