  • This video is about Correcting the Indian War Bonnet Light Design Flaw. The demonstration is on a 2014 Indian Vintage. All 2014 models (and most likely all since then as well) have this design flaw.

    As most have said, THANKS for the procedure video.
    I did the repair on my 2014 Chieftain yesterday. The bike has 21,000 miles and has been in rain often, so there was a lot of rust under the light.
    The only point I was uncertain about was where the electrical connection, to the light, was located. I found mine behind the headlight mounting hardware. Simple, once I got to it.
    Thanks again!!

    Yes they have fixed the problem, they went to a stainless steal metal, if you get rust in your warbonnet then contact your dealer Indian will take care of it!

    before sealing the screws I've neutralized the rust with oxalic acid + painted the plate with primer + cold zinc paint and finally added reflective stickers under the LEDs
    no more problems now and more luminosity on bonnet light ...

    I am glad that I found this video as I to have a 2016 Indian Roadmaster and found surface rust so I carried out this task. I will add that I zinc coated the effected plate once I removed the surface rust and replaced the original grummet with a closed one and placed a slit in order to, a, limit the exposure and, b, allow the wiring to pass. Thank you for sharing and please unless you only ride in sunny weather don't wait, get it done.

      I guess that answers my question as to if they fixed this issue with newer models. The answer is a big fat no

    Good work! I would of done it a bit differently ( of course!) After painting the metal base black/rustproof color, I'd then painted the front half white just to add so possible pop to the lighted warbonnet!

    Thanks for the video. My wife bought me a 2019 Indian Springfield for my birthday last March. I was actually looking for ideas on changing the color of the lens when I came across this. I removed the fender before winter storage to wrap the chrome body molding with gold vinyl and took the proactive step of waterproofing the headdress.
    By way of suggestion, strip caulk (dum dum) does a fine job of sealing both the hole in the warbonnet base and the hole in the fender (which are the size they are to allow the connector to pass through).
    I found Gardner Bender 45-308MTUVB cable ties at my local Menards. They have a mounting hole molded on that is just the right size for the weld studs on the inside of the fender. There is just enough resistance that they can be tapped onto the stud using a 1/4" drive 7/32" socket, and they are very inexpensive.

    You can just twist the ties holding the cable under the fender, they'll pop right off.

  • @jaysihota1
    @jaysihota1 3 роки тому

    Reconnecting the cable in the fender with cable ties rather than the proper clips leaves the cable very close to the disk as it runs on top of the fixing rather than the side

    Why fix it when they can charge you more to fix it for you? If you have a new one seal it before it becomes a problem. Very good video ... thanks!

  • @9021DX

    You're assuming that the water is getting in from underneath the fender, but what if it's actually coming in from the glass lens or around the gasket on top of the fender and just has nowhere to go? Sealing up the bottom might actually make things worse.

    • @ride-wrench-repeat
      @ride-wrench-repeat  7 років тому

      The "lens" is not glass, but a single large piece of formed plastic as shown in the video. The gasket is excellent at the light housing and should be good if mounted correctly at the fender. The other data point is this bike has been in the rain multiple times since the fix and has no rust problems now.

    Any wild ideas how to make it brighter? I have the Springfield 2017 and for me it's a bad ass, but I'd like the War Bonnet light to be brighter..Thanks, great video..

    • @ride-wrench-repeat
      @ride-wrench-repeat  7 років тому

      Sorry Mike, I've not tried anything as yet. The big factor is that large piece of plastic that makes the Indian Head--you get a lot of light loss as it's only intended to be a decorative light. the other issue is the form factor of the light assembly. It's good in that it's solid and encased so that vibration is not a problem. Putting in another lighting system behind the Indian Head would have to account for the vibration. As you saw, it's not a small job to get in there--I'd hate to have to do it to replace a broken/burnt light. Holler if you come up with something!

    I don't understand the part about using the cable ties. I can't tell what he is cutting off and how they re-attach.

    • @ride-wrench-repeat
      @ride-wrench-repeat  7 років тому

      Paul - the OEM tie wrap fits over the bolt as shown. It has a cross-member that can be used with a new tie wrap to hold the power feed to the War Bonnet Light. The other option is to buy four (4) new OEM parts.

  • @jimrhodes3487
    @jimrhodes3487 7 років тому

    Thanks! I just bought a 16 Springfield. I wonder if being proactive by removing the fender and add sealant to the grommet and bolts I can avoid the rust thing?

    • @ride-wrench-repeat
      @ride-wrench-repeat  7 років тому +1

      It should. If it's brand new with no/few miles, then you could just put sealant around the three points shown in the video. Best of luck!

    Polaris didn't think of that because they are almost as bad as Harley ... they don't give a shit about you, just taking your money. Great job fixing THEIR screw-up that you shouldn't have to do in the first place. Manufacturers are such a joke these days, just slam the bikes together with the cheapest labor/parts you can find and take the owner's money ... nobody cares about quality anymore ... it's a crying shame you spend thousands for something new and have to fix somebody else's screw-ups. I hope someone from Polaris watched this and sees first-hand their shotty work, but I'm betting they already know all about it and don't care.
