At Jim Henson's Creature Shop in New York, Adam Savage learns how talented fabricators transform the characters from two of Jim Henson's earliest sketches -- the Glow Worm and Business Business -- into two sets of puppets that will appear live on stage in Brian Henson's Puppet Up improv show. It's a balance between recreating some of the mechanisms developed by Jim and his team in the 1960s, and using modern techniques like 3D printing to make the performance pop for a live audience. And we'd say they pulled it off quite beautifully. Do you agree?

I’m glad they’re rebuilding many classic characters for new audiences to enjoy! Even if it’s specifically for Puppet Up, it’s still nice to see these characters again that had an impact on Jim Henson’s legacy.
I agree
I could spend a lifetime inside the Creature Shop
You'd never make it out. You'll disappear for a few days, then suddenly there's a new muppet on the racks that looks suspiciously like you.
@@nujevad28 I think I'm halfway there already!! 🤣
I’d definitely love longer videos like this
Jason is a delight, and the Henson videos are always an absolute joy.
More to come!
I am often amazed at how accessible the Muppet mechs seem. Anyone COULD make a lot of the individual pieces, but it takes imaginative genius to come up with them in the first place. It's truly the sort of imagination you only strengthen through play, which I suspect is why everyone seems so joyful when describing their work in the creature shop. I doubt you can do that kind of work without that kind of attitude towards what you do.
God I love these puppet segments! The way they move, look, etc, just is nostalgia all around.
1:27 Every single time it shows that monster, and it opens its eyes and glares at the little green guy. It cracks me up in that way only Jim Henson's work can.
So glad that you’re doing this series. As a lifelong Henson fan who had childhood dreams of working in the Creature Shop these videos make my heart so happy.
That’s so cool they brought this sketch back, and even rebuilt them with a fresh new look
Oh boy…..working at a company like this must be a dream for us stuck in cubicles ❤ Thanks so much for showing this.
Another great Creature shop / Henson video. Unusual to see Adam having to look up to talk to someone.
The sheer glee in "I got to touch a worm!" kinda made my day.
I know a certain someone at tested is having the time of their life with all this!!!
You KNOW it!
I loved the Muppet show when I was a kid. Jim Henson was a Genius!
There are many time I'm jealos of Adam savage, but never so much as when he gets to go to a muppet workshop. This was a childhood dream of mine, and still is.
Oooooh, the old Glow worm bit.
CLASSIC
The Jim Henson series had got to be a favourite for me
Very cool to see how these "monsters" start out and the development that brings them to the stage.
Awesome.
❤ love these Creature Shop interviews!!
More to come!
I am loving this whole exploration of the Creature shop and puppetry in general 🥰 Awesome!
So glad these guys are the ones behind the FNaF movie's animatronics.
muppetstonight... that show sold me on the idea of storytelling with puppets
So cool! I'd love to visit the creature shop!
I've always loved the little muppet worms. :D
That was my work station at the Henson shop! Happy to see the eyes I put on the lamp are still there. It used to have a nose and teeth too. :D
I am so jealous of Adam!
I would love to visit here
I wish we would see that full glow worm sketch with the fish and the monster instead of clips. Still love the vid
i could see Joel's joy when you said the worm had a lot of personality. even through the blur I can tell
Such an interesting craft.
It's Slimey the Worm!
Nice work
Puppeted HAIL from FINLAND - LOVE U \,,/
Arent these guys the people who worked on Farscape? I loved their work so much.
Yes! Adam interviewed Brian about it, too: shout-tv.com/a-look-back-at-farscape-with-brian-henson-and-rockne-o-bannon-interviewed-by-adam-savage/645aa6d43d7aca0001f36fee
Thank you.
Nice!
Awww Slimey!! 😊🐛
loved it.
Very cool Channel, nice to see that u are happy (:!
More like this!!!!
I would give anything if I can work at the Jim Henson company’s New York workshop!
thx
Honestly, I have never seen a specific industry so overtly focused on the art in tandem with the medium of the performance as a nexus between art, and science, and history with seemingly no one among them where this is a "job" rather than a passion. Where do I sign up?
I'm just glad it turned out to be his nose.
!
Lol
What if piano monster from music hath charms muppet segment would be redesigned?
I want to work there. Plus I want to live there.
Adam while working on the lathe: i hate and despise nylon!
Adam while 3D printing: oh I LOVE nylon!
Guess we will see less lathe videos
I hope the Jim Henson company makes a puppet for the live action Tony Tony Chopper
As much as I love the shop, it's a little sad that I immediately noticed the new Kermit is smaller than he used to be. Given the fact Kermit's original head was shaped for Jim's hands made it feel like honoring that legacy by padding out the other muppeteers' hands.
How many different kinds of puppets in Jim Henson’s inspired silliness are there?
Anyone know how the puppeteer is operating that mouth mechanism on the big puppet?
I make human sized puppets with huge mouths and I use typical hand puppet mouth plate+ strap as the style. My way doesnt work perfectly I wonder if the henson folks are onto something with the "trap door" style mouth
Haha, cool.
The worms remind me of Oscars pet worm Slimey, from Sesame Street
It reminds me of Mau from Castelo Rá Tim Bum but with horns and a long tube nose.
Man I kept cracking up from that sketch \ joke.
How would one get into the industry? He mentioned always needing new people
Prob be willing to take a pay cut, sadly
Hello
That looks exactly like Big V
6:18
Who was watching the guy build behind them the entire time LOL
I was... Cuz it was me 🤣
You know, I once met Jim Henson’s youngest daughter!
Oh, you mean Heather Henson?
rando question: does anyone know a good spot in Los Angeles to get a newspaper front page printed? I'm making a prop and need it to look authentic. I think Mr. Savage mentioned a place in a video in the past but I cant find it! thanks makers!
It was Earl Hays Press!
Is it true that fish eat worms?
You love nylon? Haven't we heard you cursing it many times before? 🙂
Le rêve
W
Why a fish?
Now to compare watch 'Meet The Feebles' by Peter Jackson 😂
2:10 "We're not necessarily putting a modern spin on it." No offense intended, but redoing a bit that's over sixty years old and removing Kermit the Frog from it seems like putting a modern spin on it. 🤔
Disney owns Kermit now.
@@tested . . . which is awfully distressing. What with Disney slowly collecting everything of cultural and entertainment interest, about the only properties they DON'T own are Adam Savage's Tested, Bernie Sanders, the Louvre, and my cat.
And my cat would sell out for two cans of tuna fish.
Have a fine weekend, thanks for the reply/explanation, and best wishes from Vermont (not yet a Disney property) 🍁
I've heard you mention a program in some of your videos that scales images for easier printing. I don't engage in model and replica-making myself, but I thoroughly enjoy watching your creative process. While watching the 'Gods of War Axe' build, I thought to myself, 'Self, you can whip that up tonight... lol.' So, before I embark on coding it, I wanted to check to see if anyone has solved this issue yet. I haven't heard mention of it in a while, so I figured I'd ask. Here's what I envision: a GUI designed to allow users to upload image files and adjust the size. Then, divide the resized image into smaller 8.5 x 11-inch tiles or another print format, with the option to specify overlap percentages like 10%, or 20%, for the layout process. These tiles could then be used to generate printable sheets, allowing users to piece together a larger printed version of the original image. (it would of course be an open-source project for anyone to utilize)
Old school Creature Shop wouldn't bitch about the stop/start nature of production selection or production. 🙄 It's always the pushy people that talk over people by default that get promoted to shop foreman, etc. 🙄😩 FTW.
