  • Our Poncho and a couple little items are all that is needed to make a super shelter, a solar super shelter. Many of the coldest days of winter are a clear sky after a cloudless night. Take advantage of the sun in your shelter, we show you how.

It would be interesting to see if some rocks could be warmed through the day to be used at night with this type of setup. Thanks Perry

Awesome vid, Perry! The warmth that the plastic provides with the radiant heat is amazing.

I just came across your video. Very nice. I always carry my poncho/tarp that I made along with a plastic sheeting and one of those space blankets. And if you have some duct tape or gorilla tape, which gorilla tape is what I carry, you could take small strips of tape to hold the space blanket to the inside back of the poncho and have a fire in the front.

BoB’s Woodland Adventures any good duct tape will work, I don’t carry a whole roll of tape take about 8 feet by folding it over itself in a 12” strip. You can use a tarp or poncho for the roof, clear plastic sheeting for the front window, and space blanket for the IR reflector, a fire 3-5 feet away will warm things nicely.

That is a good daytime variation of the Kochanski super shelter. I will add that to my bag of knowledge for shelter use. If you can get a fire going, I think the standard Kochanski super shelter is more suited for a wide range of conditions. It isn't always going to be sunny in the daytime or deep in a forest.

one could use this to catch your breath, and rest. and use the space to spark up a fire to take out front. then you can be ready for overnight. and carry 2 or 3 mylar blankets with you.

i have never been able to try this myself - in the movie "Jeremia Johnson' they dig a hole and put in a bottom of hot ashes from the fire and cover it up with sand - our hero did not have enough sand over the ashes - WOULD IT WORK?
