  • In today’s episode, we will take a look at the Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen, a Swedish multirole combat aircraft. For more interesting information on this topic, don’t go anywhere and stay tuned.
Manufactured by the Swedish aerospace and defense company Saab AB, JAS 39 Gripen is a light single-engine multirole combat aircraft in service with the Swedish Air Force. The Gripen features a delta wing, which is a wing shaped in the form of a triangle. It also has canard configuration with negative stability design and fly-by-wire flight systems, replacing the conventional manual flight controls with an electronic interface. By 2020, more than 200 Gripens of various models, A to F, have been developed.
First, let’s dig in into the history of the JAS 39 Gripen.
The development of JAS 39 Gripen began when Sweden sought to build new fighters to replace its aging Saab 35 Draken and Saab 37 Viggen in the late 1970s. For a defensive dispersed basing plan in the case of invasion, the Swedish Air Force needed a cheap Mach 2 aircraft with good short-field performance; the concept included 800 meters long by 17 meters wide primitive runways from the Bas 90 system. One goal was to make the plane smaller than the Viggen while maintaining or increasing its payload-range performance. The Saab 38, also known as the B3LA, was proposed as an attack aircraft and trainer, and the A 20, a modification of the Viggen, was proposed as a fighter, attack, and maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, and the Northrop F-20 Tigershark were among the foreign designs which were studied and taken as references.

I think gripen are amazing how it move its manuevering technique its capability and a low maintenace cost per flight
maybe it is depend to the pilots skills and i think it is best in dog fighting
we are small nations archipelagic and it is the choice of our military leaders we knows that there is no better than thier own may be on paper you are the best

yes. Here in Nordic countries, should keep the "maintenance" cost in mind. Armament, refuel, take off/landing must be adapted to our conditions here, and should not call for a 10-20 ppl group to get the plane flying again, if there is real action calling.

Saab Gripen has always been one of my favorite late-4th Gen Fighters.
Its claim to fame has always been simplicity: lightweight, reliable, effective and also inexpensive.
They are known to go toe to toe with any US, EU or Russian fighter of the '90s and early 2000s, excepting the F-22. They can maintain a favorable kill/loss ratio while costing a small fraction of the upfront cost and operating expenses per hour. And require a smaller ground crew, meaning more jets in combat for a given small air force and budget.

Gripen is flown by our beloved Swedish neighbours. Danish Air Force has begun to train with them F-16 vs Gripen, due to the Ukrainian situation. It is formidable, but is let down by its engine thrust. No matter, I am awed by one small country developing one great fighter jet after another. Tunnan, Draken, Viggen, Gripen. We had Draken in Denmark, fighter bombers and recon. Very well loved, Still flying until recently with the UK Test Pilot School and in the US.

My books say that the Gripen can have electrical modification done easily, they can land on a highway and be pushed under a cover of trees, and it doesn't take as much training for the maintenance team as it does for most modern fighters. The canards also give it a short takeoff capability. It also looks cool.

    • @mari.be.86

All is true. It is a modern, small fighter jet that can be hidden in a barn in a village and surprise the enemy due to its small radar reflection. Its electronics are constantly updated and the systems are designed so that even a possible failed update of 1 system will not compromise the entire aircraft.

For the new gripen e/f, this thing is clearly going in the same way as the Dassault Rafale, trying to be this kind of medium light weight fighter. But they're only starting to produce it at the end of 2021. They're kinda late with this new platform, which is by the way not yet validated and fully operational, not yet ready for combats (still under testings for few years to be really ready).

Gripen only cheaper not by much now with the new gripen ng. If you compare the cost and the capacities, the Rafale is offering all better ranges, payload, missiles capacities, and more. So the Rafale is more efficient money cost, with a very similar CPFH. So no, the Rafale got better running cost than girpen.
Rafale's Spectra EW and Suit is one of the best (if not the best, according to many experts and specialists). Rafale is/was the game changer, that even gripen and f35 are copying and going same way.
Coming Rafale F4 will even go further, and put the step upper, removing the few small advantages claimed by the gripen.

Come on, be serious few seconds in your life, and just admit the truth.
For your informations, the gripen ng is late and trying to catch up on what the Rafale already have been offering long time ago.
According to experts, Rafale's Spectra EW and Suit, was the most complete and advanced in the world. This is why you're seeing f35 and gripen ng appearing many years later, to try to build a solution Rafale like.
Gripen NG only offering few things new only, but it's not yet a fully operational and validated aircraft yet. Without to forgot, the Rafale F4 will get back the Rafale ahead of it very quickly.

Every country's needs are different. We Swedes know, from lessons learned all the way back in WWII, that you can't rely on foreign suppliers for aircraft in times of conflict, even if you're not involved in said conflict yourself. So naturally, the best option for Sweden (as for any country) is to develop as much as possible domestically, and only the Gripen fulfills the needs of the Swedish Air Force because it is the only one developed with that goal in mind. That doesn't mean it's better, or worse, than any other aircraft, but it does mean it has the 3 main things Sweden requires from fighter aircraft: cheap operating costs, short takeoff- and landing capabilities (for areas with no airfields in sight) and rapid refuelling enabling maximum efficiency and airtime from fewer aircraft.
There are more technologically advanced aircraft. There are aircraft with better engines, and longer range. But there are no other aircraft built from the ground-up for Swedish needs. That's why it's pointless to argue, as some in these comments do, if it's a good or bad aircraft. It suits Sweden and it will suit some other countries, many others (like the US, UK and France that have power-projection doctrines and overseas possessions to defend) it will not

Viggen: to get the "gg" right try using the english word "wig" (Wig-en) then switch the W to V.
Gripen: Don't be tempted to pronounce the "Grip"-part as the english word. Instead cut the word like this: Gri-pen, then prolong the "i" (Grii). As for tempo it's simliar to the word "Cry" and the second part is pretty much "pen" (as in pencil): Grii-pen

Is it better than the Eurofighter Typhoon? That's a disputed question. Both are more expensive to build and fly than the Gripen, so one has to wonder what advantages they have over it. Personally I would suggest that being able to afford two Gripens instead of a single Rafale and fly both for cheaper would make it well worth the investment. But nobody asked me. The Gripen is clearly a better deal the the F-35 for the same reason, and the fact that it out performs the F-35 in most every way except "stealth." (Most F-35s are not VTOL anyway.)

These are capable, affordable and easily armed with great payload. Also it is designed for the Nordic climate/infrastructure

I duno... I feel like providing a cutting-edge fighter today is just too expensive for JAS to be able to continue to compete really. It's just too large of a financial proposition for JAS being able to continue to really compete without swallowing the whole Swedish military budget just on JAS development.
I'm not an expert but my hunch is that they should probably start to wind down development of JAS... And long-term the Swedish military should probably opt in for something like the F35, too.
JAS is cheaper by Unit... But the F35 is surely really better overall, and factoring in the cost of development of the JAS I'm sure it's cheaper, too.. Even if JAS is cheaper per unit.

I'm sure developing the JAS used to make sense - especially when you want to maintain neutrality.. But I think today, and especially tomorrow, with NATO membership pending - not so much.

Agree gripen E is better and at par with f-16s but f-16V is more advance and has longer range, We from Philippines hope to procure this aircraft but hopes for now are getting low as until now Swedish government didn't approved the offer of our DND (Department of national defense) also the one being offer to paf is the lesser capable gripen c/d.

To pronounce Viggen think about the english word for hair wigs, and add the "en" from end.
Gripen is pronounced like the "gree" with the word for "pen" (pencil)
Draken is Swdish for dragon, and starts with the "dra" from drawbridge and then add the same pronounciation as the name "Ken"
Flygvapnet (Airforce) or directly translated Flying Weapon needs a pauce between flyg and vapnet. Flyg ends with a hard g.
Lars Rådeström was also missing his "å" in the video.
