    One of the best things about living and working abroad is learning about different cultures and different ways of speaking. Singapore has four official languages (you can get away with only knowing English) but the fifth (and unofficial) language is Singlish. It's an English-based creole language that includes words mixed in from Hokkien, Malay, Teochew, Cantonese and Tamil.
    In this video we tell you our top 10 favourite Singlish phrases.

    Regarding the open coffee shop, the female version of the petticoat (we seldom wear this any more, so it refers to any sort of pieces worn to be hidden under the dress) longer than the dress - her Saturday is longer than Sunday. I find this hilarious when I learnt it from my friend, and I am still learning from my friends even though I am a Singaporean. The latest I learnt this year is Commando style, meaning skipping wearing underwear.

    Do you know that the Singapore government is very concerned about the usage of singlish in the sitcom PCK Pte Ltd. The Prime minister at that time was worried that Singaporeans will pick up broken English and it will affect the country’s global competitiveness.

    • @ThatLovellBolandLife
      @ThatLovellBolandLife  2 роки тому +3

      Yes! We saw the Goh Chok Tong speech on UA-cam. It was really interesting to see how a sitcom made it's way into a national day rally speech. We've really enjoyed watching PCK on Netflix over the last few weeks too.

    • @lydiat5819

    Alot of these are a direct translation from the hokkien example "Catch no ball". But sadly these days the new generation speak less of their dialect like hokkien, teo chew,Cantonese. I guess its mostly mandarin, english n singlish that is spoken more. I believe at least our malay n indian still speak their own language which is good. In future our chinese folks may not be able to speak their own dialect except mandarin.
