- Here's a sneak peek at the cast of HERCULES: The Musical in rehearsal!
It’s a terrific twist of fates! The inspired Disney animated film is now a mythical new musical adventure. Hercules is the divinely funny story of an honest-to-Zeus hero on a quest to discover who he is and where he belongs. Is love a possibility too? Oh, Hades, yes! The roof-raising score by Alan Menken and David Zippel features all the hits you love from the film, including the Oscar®-nominated song “Go The Distance,” as well as “Zero to Hero” and “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love),” along with new songs written for the stage. The show features a new book by Tony Award® winner Robert Horn (Tootsie) and Kwame Kwei-Armah (artistic director of London’s Young Vic), and direction by Obie Award-winning Lear deBessonet. Got to see the performance at the paper mill playhouse yesterday and sure did leave totally im awe of everything from the music to the choreo to the set to the costume designs the musical was so well put together and the cast delivered it perfectly i kept having to whisper to my friend DID YOU SEE THAT throughout the play

i went to new york last week for the first time and i am so glad i heard about this production and made the time to get over to jersey and see this show. it was a blast, not to sound cliche but i was legitimately tapping my feet throughout 😅

I am Greek, btw, and I am totally fine with the race of the actors. My only complaint is that greek music could have had a chance to shine through Alan Menken's score but Disney chose to take a different road. Pity...

Isn't this supposed to be based from pre-existing animated movie that is loosely based from a Greek/Roman Mythology? So why is Hercules black? Oh but you're being racist for that comment. Ok sure, but do you think it is ok to have a white or black Actress playing Mulan? Or a white or Asian actress playing Princess Tiana? Who cares if he is black, maybe he got the role because he is an amazing actor and singer. So I guess there's a shortage of white Broadway actors who can sing and act, really? Martin Short is an amazing singer and actor, but can you imagine him playing Hercules or Gaston? Or can you picture Jack Nicholson as Superman or James Bond, since he is one of the greatest actor anyway, right? I guess my point, pre-existing literary or historical characters have some physical feature connected to them, and sometimes talent alone won't be enough to fit a character. Also, did they let women apply for the role of Hercules? If they really want to be progressive, then why are they limiting a character to a particular gender, are they being sexist? His gender is not important to the story or connected to the actor's talent anyway, so maybe we should have a female Hercules next time, or maybe even a male Meg? You think it is really just ok to settle for a race or gender swapped characters to an existing movies or plays, or is it better we ask these entertainment companies to provide new original high quality movies/plays/stories featuring black/POC as main characters? Anyway, Asian here, so not white.
I'm not reading all that but - this is theater. These Disney characters are regularly played by performers that are a different color than what you see in the cartoons. This is how theater is cast and these productions are global.
Also, gender bending is super common on stage. See children's classics " Peter Pan", "Matilda", "Cinderella", "Frozen" - and near every Shakespeare play ever written.
Go back to superhero movies.
@@msanjelica So are you saying if they made a Broadway production of The Princess and the Frog, and they cast a white Princess Tiana and an asian Prince Naveen, you think that will go well with most people and you think that is ok? In small community theaters, I kinda understand it, since the amount of people applying for those roles are limited. But big productions where a lot of actors competing for a role, that is bs. It is like saying every white male actor in Broadway (or off-Broadway) are just below average in talent. It is obviously trying to cause a stir, because these big companies, like Disney, they just want the attention and publicity. And it yields laziness too, since they resort to race-swapping instead of making appropriate new materials for POCs. Answer this, name me any big Disney fairytale/fantasy animated movie (that is not tv movie) that is based on African fairy tale or folklore? Princess and the Frog is from a German fairytale, while Lion King, though based in Africa, it doesn't have people, so race is irrelevant, and it is loosely based from Hamlet, so another European story.
And what if you were white? Doesn’t make this comment any less true.

It's Heracles, not Hercules! According to Greek religion, which you're using, because you're saying “honest-to-Zeus” and not honest-to-Jupiter! Hercules is the Roman equivalent to Heracles.
If its history they can care less.

@@hihi-heart I care that my community cries for representation for itself and not for others. At the end of the day, I couldn't care if an Lea Salonga was in the Color Purple. The fact that not a single Asian/East Asian/Middle Eastern/Etc. has been race swapped for any big Disney product being shipped out is as telling as it will ever be that my culture is being used like cows at a meat packing industry.

EDIT: Wrote this whole thing when them pointing at movies with accurate race casting proves that this IS a race issue, not anything to do with Greeks or Romans since those aren't races. But my points below still stand.
I'm assuming your part of the Greek or Roman community. If so, getting Greek/Roman-only actors is extremely extra, especially in the US. What's the benefit? Black women played the Muses in the original movie, so it makes sense that they'd be at least black women in the stage show. Disney would get a ton of bad press if they didn't. And that casting decision was to make it clear from scene one that this is a retelling of Hercules, not a reinactment, and that they're going to take creative liberties. This is just an extension of that.
Also, your "Lea Salonga in The Color Purple" hypothetical is just weird. That story has plenty to do with the race of the characters. A better example of poor casting regarding race would be all-white productions of Once on This Island or Pacific Overtures, or Asian productions of Hairspray where the black characters are given tan makeup, modern blackface. All stories that have something to do with the race of the characters.
Hell, when Lea Salonga was casted in Once On This Island, a voodoo retelling of The Little Mermaid, they needed to make her character a nurse to explain why she's there. Even then, in the actual story of the show, she only played a god, not a villager, so they didn't need to exclude the "black as night" line, like the all-white productions. The closest thing to your hypothetical turned out great!
