Does This Play Duck Hunt on Flat Panel TVs? Should You Buy the Hyperkin Hyper Blaster HD Light Gun

- In this video, we unbox and test out the Hyperkin Hyper Blaster HD, designed to allow you to play Duck Hunt on your modern flat-panel TV.
I've said it many times before but I am not a fan of CRTs. I think they're heavy, they don't look good, and they take up way too much space. One downfall of not using CRTs is the fact that I cannot play light gun games on modern flat-panel televisions. Hyperkin looks to change that with their new Hyper Blaster HD.
The Hyper Blaster HD is actually two components, the Hyper Blaster itself, & a cartridge adapter that you plug your Duck Hunt cartridge into before plugging into your system. The two pieces are designed to work in harmony so that when you pull the trigger on the Hyper Blaster the adapter helps the game register the hit when you make contact with a duck. While it sounds simple in practice, it has been one of the biggest challenges in Retro Gaming.
The Hyper Blaster gun has three different settings on it, high sensitivity, medium sensitivity, low sensitivity. This is to help accommodate for different lighting situations in different rooms. It's also an adjustment that allows you to compensate for distances between yourself and the TV you are playing on. One of the nice things about the blaster is the fact that it has a very long 10-foot cord. This will allow you to get the proper distance away from your television in just about any situation.
While I read through the manual, one thing that didn't sink in immediately was that once you power on your console, you need to tap the reset button to get the game to run. I frustrated myself for about 15 or 20 minutes because I did not pay attention to this detail.
I tested the Hyper Blaster HD on a number of different systems, all with varying levels of success. From Hyperkin's own Retron 2 HD, my HDMI modded NES 101 top loader, my NES front loader with a Blinking Light Win using composite going through a RetroTink 2x, the Hyper Blaster just did not work consistently. I take that back, on some systems it consistently did not work! I adjusted my distance, the sensitivity switch, the lighting in the room and my results varied wildly. I even tried it on GamerzTek 8-BitBoy Handheld NES clone, and that did not work either.
I tested multiple cartridges with Duck Hunt on it. My recently purchased Famicom version (going through a 60-to-72 pin adapter), a Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt Cart, and a Super Mario Bros/World Class Track Meet/Duck Hunt cartridge, I tested them all. The only game that even loaded for me was the traditional 2-in-1 SMB/Duck Hunt cart. Again, having such a finite number of cartridges that this is compatible with is a detriment, not a strength.
Why it RoX:
- only $25
- promises to solve one of the biggest issues in Retro Gaming
- 10 ft long cord on the blaster
What can be improved?
- a consumer product like this just needs to work, and this doesn't
- when it does work, it doesn't miss. Like shooting away from the TV registers a hit
- glitchiness from the cartridge graphically
- the trigger does not have that nice hard click of the original Nintendo zapper
- only compatible with Duck Hunt
- not compatible with the Famicom version of Duck Hunt
Should you buy one?
After so much promise, I can't in good faith recommend the Hyper Blaster HD. it simply takes too much to get it to work at all, let alone get it to work consistently. Off-camera I did test it on smaller TVs, non-4k TVs, budget-friendly TVs, and all of my results echoed what I saw here. I understand that they work to get it compatible with Duck Hunt, but it doesn't even work with all versions of Duck Hunt. The standalone Famicom cartridge does not work. The Super Mario Brothers, world-class track meet, Duck Hunt version of the cartridge does not work. It only works with certain provisions of the Mario Brothers Duck Hunt combo cartridge. With the poor results I encountered and low compatibility, this is a pass from me for now.

LOL why would anyone order this after watching the video? Tremendous fail! A shame too.
Because your mileage may vary.
Why? "I can't in good faith recommend the Hyper Blaster HD" - so why post a link?
@@e5frog For those people who just have to see for themselves
Well I guess, if they're not able to search with Google, these people probably need a link. :D
Fun video, to bad about the camera getting out of focus so much.
Thanks for reviewing this Gary. I won't waste my money until they get it to work correctly. I will stick with the light gun up against the screen. lol
Thanks for checking it out!
This is why I love this channel just so that gary can actually try these products and exactly tell us if they're worth buying and thankfully this product sounds like it needs to go in a dumpster fire. It's back to the drawing board for these guys and hopefully the iteration of this product will be much better than what they initially released.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
Love the video Gary! I like all your videos. I can't understand why your channel isn't growing faster?
In 2 1/2 years we've grown a ton. More would be nice but we've come a long way.
@@RoXolid It will happen. Your videos are just too good and very informative.
It will. 10K is right around the corner!!
I feel the same, definitely a great channel.
Thanks so much for the kind words
Hi Gary, great review! I know we were getting to almost talk about this on Twitter and Bird's stream, but what are your thoughts about a modified ROM (obviously to a game you properly own and dumped yourself) in a use case like this where the game is unplayable with modern equipment?
I trust you in your review and thank you for the heads up.
Thanks for checking it out, and not having me die of dysentary
Some of my favorite light gun games include Battle Clash, Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge, and Yoshi's Safari for SNES, and House of the Dead.
It took a while for me to work out the right delay, the auto-calibration never worked. But once I worked out the right values for my various system (yes it changes!) it works flawlessly. As accurate as a CRT. So for me, it works!
That's awesome!
I've been seeing mixed reviews on this I've seen some were it works fine and others that have the same issues as you. Maybe there are defective units? All I know is I will stick with my SONY Trinitron for Light guns games for now.
I understand that completely.
House of the Dead 2 baby!!!!! LMFAO! Dude when you shot at the camera and killed a duck I about pissed myself :)! Great honest review per usual. Hopefully they get this tech buffed out. Until then...........sticking with the NES Zapper.
You and your Damned CRTs!
@@RoXolid Jajajajajaja. Lol :-)
Don't encourage them!
I would say my favorite light gun game on the home consoles was the paintball game on the NES. My cousins and I used to play it a ton.
Was that Gotcha?
What kind of double cartage did u use there are at lest 2 different boards with different pins. What bothers me is that when u pull the trigger the screen should turn black and flask the target box. It looks like it failing at recognizing the trigger. I’m so disappointed at this I guess I will need to hunt down a CRTV. What has hyperkin’s response been???
im guessing the 8-bit boy doesn't have the two pins on controller port 2 necessary for the light gun to work. If you google nes controller port pin out, you will see that the pin on the bottom right and the one above that are unused, but on controller port 2, the unused pins are used for the light gun to work
THe 8BitBoy doesn't have a controller port per-se. It has a small dongle that plugs into the console and the controllers plug into that. So it could be something tied into that.
Quería comprarlo cuando fue anunciado, que bueno que vi este video antes
Puedo entender eso, estoy bastante decepcionado.
Nice review but sorry it doesn’t work as advertised!
My favourite light gun games as a kid were on the Master System: Rambo III and Middle Defense 3D, which was awesome to use the light gun and 3D glasses at the same time! I just picked up a few other Master System games including Gangster Town and Rescue Mission - looking forward to trying them out!
The words "you had one job" come to mind.
I get that reference
How did you get the Hyperkin HDTV cartridge adapter out of the frontloading console? I'm asking because cartridges get stuck in the frontloading NES easily.
I also have a Blinking Light Win which has a super tight grip. I opened my system, I knew that's what I'd have to do.
@@RoXolid Okay! However, maybe I’ll just use my Classiq N because I’m horrible at modding or repairing consoles, but maybe at some point, I’ll get one of those to put in my toaster NES. Thanks for the reply!
This will likely not work with the Classiq
I didnt expect it to work on the emulator console.. but the gun itself looks like what they did was add the input from the 2nd player controller. Because if you press the a or b on the controller it also kills the duck.
Great review. Now I know not to waste my money. Hyperkin needs to go back to the drawing board and try to make it compatible with all NES light gun games. But most important, make sure it actually works right before releasing it.
My understanding is that the adapter injects a patch into the ROM, which is why it only works with Duck Hunt
Another great review! I agree with the person a couple comments down in that I'll stick with my trusty Commodore 1702 or PVM for light-gun games, for now anyway. As far as my favorite light-gun game, it's a toss up between Battle Clash and Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge, both for the Super NES.
Thanks so much, interesting choices
@@RoXolid They are some of the best games made for the Super Scope. They're basically "Boss Rush" The Game. They have Infinite Continues which make for an enjoyable experience. If you ever have a chance to play them I would highly recommend them.
I'll never own a CRT again so unlikely I'll ever play a super scope game again
@@RoXolid I understand. :)
Found a BenQ monitor: BL702A model, it's a LCD and runs at 15Khz (just like CRTs), despite being a LCD running 15Khz will it run Light Gun games? (Ej: Duck Hunt, SNES Super Scope)?
No idea, sorry. But if I had to make a wager I would say probably would not work.
@@RoXolid Thank you for your reply man! but I have been answered this question few hours; and No it won't work.
This thing requires a very specific cartridge variant of super mario/duck hunt with the right pin layout or it just doesn't work. Most people aren't going to bother to research that. I was looking forward to this and I don't see how they could flub it so badly. I have not seen a video of it working at all.
Understood, but I got this result with ALL variants
@@RoXolid Oof. That's not good. They should recall these and refund people.
You know, Hyperkin could just release an IPS patch for Duck Hunt so it would work on the RetroN 5... In any case, I suspect this would work on my TV since the NESLCDmod modified ROMs work on my EverDrive with the Tomee Zapper. Unless they borked something with the adapter or the new gun. Kind of want to try the new gun though since it has a longer cable.
Yeah, and per my other comment there'd be no point because the RetroN 5 doesn't recognize the Zapper. Maybe they could make a Zapper that does work like a regular controller, but I don't think that's what this is.
Well that was disappointing. Was Trying to find a light gun for my old skool classiq 3 but not wasting my money now. Thanks for saving me cash with your video 👍🏼
Some of those clone consoles like the 8BitBoy probably don't even support the Zapper, because they're only meant for HD TVs. The Zapper has extra pins that aren't used in regular controllers.
Any way to get this to work on Pandoras box. Eww lethal enforcers is my fav
Not to the best of my knowledge
Wild gunman my favorite light gun game
Where you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy
My favorite wagon game is on the Ennius and it’s not goibecause it’s the only way I can game I have and it’s really fun me and my brother playing we played it just today and it’s really fun
Are there some typos there?
I laughed so hard when the gun couldn't miss😆🤣
I'm that good, LOL
Not a fan CRT, unfortunately I grew up playing on CRT TVs for quite some time. I always thought games looked amazing, But I agree, they are huge, heavy, bulky TVs. Great review as aways.
Sounds like someone read the write up in the more information section. And for that I say thank you!
@@RoXolid I always tend to read the write ups, as well as watch the videos. I do enjoy your videos. Long may this channel continue.
Seriously, thank you. I often wonder if people read the write-ups!
If this thing actually worked with all of the light gun games I might just consider getting one of these but based on what I've seen I'm not even sure if it does the clay shooting game
Since it has to patch each game it would take a different adapter cart to make that happen IMO. It does work with the Clay Target game
0:02 did that audio get corrupted?
Not corrupted, just a fade/drop out. I'm still tweaking my new wireless mics, the audio had a couple issues in this one, fewer in the others I am currently working on
I had my hope up but oh well. Hopes are dashed.
Same here
The screen glitching comes from not making stable contact with the pins. Your cartiridges can be clean and it will still do it. If you want to fix it on the front loader you can remove the 72 pin connecter and lift each pin about 1mm or until you see a clean lift. It will give it a strong grip but if done correctly you can litteraly move the cartridge up and down while playing and the game won't intterupt. You can use a metal dental pick, a exacto knife or a 000 flat head to help lift the pins. It makes a world of difference and brings the console back to christmas of '85 like i would say lol. I was really looking forward to be able to play duck hunt again but its not 100% accurate.
I use the Blinking Light Win on my Front Loader. It does such an amazing job to fix the issue. I had tried bending the pins back but that was only a tempoary fix, where the BLW was a permanent fix.
@@RoXolid I hear you! I was considering the blinking light win myself but im just so used to being able to sit the cartridge down on the tray (nostalgia) and my NES doesn't really misbehaves but if it ever goes on sale I might pick one up. I know you are a fellow hobbyist. Have you ever seen or tried the 8bitdo kits the ones you swap out the internals on the nes controller to make it wireless? I wanted to check that out along with the 8bitdo adapter.
@@rubenmejia4881 Yes, I actually installed one for a viewer, you can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/dT8e-qN7x9Q/v-deo.html
I like my hyperkin products to bad that this is not what it should be and i think they should of took the time to make it work for all the light gun games on nes Im glad that i still have my og gun and games to play on my crt tv
I agree. Hyperkin products had been getting better and better in recent months and years and now this just... not good.
Such a shame this doesn't work very well.
For anyone who wants to use light gun games on a flat panel TV then I honestly think modded ROMs on an EverDrive with the Tomee Light Gun is the best bet. It works fantastic
That is what I have heard
I've been of Hyperkin lately because I feel like they have gotten better with their products but I can't defend this. Not sure why they released this. It doesn't work.
We had the same problems! We never could get it to work correctly.
Ugh, I hoped so much it was just me.
My hopes and dreams are crushed lol
Sorry man
You need to stack up 15 to get 1080 hd resolution
Isn’t “Hyper Blaster” the Japanese name of the Konami Justifier?
It is!
did anybody fix this or released some gun that works properly?
It works properly for what it's for and how it was designed. They designed it for one game on one system. And it works for that. The problem is that limits the usability of it overall
I think to be on the safe side I’m gonna get a rct tv at the thrift store
For anal retentive people like me, can you do a "feel" comparison for the plastic between the original and reviews one?
It's plastic. I would say the molded components feel similar to the original but slicker. The only thing feel-wise I had an issue with was the trigger
@@RoXolid sometimes to me a third party/clone maker will use a softer, more flexible plastic that has that "slick" feeling.
Oh, and my Favorite Light gun game was Time Crisis 3 for the arcade.
@@VileMike To quote Dana Carvey from SNL.... WRONG Vile Mike!
The plastics weren't soft, they were rigid. Like my opinions on TOS TV. Which sucks
I remember the App version in the earlier days of iPhone 4GS
Was there? How did you shoot, tapping the screen?
@@RoXolid Yeah you tap which also caused a glitch where in between rounds you tap unlimited times.
Not an iPhone user so good to know
@@RoXolid Unfortunately it has been taken down since then, you can't even redownload it any more.
Gotcha
Does it work on the original nes
It did not work on front or top loader.
RoXolid Productions ok thanks
You're welcome
No wonder this product is notlicensed by nintendo because you can cheat with that lightgun and the reason why it doesn’t work with the retroboy is because it lacks that essential light pin connector or it’s wired differently,
I consider chiller a cool game on the nes but it’s also crued as well.
I have been wanting to play duck hunt but I only have the original unaltered nes. I can’t play it because I don’t own a crt tv. It’s sad…
I get that. If you have a Wii there was a wonderful version on there that used the Wii remote and was really fun
@@RoXolid can it be used on the original wii
What do you mean?
@@RoXolid like for the wii not Wii U
I think it is for both, but it's been some time since I've looked in the WiiU eShop
Well Well Well.Ok here my results I did test it and my impression were mixed. It's is impresive that it duck hunt and I said I got try other verison of Duck Hunt and that's what my excitement goes down hill non of the them work only my duck hunt cart work and my mario and duck hunt glicht out like crazy and yes I did clean but same thing and I Discover was the cartridge adpater senstive as hell so I did clean that as well and it fix it right way and works for most part. by thay point I decided to test other zapper nes games and that's what lost interested on the product WHY? IT ONLY WORKS FOR DUCK HUNT!!!! and I'm like Why? one games there is other that I want it play. Honestly it is a missed opportunity my friend and they could make a great alternative of the nes zapper games, but unfortunately I got to stick my three NES Zapper guns that I have. Othewise great reviews my friend.
Yeah, so much promise and not enough execution on this one :(
The reason it only works with Duck hunt can most likely be tracked to that cartridge the games plug into. That cart is most likely acting like a game genie and modifying code on the fly so to speak. I would assume that at this time it only has the code to modify the Original Duck hunt, but this injection technique only works for certain games. That's also probably why certain systems had the funky garbled text on screen. The injection didn't quite work right on those systems and you got weird artifacting due to something being written to the wrong memory address.
@@LifeWithMatthew ahhh. That makes a lot of senses. That's why I wasn't able to play duck hunt as it should and that's why the other nes zapper games would not work.
I saw a review of this on another channel and it didn't fare too well there either.
I wait to watch other's takes on topics until after mine is posted. I saw MLP's review today as well, his results were similar to mine.
@@RoXolid that's who I was referring to.
@@jeff97ish I watched his before going live with mine (mine was done and all) just to make sure my results weren't an outlier.
7:30 Obviously when you get that boxy/blinky effect you need to blow on the cartridge. Every NES fan knows that. Favorite actual light gun games would be the point blank series. Cheating a bit, Ghost Squad for the Wii.
No. Nononononononononononononononononononono! Never blow it, that's what 1Up Cleaning Carts are for!

Makes since why none of the Retrons will work. While the Retron 5 dumps roms while the others don't. It still doesn't mean, the Retron HD specifically for SNES or NES is using good hardware emulating the system in a hardware level. Nope!!!!
Like the Retron 5, they are still using a raspberry pie type main board, with a mediocre emulation Software.
I'm actually more curious how it would handle on a Analogue NT! Now that thing does emulate on a Hardware level!
Not true, a few of the Retron systems work. Also only the Retron 5, Retron SQ, and Retron 77 dump the carts, the rest play on the cart itself, no different than the Analogue. Now the Analogue uses an FPGA which emulates the original hardware more accurately and the Hyperkin system on a chip but both are hardware solutions
@@RoXolid Actually, I thought the Retron 5 is the only Retron that dumps the rom. I Didn't know the 77, and SQ also dumps them. Interesting to know the Retron HD & SupaRetron HD works better then the Retron 5. After wasting money on that garbage, I never purchased anything from Hyperkin since then.
Anyway, that's interesting what you told me!
1 thing that came to mind I'm curious if it could work on, or start on the Retron 5, IF the Hyperkin Cart's rom is downloaded to a PC, combined what that rom would do if Duck hunt is in. Then make it into a IPS patch for Duck Hunt. And load the IPS patch when launching Duck Hunt on the Retron 5!!! That would be interesting.
Tho It will be 100% unplayable, due to the fact the Retron 5 adds 1-2 frames on some of the NES games! Lol I'm just curious!😁
