  • Hi, my name is Katie, known as myhitlife.
    Thank you again for your support on my A Day in the Life of a SAP Consultant vlog! I truly appreciate it. Following on from one of the questions asked, "After being told by people SAP is dying. What is your opinion? Also, what is a career in SAP a good long term choice? In this vlog, I answer those questions. It all depends as well your reasons for getting into SAP and who are you talking to as well. SAP is certainly not dying! If anything, it's growing more than ever at a rapid pace, but if requires Consultants more than ever now to update their skill sets. Contracts daily rates are less because there are a lot more Consultants in the market. However, if you stay ahead of the curve with the latest S/4 HANA projects on your CV you will still maintain an awesome daily rate. Short answer - SAP is not dying. Yes, it is, but you have to be adaptable with the technology!
    Please note I do not work for SAP. I am a SAP Consultant for a Consultancy firm which implements SAP technology. I thought I would simply share this helpful information for those of you not within the SAP space looking for some answers. Again all questions are welcomed.

    Interesting video and I agree - SAP is evolving and their roadmap is impressive for the future. I have worked as an application support person (super-user) on SAP BPC and some ECC6 modules. I am currently working on an S/4 HANA implementation (SD,FI,CO & embedded BPC) as an analyst inhouse. I was wondering if you have any advice for me - my background is mainly IT and I do struggle at times with the accountancy discussions. Do you think I should study to become an accountant or focus on become SAP-certified instead? Do you come across consultants who are not accountants? I didn't go to university and I just worked since I left school in a range of role but the last 5 years focusing mainly on IT support and now implementation for SAP S4.

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому

      First of all many people don't understand or want to understand the accountancy discussions in SAP or within a business lol. Accounting is for people who like accounting. So only study accounting if that's what you enjoy! In SAP if you wanted to go into the accounting space you'd look at FI or CO module but again you do not need to be an accountant to do that. As you mentioned above other SAP module SD and there's many many more like QM, MM, PP and so on. So focus on what you enjoy and that would lead you down the correct path. Being a support user makes your experience specific to your company. If you wanted to go into accountancy then look for a position in accountancy. If you wanted to look to go into SAP you could potentially join as an experienced higher but it would be tough or alternatively join an SAP program. But in general you don't need a SAP certification to get a job in the SAP space. Project experience matters more. So try to decide which area and path you enjoy. I hope this helps.

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  2 роки тому

      Hey! 1) It is not. 2) Really depends on the industry tbh, but probably still S/4 HANA on premise with private cloud option. This is a high level guess I did leave the industry last year and knowledge can get out of date. Solution depends on the industry tho :) and google is always your friend. I hope it helps!

I was wondering if you would have time in one of your vlogs to give your opinion on the best way to progress ones career at SAP? Hi, what's a YPP if you don't mind me asking? Honestly just be open minded, ready to tackle any task and don't be afraid to go to google for answers. Always listen and make sure when someone gives you an answer that you note it down. As with SAP the tasks you do can be repetitive so it's always good to have the notes there ready. Consider creating a tracker for transaction codes and FIORI apps ready. Hope it helps :). You'll smash it! Learn as much as you can from your senior members!

    Thanks for such an amazing video! I'm a fresh graduate who got an offer for a position as an Inhouse SAP Consultant FI in an energy company. For me, it's a completely new world of expertise and I'm trying to weigh all possible cons and pros of this career path before signing my contract.... Not such a long time ago, I planned to start my professional career as a Junior Accountant as I studied Accounting&Finance and really love working with numbers, but then this SAP Consultant opportunity popped up and now I'm thinking whether this is the right thing to do. I wonder what are the possibilities in the future if I ever want to exit the Consultancy job in SAP Finance... is it possible to come back to either accounting or finance-related job (e.g. accountant, financial controller, financial analyst). Apologies if the question is too vague (I know just a little bit about SAP Consultancy:( I would really appreciate your professional advice on this!:)

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому +3

      It’s a great question! Hopefully one I can actually really help you with because when I first started my career it was in the finance team. In typical big SAP Consultancy companies that would pay for your accounting qualification like ACA etc as well as the SAP Certification. SAP is just the system built to replicate the business processes. Therefore, to be a great SAP FI Consultant needs both! Plus SAP FI Consultants you’d get paid a lot more longer term than an accountant. When you are a SAP FI Consultant you get to build the system so your theory really comes into play. However, as this is an in-house position position I’m not sure whether that means you’ll be on the support team and the system have been already built. Ask them would they consider getting you ACA certified as well. If not, perhaps apply to a bigger SAP Consultancy company or alternatively take the position for a year + which would give you work experience putting you ahead of the other graduates. Everything is moving to digital so this would make you a double threat accountant long term anyways. I hope my answer helps. For example, my friend and I both worked on a SAP project together. She went into an accounting role and I went into a FICA SAP Functional role. I earned £10,000+ over her from the start. Not that money is everything mind, but SAP world fits perfectly for myself. I would checkout my other videos however on my SAP Vlog playlist like a day in the life of a SAP Functional Consultant, because there is a travel element of the job with some companies. But overall, if it’s just for one year I would recommend it. Not getting a job as an accountant and falling into the SAP space was the best thing that ever happened to myself. I appreciate it’s not the same for others, but you would be able to move across nicely as most big companies would have SAP systems. Do some research for yourself mind as we are all different people and honestly I realised accountancy bores me. I was just doing it because it was a “good” job.

      @@myhitlife thank you so much for such a detailed answer! the system has been already built, so it's more support, plus a bit of new implementation nature of work. Hi, I am not an expert within the Covid situation. Well no one can be right now. However, I would say it all depends on the SAP Consultancy firm and the clients they have. Many companies may have dropped, but some have rised. However, when a project starts its very important for the design/ initial stages for Consultants to go on site and view the customers business. Therefore, the SAP consultancy industry has been impacted. However, there is support work which can be gained. SAP FICO Consultants will always be in demand as every company needs finance. So when lockdown improves and companies recover then probably clients may look at a SAP projects and usually finance would always be in the scope. When this happens though I cannot say. Maybe worth checking on LinkedIn and google for SAP FICO Consultants opportunities. If you are willing to travel there maybe a demand now

    Thanks for the vlog. I was a accountant, currently in a SAP Basis role, I am planning to quit at the 1 year mark, in order to pursuit a Masters in SAP ERP. I feel lost in the IT job market, cause I am an accountant for 5 year. Should I stick with Basis and delay my studies or transition to Functional after my studies?

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому

      ch I would recommend avoiding doing a master in ERP. I’m assuming the point on the masters in ERP is to help you in the sap industry? As you was an accountant I would naturally assume for you to go into a finance functional role either FI or CO depending what accountancy you did. Do you like basis?
      I wouldn’t recommend studying SAP at uni. As ERP is very old of date. SAP is on S/4 HANA now and it’s constantly changing. Doing a sap certification would benefit you more.
      Perhaps if you want to email me on katie@myhitlife.co.uk

      Hi, sorry my friend I've never worked in that area to compare wages. I can share SAP guidelines wages with you and then you will have to compare. Please note wages vary massively in SAP as it depends on what the Consultant asks for. SAP Graduates - £25,000 - £33-000, Functional Consultant - £35,000 - £60,000
      Lead Consultant - £60,000 - £100,000
      There are numerous other positions in SAP, but that's just an estimate. Obviously it all depends on your experience too hence the difference pay grade brackets etc. You can increase your salary by company hopping after you've gained good project experience and if you are an expert in one field. The next roles to consider would be Solution Architect and Project Manager. Hope the above helps.

I would have to find an area I enjoy and stay there for a min of 3 years before going into contracting. As long as the modules you are working in all interlink, but on your next project it would be more beneficial if you specialize in one area. Also, wouldn't harm to get a SAP certification if your company is willing to pay for it. When going contracting you need more project life cycles under your belt as well. I hope it helps.

      The ones you like! How you would find this out is if you watch a business which business functions interest you. SAP is no chicken and egg scenario. SAP was created to support business processes which already exist. Also, joining a Graduate Program as well you could get an opportunity to work in multiple areas and then settle down.

    How would you encourage a junior SAP consultant thatvis currently on bench?

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  3 роки тому

      Bench is extremely tough I know. If you haven't yet done your certification I would recommend that. Cloud certifications needs to be done every 4 months so it's a good idea to get ahead of the race. Reach out to people and ask if they have anything you can work on. Try to do some internal work which would help your promotion case. But once you've done all that try and enjoy yourself a little too. The bench can be tough especially through covid, but if you can try to change your work environment. Hope it helps

You just need to select which module you like and apply for those relevant job roles. Or if you feel you don't have enough experience then apply for a SAP Graduate scheme. I wouldn't say you would need any training specifically.

    Which sap module is in high demand? And do you think sap is still in demand
    People said sap is getting saturated

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому +1

      I've created a vlog for the future of SAP. In general up-skilling yourself with the latest tech keeps you ahead of the game. So going on full cloud implementations with the activate framework. On module which is in high demand is Embedded Warehouse Management. I personally have never done contracting so I don't know first hand. I've heard from other contractors, "That the market isn't what is used to be". In those times they generally join a SAP Consultancy company and go on the latest projects then back into the contracting market. Joining SAP instead of for example a typical Accountancy role is still a lot more beneficial. But it's best to do what you love instead of chasing money, because there will be times in your career you feel you won't get the appreciation you deserve. SAP project are still heavily in demand as obviously the support packages for ERP only last x amount of time and therefore, some companies may want to upgrade. I hope this helps.

    You said in a video that learning javascript was better, now you say sap is better, I got confused. I'm starting now in the programming area and a friend said working with abap is worth it. But I don't know if I follow the path of SAP ABAP or focus on other languages that focus more on cloud, which is the future. What would you do if you were starting?

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому +1

      Luiz Eduardo hey! So SAP is mainly made up of two programming languages. ABAP (backend & front end within the FIORI dashboard) and Java script (FIORI dashboard front end). In general as a developer you will be learning both these languages. Depending on the SAP landscape I.e. on premise (backend & FIORI) or multiple tenant cloud (all within FIORI)
      When joining a consultancy company depending on the size (the larger companies you can probably get away with just having the one language) you will usually pick up either or both languages. The way SAP is going in the future all within the cloud i.e. FIORI focused I would recommend java script. There will still be some ABAP development within FIORI, but it’s a lot more constrained. So only standard code and no real customized developments. I’m not a developer myself, but speaking to my developer colleagues this is the advice they have provided me when I’ve looked at picking up a programming language. Also, from my project experience I would have to agree with them.
      I hope it helps! I have a SAP Vlog playlist on my channel as well which other developer related vlogs. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    • @luiznaruto1
      @luiznaruto1 4 роки тому +1

      @@myhitlife So is javascript used in SAP? I thought it was just ABAP.

      Thanks for listening :)

    • @myhitlife
      @myhitlife  4 роки тому

      Luiz Eduardo yes JavaScript is used within the SAP FIORI dashboard. The FIORI dashboard is given to the end users. That’s the underlying program language. You should look into getting a graduate job with a SAP Consultancy company as a developer. They will then give you the relevant training & project experience you need. The FIORI dashboard has a little bit of ABAP, but a minimum amount.
      Most, if not all SAP S/4 HANA solutions will have a FIORI dashboard.

Such as SAP ERP, SAP HANA and SAP S/4 HANA (S/4 HANA being the latest and within that you’d have different versions. So you’d want to be trained in the latest version so your skills are up to date). If you have a BSc degree then DO NOT GET SAP CERTIFIED YOURSELF. Find a SAP Graduate program by a SAP Consultancy and they will pay for you to learn SAP FICO and pay for your certification. You will either do the FI or the CO certification mainly. Yes, there is a future in finance as at some point SAP ERP projects will need to be upgraded to SAP S/4 HANA projects

      Depending how much experience you have (if 1 year less) I would recommend applying for a graduate/ analyst scheme at one of the SAP Consultancy companies. As day in and day out we learn the vital soft skills of communication through presentation & documentations and collaborative working". You could become a Business Analyst, Project Management, Pre-Sales, Account Manager and Data Analysis.
      For example, even with myself I've transferred my SAP Consultant skills into building a personal brand on social media. This have made me such a a confident communicator via video. So potentially going into the Social Media space.

      @myhitlife  4 роки тому

      a SAP graduate program is for graduates (BSc) fresh to SAP to get a job. SAP Consultancy companies will have these schemes. Which requires no experience just a degree. It is there they will guide you into which area and job within SAP would be suited to yourself. They will pay for your certification so you don't have to. They will get you experience. A certification means nothing without experience anyways tbh. EWM within the UK is in high demand, but this demand may change. It is better to go for an area you enjoy instead of just picking the highest in demand now. Before you can become a contractor you will need project experience. You couldn't get certified in EWM and get a job contracting.
      For example years ago when I initially came into SAP I was put into the FICO team as I had an Economics degree it made sense for me to be there. I hated FI and decided to go more into the Supply Chain area. It's better to like your job than chase money. There are always jobs but you have to be willing to move. FICO is general will be in demand, because every company usually needs it. Especially soon companies may need to upgrade from ERP to S/4 HANA and therefore, FICO will be in demand again.
      Just pick an area you love, because when you love it you will be one of the best Consultants & you will always be able to find a job. Plus say you went for an area you didn't like and you worked your butt off. Then you didn't get that promotion at work or you were having troubles at work you'd think what is the point of this all?
