Telling poor developing countries to adapt the Collective-West post-war ways of development, such as environment-friendly, high labor incomes etc etc, has no difference from telling them to stay still and be Western Neo-colony for eternity. I think the Philippines would do well to dump the USA and focus 100% on cleaning up corruption and getting into the global market/trade. Why they don't have more of an export industry boggles my mind. I was there in the 80's and truthfully not much has improved since then. They need someone with vision and the grit to kickstart their economy.

I wish you could interview former Ambassador Rigoberto Tiglao of the Philippines. He is a regular columnist in the Manila Times and very knowledgeable about the South China Sea issue. He in fact, has written a book about the matter
China's investments in developing countries are often financed with permission to access key resources such as lithium, oil, etc. If the nation's leaders are wise, they make deals that will result in refineries of the raw materials & transfer of the know-how to the host nation. This is finally being learned. It's not enough to build roads, schools & hospitals then take raw materials as payment. Both sides are learning this. The connection must run deeper so that the host country is empowered to develop its own infrastructure & economy.
Africa has the resources the world needs. Africa does not need China, U.S or any other country outside of it. If Africa unites, they can trade between themselves without Asia or Europe
When I think about “special economic zones” I think of zones in which neither labour rights nor environmental protection are applicable. I hope that isn’t true for Africa but I fear that it is.
