- I show step by step how to make a simple version of the Mors Kochanski's super shelter. I use the Tarp Buddy tarp "gripper" hardware to make things easier.

This product inspired me to use bottle necks for the same effect, I used it on plain tarp to make a hammock and it withstand my body weight.

I've heard people talk about super shelters and just figured it was a big tarp shelter, I hadn't heard the bit about the clear plastic letting the heat from your fire in and trapping it like a greenhouse. That's an interesting idea, thanks.

Excellent shelter I own three of those all weather blankets they work great for winter camping. Nice setup with the bipod as well. I use them a lot for hammock camping in the winter. I always learn something new from your videos. -Eric

I do like the Tarp Buddy idea! It's great if you're in a place you can't find useful materials for the same job. But I always been in locations where there's rocks or I could cut out a piece wood and use my paracord to tie the tarp around them tight and the other end to tree or pegged into ground, etc. But, yeah... Tarp Buddy good for places without those materials or to save time instead of looking all over the area for something. I do approve of the product for those reasons!

Excellent shelter Lonnie. I have used a super shelter in the middle of winter here in New Hampshire and had to take layers off so as not to overheat. The one we made was a leanto made with natural materials with the plastic on the front and mylar blankets on the inside of the roof...it worked really well but took a while to construct. I really like this "instant super shelter" design...looks like it would be quite packable and quick to setup. The low roof looks to be a very warm and efficient design with plenty of room for gear... I always pick up some great ideas and tips when I watch your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing and I hope all is well on your end Sir. :) -Lochlainn

TuckerSP2011 Thank you my friend. When my wife (the videographer) scooted into the shelter after the video was over she remarked how noticeably warmer it was with just the weak sunshine shining through the clear front and the reflective material interior.
Tarp Buddy is a great take off on the method that you taught us to use a rounded stone or marble. Gather the tarp around it. Then tie cord trapping the stone. Tarp Buddy is more versatile.

Nice shelter Lonnie Always nice to see new things coming out to help in making things easier, I always used small round river rocks or if none where around I would make some out of tree branches cut in about 1 in peaces, round the corners so it won't cut the tarp And it's Free lol Have a great day my friend :-)

+A J Taylor Thank you. Yes any tarp would work though perhaps not quite as well as the reflective surface tarps. Canvas tarps might work quite well also since they would allow some evaporation of moisture from under the tarp unlike the waterproof tarps

I am assuming the prices wont change much if they are able to upgrade their production facilities but I don't know that for sure. Pretty neat shelter Lonnie. I think that the reflected heat from radiating fire through the clear front and off the silver liner in low temperatures would be super...In temperate weather rather than plastic rig some screening or mosquito netting across the front for breathability. Tarps - Emergency Grommetless Options

This is like my little clear red plastic tube tent. I overlap the foot end into a point, and half hitch closed with the ridge line that is staked at the foot. I use my walking sticks for the bipod and half hitched together with the ridge line. Then stake out the front guy line. With the addition of putting duct tape above and below the tubing, one can use the walking stick points (or a grommet hole) keeping the head end corners in place. Otherwise, one can have some small ties keeping the tubing to the 2 walking sticks. I have enough free tubing at the head end to overwrap together and close it at night. If you overhand the mylar space blanket or sheeting inside the tent keeps things toasty. If you have further bugs (skeeters are determined to bite me!) then you can hand a mosquito netting from the ridge line inside of the mylar inside the plastic tent. Put the pad on the ground, and sleeping bag atop, and I have found that there is no moisture issues in my case, in all weather situations. Less than 5# overall, and using the equipment for my hiking/camping/bushcrafting.
You have the survival tarp made of what looks like cross-fiber house wrap and then reflective mylar inside. I am looking at making tyvek-mylar (60# test) tarp-shelter fabric, that is both water and moisture proof. Super light. If you want to spray camou colors on white tyvek, those are other spring-summer-fall color options. If you use a 3M x 3M (or U.S. 9 ft x 9 ft) tarp then you can make a conventional pup tent of 3 foot sides, and 3 foot footprint. Folds up into small and ultralight weight product. In summer, turn out mylar to reflect sun light and heat. In winter, turn inside for warmth and heat reflection. One can have the sideways tent side open (as flying tarp) to campfire and heat reflection of mylar down and into tent. At night, close up. Using velcro stripping at the foot and side, on can seal up the entire foot and side, with only the front needing closure. Using a 3 ft - 3 ft - 3 ft design. Start with the 3 ft foot print. Then it becomes the 3 ft left side of tent and ridge line edge. Then fold down the last 3 ft right side. If you put in a tyvek strip of loops or pockets at the 4 1/2 ft (on the left side), a 6 ft ridge line looping and/or pocketing strip, and a 7 1/2 foot (on the right side), you can hang and store vast amounts of items on the taut tent sidings. In all of the open and flying tarp designs, these same hanging and storage areas are of even greater opportunity. The tyvek (like Goretex) has micropores for breathability (moisture lock for houses, yet breathes), and outdoor moisture and water proof for the footprint and tarp/shelter - tent sides, and inside moisture controls.
All corner points in this design have reinforced tyvek and grommets, or tyvek loopings for staking or toggling with stakes. Using the 9 ft x 9 ft tarp design, the 6 ft ridge line has 2 slits with a cover fabric that allows you to have a 9 ft long pup tent, or a 7 ft pup tent (with 1 foot extra at foot and head ends). This allows the tent ends to be wrapped closed, or have a tightening line inside the sleeved edges to pucker close the tent ends.
This same tyvek/mylar has further applications for a hammock cot, hammock cot (coccoon overlap), hammock, hammock (coccoon overlap), ... or my further design of a totally hanging hammock chrysalis (like a butterfly chrysalis) from a horizontal/diagonal tree limb, or a safe dead fall trunk. The overlap imitates a bivy and removes the additional equipment of a tarp/shelter or bivy around a hammock or ground sleeping bag. Down to -40F. The overlap has the same velcro stripping at the foot and side edge maing for a totally enclosed bivy. With the wide and deep hammock design, the same velcro stripping, can zip shut the entire hammock edges above you for a total weather, rain/snow, wind proof design. Ultralight and matches and exceeds ENO hammock design. With addition of superlight double reflective mylar and bubble insulate wrap as the mattress pad (versus the ENO hammock quilt design) you have a vastly lightweight sleeping system. Easy set up, tear down, and backpack carrying.
John Lord Sounds to me like you need to do some videos of your unique setup. Sounds interesting. That tyvek is wonderful material from all I've heard. The trouble is that a person has to buy such an enormous volume of the product in order to have enough for a small product. I don't believe that they sell it in smaller amounts other than a contractors roll.
Wish I could do vids for everybody, but not able, production, vidding, etc. So I try and contribute when the topic is the same. You have good vids I like them, and your showing all the how to dos. And you have that tarp/mylar that I like. Your tarp material is the cross fiber housewrap (the lesser version of tyvek? Looks like some cross weaving design. Odd of Norwegian Bushcraft started all this topic with his spray gluing mylar onto his tarp, ... and everything else took off from there with a tyvek hammock cot and coccoon coverall (Mitch Native Survival), wool blanket hammock and hammock coccon (Dave Canterbury), and then my dual tripod tyvek hammock and coverall, and my masterpiece tyvek haning hammock pouch (butterfly chrysalis design) from tree limb or stable dead fall. Tyvek tarp/mylar has multiple season winter mylar in, summer mylar out design. Same tarp/mylar can also be tarp, flying tarp, or a 9 ft x 9 ft (or Canadian 3M x 3M) pup tent with intact footprint. Footprint 3ft (1M), to left side 3 ft up to ridgeline, then right side 3 ft). On all of these have foot and side edges mini velcro strip for total enclosures. Open pup tent tarp in daytime for campfire heat and reflection, close up at night for total heat retention and bug control. Just some ideas and designs. Even thinking (still attempting to do) double reflective mylar insulated bubble wrap tarp, pup tent, hammock et al if possible. Then -40F no problem!
Still trying to figure out who came up with the 5 by 7 dimension 8 by 10 or 10 by 10 would be much more practical. Thanks for the demonstration. Have a good evening

My suspenders were picked up second hand at a thrift store many years ago. They say "Husky" on them. I also have another pair that I also got at a thrift store as well. They say McGuire Nicholas on them.
Try a web search using the search term "work suspenders" and you should come up with plenty of options.

Have made this shelter many times tho never with the mylar tarps. Those tarps cost over 20bucks a piece here and taped together they are actually large enough to consider, regluar size are nothing i would want. Never tried a super shelter idea with it. It would have air flow from the sides by the ground, so you can breath lol . Well done and cool idea, ill have to try that sometime
Kullcraven Bushcraft I think you will be surprised by the benefits experienced from the reflective interior. A person could always try using a spray adhesive to laminate the cheap "space blankets" to the inexpensive poly tarp material. That would probably produce a sturdier but yet cheaper alternative to my method.
I like your method to be honest, just expensive for me, if they were a good size i love to have those tarps, and what you did, it is one large tarp awesome as always buddy.

Damn. To think all this time I've been using ping pong balls and bungee cords. Because I have a motorbike so tons of bungee cords and ping pong balls for cat toys.
Mind you I was just tarping the motorbike. I had a Canadian tire $40 tent 3 man, so 2 full size humans and a bit of gear.
And a tarp over the campsite about 8' up slightly slanted for rain runoff so I could have a few people over for a visit.
made a few chairs with just gorilla tape/duct tape going over a frame of 4 branches + legs using a basket weave. Actually pretty comfy.
+Lukiel666 lol I'll bet that duct tape chair was comfortable. I never have used ping pong balls and bungees but it sounds klike it would work fine. I have used marbles or rocks and paracord the same way.
Will the tape still hold in cold weather? I know Alabama doesn't get near as cold at Alaska but I'm curious how the cold affects the bond of the tape. I'm going to try the teepee method Lonnie shows and before I cut up a tarp and buy high dollar tape I'd like to know what to expect.
A good quality tape such as the Gorilla or T-Rex tapes I have used on my tipi and range tents hold up fine in cold weather as long as it is originally applied during warm weather or indoors.

Fantastic Video Lonnie. Those Tarp buddies make it extremely easy to set up a shelter. One question though, With the Plastic barrier over the front, How is the airflow? can you still get air in there with it all closed up like that? Now with me I like it a little on the cool to cold side when I am sleeping........ Otherwise I am more like a stinking furnace myself. here in the winter our heat gets turned to 67 and that is the Highest I want other wise I sweat like a politician trying to lower taxes. I like that shelter and all just would not want to get too hot cause that really isn't good in the winter time.
Galen Long You have a definite point here. These shelters would tend to be more on the warm side of the comfort zone rather than the cooler side. I on the other hand am totaly opposite to you. I just can't sleep well any more unless I am WARM. That condition is a bit of a handycap for the outdoorsy folks in a cold climate. :o) At home we turn our heat down to 56 degrees F at night and we keep our bedroom door closed with no heat. It can get downright cold in the bedroom but nothing that more blankets can't take care of.

thanks Lonnie. An ideal tarp for this purpose is the 10’x10’ hybrid textile tarp from 2gosystems.com. It is very breathable and has the reflective inner surface, much tougher than the emergency blankets. The weight is about 2 lbs and the tie outs are tough.
Seems to be an awesome tarp but wow, EXPENSIVE.
@@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival Definitely expensive, but I’m glad I got it. I have tried camping in it in constant rain and 0 degree Fahrenheit weather, and there is no noticeable condensation. It was worth it for me and it opens up a lot of possibilities.

Erik Lundkvist Thank you. The risk of gas poisoning is very minimal since you will be sealing out the fire smoke and you have an open bottom shelter where air can come in and gasses can go out. Any movement of the shelter skin by outside air or bumping from the inside by tossing and turning etc..... will "pump" out old air and pump in fresh air as well. If smoke from the fire in a calm wind scenario is a problem then a person could build a fire reflector on the opposite side of the fire to encourage the smoke to rise more vertically through the heated zone next to the reflector
Excellent shelter for back packing Lonnie, great product in the Tarp Buddy. Will see if he will ship to Canada. Love to support start-ups like this. What kind of winds do you think your patched together survival blankets will endure?
Canesser The blankets will handle some fairly stiff winds but they are certainly not as strong as the typical tent materials (nylon - polyester). I believe the Gorilla brand tape seams will be stronger than the material itself. In other words, the material will fail before the seams will fail. I have an older space blanket that is quite a bit sturdier than these newer blankets. What a person could do if you wanted the strength of nylon but the reflectiveness of space blankets is to use the newer spray adhesives and apply thin space blankets to the nylon for the best of both worlds. I have not tried this though. It just seems like it should work well.
***** That's some strong tape for sure, Gorilla is the best that I've found personally. Great idea on the space blankets and spray adhesives, worth a try! I don't have any experience with those adhesives, interesting.

Have you ever used the super shelter with the All Night fires (the double long logs with the fire in between on your channel) If so how has that worked out for you?
***** I have never used the super shelter this way but I do plan to do that as well as a new fire design that burns more efficiently. I will be doing a video on this sometime in the future but no idea when I will get to it.
I saw Dave Canterberry use marble sized smooth rocks to do the same thing as those tarp buddy's. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I saw you using rocks or something like a marble or rock to accomplish the same thing in one of your videos.

Will those tarp buddy's work with canvas tarp? Just thinking a fella could eliminate stiching or seams for turning a 16x16 tarp to a teepee with one in center to a tripod or hoist to tree branch then for staking out rather than grommets galore in tarp.
If the canvas is not too stiff then the "tarp Buddy's" should work fine I'm thinking.

You of course have to be aware of where you set your tent up. You do not want to set your tent in an area that is the lowest nearby spot. We here in South Central Alaska seldom have enough rain for that to be a concern. In the old days, people would trench around their shelter to keep rain from entering the shelter. Now days that procedure is frowned upon due to so many people using the same camping areas.
