    What always gets me is that if Henry had died when he was 34, history would have given us a completely different image of him. Up until that point he was seen as pretty much the ideal late medieval King- he was handsome, intelligent, athletic, knowledgeable and pious. He'd had military successes against France and Scotland, had demonstrated the wealth and power of England at the Field of the Cloth of Gold and his courting of his brother's bereaved widow was undeniably romantic. He'd ruled for 16 or 17 years like that, then he had some kind of mid-life crisis and rapidly turned into a bloodthirsty and paranoid tyrant who butchered his wives and advisors on a whim and plunged England into religious turmoil. Looking forward to part 2.

      Some people think he had a brain injury when he fell at the joust. The one that Anne had a miscarriage after the fall due to the shock of her uncle telling her that the king was dead.

      Henry did not "butcher" his wives nor Sir Thomas Moore. Boleyn and Howard were beheaded for treason. Moore was given a gentler execution than the conviction warranted. Henry divorced Aragon and annulled Cleves. Seymour died from childbirth complications. Parr survived Henry's death and married someone else. Adultery in a British queen is indeed treason. Adultery throws the legitimacy of any children into doubt which in turn precipitates a bloody struggle for power upon the monarch's demise. Nobody questions Howard's dalliance with Culpepper. We cannot know for certain about Boleyn's innocence. Her rank was in serious jeopardy for want of producing a male heir. I think she was desperate enough to attempt impregnation by some other man. A son is the only thing that could have saved her life. A male heir was Henry's priority and he was running out of time. The only wronged woman in Henry's life was Catherine of Aragon. She had been an exemplary queen.

    As you said-and given their circumstances-the wonder and excitement is in the paintings. Not the admiration or revulsion of the various historical subjects living at a very brutal time. Thank you for your informative and entertaining videos.

    The incredible thing is that King Richard was found by writer/producer and Richardian Philippa Langley.
    His body was found within the site of the former Grey Friars Priory in Leicester in 2012.
    There is a documentary about it by BBC.
    And he had extreme Scoliosis.

After all, they all seem to be related to any English speaking nobility in any documentary. Oddly they are never related to any non English speaking European nobility! Even though their English ancestors were! ROFL

    Why is there never any discussion over Henry's inability to tell if a woman he slept with had been a virgin or not? This was most likely a question in his marriage with Katherine Howard also. All that conversation regarding the subject and Henry has no opinion to offer one way or the other. It is understandable that he would not care to claim ignorance on the subject, and, tactfully, it appears no one asked him to join in on the discussion.

    This is avery Tudors Lite, but I understand why. You could have mentioned the Real reason why Cromwell and Anne fell out, which was because Anne wanted the riches from the dissolution used for the people and Cromwell wanted it for his King, cronies and of course himself. Very RW versus Left!

      Alas, the video (which is already 2 parts) could have easily spiralled into 3+ hours! I did A LOT of editing for time. My initial plan was to breeze through and talk about each person for 30 seconds but I quickly realised I just couldn’t do it. 😂 Thanks for watching!

      @@hogwashmcturnip8930 sorry, I’m not sure you understood the theme of the video. I’m visiting every single painting in the Tudor Gallery - so it’s not really the tourist rut, it’s literally the entire contents of the room. ;)

    • @hogwashmcturnip8930
      @hogwashmcturnip8930 Рік тому

      @@TheMuseumGuide So, the Tourist Rut. You did not say anything that isn't known to any Tudor dork, including the Americans. We All Know the paintings, we all know the guide book history. And the endless plays, the laughable books and the American tv versions. The only thing you came up with that I had had a not heard before was the pearls of Anne's necklace being incorporated into Liz 1's crown A big problem there is that the crown Liz 2 wore was made for Charles 2nd in 1661. Because the Roundheads melted down the originals. And it doesn't have pearls.
      Maybe you could have talked more about the paintings themselves? Who made them, and the significance.? Thomas More was a fruitloop Zealot who debatably condemned 100s to horrible fates, but as usual that got glossed over.
      If you are going to do this, please try and do something that is Fact and different. Otherwise there is not much point is there?

    • @TheMuseumGuide
      @TheMuseumGuide  Рік тому +5

      This wasn’t for Tudor dorks, though. It is a museum walkthrough for people travelling vicariously or planning their own trip to the NPG.
      You’re also confusing the Imperial State Crown (269 pearls) with St Edward’s Crown. And one of the first things I mentioned about More was his responsibility for the deaths of “heretics,” while featuring an illustration of the Tyburn Tree. 🤦🏻‍♀️
      I’d personally prefer if you just didn’t watch my channel. You really need to start your own. Cheers!
