The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England Virtual Opening | Met Exhibitions

- England, under the volatile Tudor dynasty, was a thriving home for the arts. An international community of artists and merchants, many of them religious refugees, navigated the high-stakes demands of royal patrons, including England’s first two reigning queens. Against the backdrop of shifting political relationships with mainland Europe, Tudor artistic patronage legitimized, promoted, and stabilized a series of tumultuous reigns, from Henry VII’s seizure of the throne in 1485 to the death of his granddaughter Elizabeth I in 1603. The Tudor courts were truly cosmopolitan, boasting the work of Florentine sculptors, German painters, Flemish weavers, and Europe’s best armorers, goldsmiths, and printers, while also contributing to the emergence of a distinctly English style.
Join Elizabeth Cleland, Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and Adam Eaker, Associate Curator in the Department of European Paintings, to explore The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England, which traces the transformation of the arts in Tudor England through more than 100 objects-including iconic portraits, spectacular tapestries, manuscripts, sculpture, and armor-from both The Met collection and international lenders.

As a Brit, I grew up seeing many of those iconic paintings of Tudor royals reproduced in sets of encyclopedias, and have seen a couple of them in real life since. To see them all together will be a remarkable experience for anyone lucky enough to be able to visit this exhibition. What a coup by the Met!
GET TO NEW YORK TO SEE THIS EXHIBIT! It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. The armor! The Holbeins! The tapestries! The illuminated manuscripts! The clothing! The jewels! Even a baby's rattle and other everyday paraphernalia. The Tudors really come alive.
You say "The Tudors really come alive". Well, many of us verified DNA Tudors have always been alive! : )
oh my, all the Holbeins 😍Wish I could be there, what an amazing exhibition. Thank you for the walk around, giving those that can't visit a sneak peek.
I love seeing Elizabeth visibly excited whilst explaining the intricacies of the Tudor artwork…
I seen this exhibition in person. It is amazing! They did an incredible job of placing the artworks in the correct places. Everything compliments each other so well.
I had the honor of attending this exhibit last Tuesday. It was indeed magnificent. The filter of "Inventing a Dynasty" was an excellent way to focus the curation of the objects and that theme was consistent throughout the galleries. I was a better-informed art patron when I reluctantly left the museum.
Oh I wish I could travel to the Met and spend an entire day at this exhibit. I thank you for sharing this video so I could at least experience a glimpse! Such history, craftsmanship and beauty!
"Suddenly" the King turned on Wolsey? Oh, come on. Even the most casual history buff knows that Henry VIII dumped Wolsey *because Wolsey couldn't get the Pope to annul his first marriage.* If Wolsey had pulled that off, he would have stayed in power.
Time for a re read of Hilary Mantel's trilogy.
I was just thinking that myself. That was poorly worded by that MET curator.

it's completely insane how they were able to draw and paint like this back then, i can't fathom having the ability to create this level of artwork, but 400, 500, 600 years ago!? it's incomprehensible. i saw this in person in new york last year
The amount of detail is mesmerizing.
To witness a Holbein in person is a treasure in itself. The man was a genius and it’s just so sad he died so young and that artists back then were treated like laborers on the royal payroll .
Thank you so much, Met Museum, for bringing this wonderful show to us who do not live near New York! Truly magnificent cinematography! Thanks, again!!!!
Yeah, the Tudor era is definitely worthy of a digital exhibit. 👍🏻 Long overdue
This was a fantastic overview of the exhibition.
Update: Oh my God, if you have any interest in the Tudors, you need to see this exhibit. There was not a lot of focus on Henry VIII's wives, but if you're interested in the monarchs, the themes of propaganda and myth creation highlighted in this video were very well articulated in the exhibit and those paintings are stunning in person. No photo could capture how luminous the pearls looked and the grandeur of those huge portraits. The plaques finally provided useful insight into the pieces being displayed. This was one of the best exhibits at the Met in years.
What an absolute privilege to get a tour of this opening! This is one of the most phenomenal exhibits I will ever miss seeing in person! But your guided, informative tour almost makes up for not being able to go to NYC! 😁
Thank you kindly for this video. It is a monumental gift from you to the rest of us who cannot join you in person. Merci beaucoup.
Spectacular in every way. Many thanks.
Hello how are you doing?
Beautiful exhibition and how nice to exhibit all art-works. I am very happy to see it UA-cam!
Thank you for offering a free virtual tour and for some focus on the Siena Portrait of Elizabeth I, a painting that contains so much symbolism
What a spectacular exhibition! And what an effort to bring it all together . Well done, from New Zealand
Wow!! I would love to see this exhibition...thanks for walking us through this spectacular collection.
Wow! We have got to get to New York for this once in a lifetime opportunity!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Wow! I would so love to see this exhibition. What an incredible collection.
What a pity this show doesn't travel. Many masterworks. Worth flying to New York for.
It’s in Cleveland right now and then on to San Francisco.
Amazing and tumultuous time in England! Great clothes, architecture, cultural aspirations.
Exceptional. Thank you for all the time and effort that has been invested into this project.
This was enlightening and uplifting - an amazing exhibit. Thank you.
This was a wonderful exhibit and I marveled while looking at the artifacts in detail. I am looking at it again on the website and maybe will go again before it closes.
Thank you for sharing this.
Wonderful format and excellent video footage. Please continue producing this amazing high caliber content this will be added to my classroom UA-cam account to share with my college students!
Amazing!
I look forward to visiting the exhibit this weekend. Glad that I got to see this video first so I have a better understanding of what I am looking at and some of the history behind it.
Great exhibition. Thanks MET to share virtual amazing treasures.
Thank you for sharing the video! Unforgettable gifted and skillful people who produced these amazing pieces of art!👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Such an amazing Legacy. Such a beautiful display of beauty, elegance and history. All under one roof. I am speechless at some of the detailing in these incredible pieces.
Wonderful! Exhilarating! Inspiring! Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful . Thanks!!!
The Met - if only I were able to visit that wonderful institution. So many great exhibits.
Fabulous to see this. Thank you so much.
I've always loved museums, galleries and any historical displays in my country. But would have loved to visit others around the world. I'm glad I get to do it through the internet and don't have to spend a fortune trying to get there physically. I love all the presentations. The pieces displayed are worth dying for.
Thank you. Educational and exquisite
Incredible exhibit. So happy I got to go and experience it. Wow 🤩
BREATH TAKING SPLENDOUR!!!!!!.......MORE IS ESSENTIALLY '''MORE''' IN THIS CASE. THE INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION OF ARTISANS SHOWS HOW "ART'' CAN BRING CULTURES TOGETHER NOT...GUNS.
Thank you, the portrait of the infant Edward VI is so poignant.
Thanks so much for sharing .I'm planning a trip to NYC in the spring and I'll be spending a day at the MET
Thanks 😊 I really appreciate it 🙏 😊
Absolutely stunning. Thank you for the amazing and entertaining tour ,how lucky are we to get to see this ancient and rare artwork?
Thanks for this great insight into the exhibits! 🤩
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Astonishing
Can't wait to visit this over thanksgiving break!
Splendid. Thank you
5:50 "It's absolutely stupendous to look at." What a beautiful sentence.
Wonder exhibit. Wonderful museum.
Very beautifully done.
Good to be here.
Thank you so much
Beautifully Beautiful
Brilliant exhibition
Fascinating ❤
Thanks
Sensational.
Très intéressant and beautiful
well done
I went twice..it was so crowded but so impressive...
Another price tag you can add on apparently Henry spent 4000 Pounds in spices at The Field of the Cloth of Gold while entertaining Francis.
And Hans Holbein the Younger started his career out as a religious painter til The Reformation came along. And he also did the painted portrait of Thomas Cromwell
Magnificent! Who would I contact to find-out more about the frame surrounding the Henry portrait at the 8:00 mark? I am an art historian who is constantly researching and stressing the importance of frames. Does anyone know if Holbein made this frame or if it was commissioned?
Very nice
Finally! Someone calling Mary I by her proper regnal name and NOT Mary Tudor. THANK YOU, MET!
Ugh! I missed it!
I wish they would have lightly mentioned what happened to the other 8 tapestries. It piqued my curiosity.
What is the background music here?
7:28 this is an inexusable mistake: the material used by Holbein is Lapis Lazuli, not Ultramarine.
The angels wings? Is there a drawing that shows them? And what are the holding? Weapons?
So much can be gleaned from the past, yet this is an exact replicant representing todays' need to reach
❤❤❤
The tapestry has a holographic effect, is that to do with the camera ir is it intentional in the real tapesy?
Doesn't the portcullis reference Henry VII's Beaufort family on the cope and numerous other items?
이것만큼 한국인도 개성있고 이쁨..꿈속이나. 꿈밖이나..굉장히 공부도 많이하고 교감들도 많이해서 굉장히 존재자체가 다 작품들임..원래는 더 이뻤겠지만..
I wish I could visit 😢❤️🩹
아무리 이뻐도 이쁨을 즐길수없는 피곤함이 문제임. 그러나 학습하던 습관이 남아서..아 이쁘다. 사랑스럽다..와..개성있다..
It doesn't look like the great Anthonis Mor portrait of Mary Tudor is included
would be that exhibition also in Europe ?
It looks like quite a few portraits are from the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Treasure hunting for the Tudor Rose....
What do royals pay for now? What great art do they collect today?
Hello how are you doing?
Well, I get the reasons, but I dislike the choice of gray for the background of this exhibition. It is representative of neither the time nor the place,
5:08 "Everything was over the top. More was definitely more!" I would disagree. If you were claiming that Baroque or Rococo art was OTT I would agree. The art of the Renaissance, however, whether in Italy or England, was beautiful, balanced, harmonious and exquisite. Nothing OTT about it. Perhaps this curator has no sense of the utter beauty and the glorious workmanship of the period, based on Roman and Greek precedents.
I personally couldn't pass 3:00 a perfect exemple of contemporary academia.
The tragedy of historic British treasures lost to the United States
The grey is alienating. I assume they wanted to emphasize the pieces but in this case it seems to oppress them.
They organise the show because King Charles decided to use the Tudor crown in his royal cypher

Why not go over the top…that’s what it was…go big or go Home….ha.
Sorry, but next time get a professional voice actor.
It looks like a good part of the portraits are from the National Portrait Gallery in London .
