Death: “… On the other hand, I just remembered I had some urgent business back home. Yes, too many funny Boxer videos in my backlog that still need to be watched…”

I was gifted a boxer by my grandparents for my tenth birthday, as my first "real" pet. We named her Tasha after Boris & Natasha, as the (admittedly terrible) live-action Rocky & Bullwinkle movie had recently released. She was the love of my life. She went through puberty and all its ups and downs with me; she went through the death of the same grandparents who gave her to me, with me; she survived high school with me, and came with me when I moved out of my hometown and went to college; she served as the ring-bearer in my wedding. She was very smart, and seemingly convinced she was human...I once caught her sitting on a chair on my parents' pool deck, not on her haunches like a normal dog, but flat on her butt, with one front leg propped up on the armrest.
She had problems with small, cancerous masses several times in her life, the earliest being when she was around six. But the four or five of those she had were all just under her skin and very easily removed. Cancer was what took her in the end anyway, though...Whether is was metastatic from one of her skin lesions, or a new cancer all its own, I will never know, but one day she just collapsed. The next day, the vet did exploratory surgery and discovered a mass the size of a baseball latched to her spine. There was nothing they could do; they put her down that same day.
She was quite old, for a boxer. She lived 13 and a half wonderful years. She died in February, 2013. She would have been 14 that June. I have owned and lost another boxer since then, (who also beat the average, living to be 11), and now I have a little blind mutt who is almost 8. As much as I love the latter two dogs, Tasha was the greatest, most wonderful dog I've ever known, and may ever know. She was the glue that held my life together throughout my adolescence and early adulthood. I still miss her every day. She made me laugh and smile like no human has ever been able to. Her little wiggling nub of a tail and the in-constant-motion butt it was attached to never failed to make me grin. I miss the little things like that.
This is a long story for a comment. But boxers are wonderful. Dogs in general are amazing. I wish humans were more like them.

Mine would do the same thing and sit upright on the couch with us. She’d even watch tv in the evenings sitting upright or cuddling with a lucky family member. My favorite part is either the boxer face or the butt wag.

Outstanding tribute to Tasha. While she made your life a blessing while she was alive its obvious that you made her feel like the absolute queen that she was. I was visiting my parents when lockdown started and was stuck in New Zealand for 3 months, while I'd obviously known Gem from previous visits the lockdown gave me a solid 3 months of having her bless me with her love and affection every day. Just the little things like she'd randomly come into my room just to say hello and have a cuddle, to being told by my parents that she waited outside my room every morning until I woke up. She's 10 now and I'm dying to get back to New Zealand so I can see her one last time as I know she probably doesn't have much time left. I'm praying that restrictions get lifted soon over there. It's crazy but out of all my family in NZ I miss Gem the most. Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to grab the attention from your story, I just wanted to endorse your tribute by giving my experience of Boxer dogs. Thank you for your wonderful comment.

I love boxers. I've known them as "the eternal puppy," because they don't seem to ever grow up. Each one I've known has been playful in old age, just like when they were pups. Sometimes even hurting their self with their own excitement. Glad to see that this one has made it through some hardship.

Older dogs that go into the play-bow stance while frantically wagging their tail/hindquarters activate my 'd'aww'-mode even more than puppies do. Wait, what am I saying? All dogs are puppies. Bu- NO EXCEPTIONS!

Re: “heartbreak breeds”: I feel like if a dog breed is *so* well known for its health issues, something seriously needs to be done about the breed standards :/ (also extreme brachy breeds in general, crazy cancer rates in goldens, hip displasia in shepherds, etc)

    • @jamesbernards8409

Easy to say but how does one start by breeding cancer and heart defects *out* of a gene pool?

    • @CathyGoes
      @CathyGoes 2 роки тому +58

There are reputable breeders actively working towards a longer life span and less cancer/heart issues. It's difficult because it's more dangerous to breed an older bitch so you can't wait until you know she's going to have a longer life to breed her. You have to breed when she's in her prime and try to mitigate risks by looking at how the parents turned out but the parents aren't likely to have reached old age yet either! It takes decades to accomplish any sort of progress with something like cancer tendency later in life. They are working on it though.

We had a boxer for almost 7 years. She was the most loyal, loving girl I’ve ever met. I remember trying to walk her for the first time and she fussed the whole way, so when I was out of view of my house I picked her up and tucked her in my sweater and walked around the neighborhood. When she was finally confident enough to walk, we went everywhere together. Our favorite place was the creek. We jumped into the spring and swam summer after summer. Sometimes she would get out and roam the neighborhood, and I would sit and angrily wait on the porch for her return, though it never lasted long when I saw her sweet face running towards me. I left home for college and I wasn’t able to visit. She stopped eating which was odd for her since she was a fantastic eater. The vet said she was probably just depressed due to some recent changes in our family and she would get better with time. She never did. My mom continued to care for her for months but her health was declining rapidly and we just couldn’t understand why. She went out into the yard one afternoon and found my girl lying in the grass, unable to stand. They rushed her to the emergency vet, only to find that she was riddled with cancer and it was too far gone. My mom’s call to tell me that my girl had to be put down was the hardest call I’d ever received. I felt like I couldn’t breathe or swallow, and all I remember saying is “what?” She called me on FaceTime, and I didn’t recognize my dog. She was so skinny and lifeless, and the joy I had always seen when I looked into her eyes was gone. I started booking a flight home and begging my mom to hold off until I got there, but the more I looked at her the more I realized she was so tired of fighting and I had to let her go. I told her I loved her so many times until she took her last breath. I remember feeling the most intense, crushing pain inside my chest like someone was squeezing all the air from my lungs. I regret not going home before she passed. It’s been almost 3 years and it hasn’t gotten any easier. I can’t look at pictures of her without feeling so much guilt. For months after she passed I prayed that she’d visit me, or send me a sign that she’d crossed over and was finally free of her suffering. I have yet to see that sign.
Lou, I miss you so much. You were the best girl. I hope the rainbow bridge takes you to the most beautiful spring on the warmest summer day, so you can jump in again and again. ❤️

The great Dane and Boxer are from the same family, if I remember correctly. Both lovely dogs. I had a boxer named Hope, who actually belonged to my husband before I met him. She lived to be 11 and died from cancer. Sadly it was only 11 months after our pit mix passed away from cancer as well. They both were 11 when they passed and lived their entire lives together. We thought the boxer was just sad and sick because she lost her brother, but it was actually cancer for her too. Tall about heartbreak, losing 2 dogs that you've had for nearly 11 years just 11 months apart from each other.

The idea that mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebred dogs is a myth. Mixed breed and purebred dogs are just as likely to suffer from common health issues like cancers, hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation. There are simply more mixed breed dogs on the planet than purebred dogs, and that skews people's views on their "healthiness" because they have anecdotally met or owned more mixed breeds than purebreds. And there's also the fact that *_not every purebred dog is well-bred_*, and thus should not be judged on the same level of overall "healthiness", as careful breeding and health screening potential parents can easily reduce the risk of common health issues.

@@atreyu4ws Thank you, I was about to say that but in a very simplistic way, lol This idea that mixed breeds are "healthier" than pure breeds is a complete myth. They really are such sweethearts. My brother and his wife had one (He died damn near 8 years ago) called Vincent and his weirdest behavior was that any kind of fabric was something to lie on (spare socks included) and if you were on the ground, he was going to come stand over you. The first day I met him, I sat at the base of my brother's big chair instead of on it, and Vincent came and just...made a canopy of himself.
He was also very vocal, and could make sounds that sounded an awful lot like a very mournful "no" or "MUHMAH". We used to joke that my brother would teach him how to speak so he could tell intruders to "GET OUT OF THIS HOOOOUUUUUSEEE". I don't know what killed him, but it was a slow sad ride downhill.

"Slobber off your ceilings" explains a lot about visiting one of my friend's houses as a little kid and her mom was on a stepladder looking exasperated at said ceiling, Chloe the boxer running amok outside in the yard.

Our first dog was a boxer and she was the best dog ever, although very naughty as a pup, but she would learn so quickly. All you had to do was shout at her and put her in the spare room for an hour after she did something wrong, like the time she chewed up the whole vinyl flooring freshly laid my my father in the kitchen lol! She was reprimanded only once and she never did it again. You are so right about the health concerns too, she died age 7 of lymph node cancer and its the only time I've ever seen my dad cry. She also suffered from fits every now and then if she wore herself out running around, she never seemed to know when to stop and calm down. I miss jess to this day, and she passed away over 20 years ago. She loved people, kids especially, and got on with other dogs just as well. I couldn't recommend a better family dog in my experience.

I must agree with Boxers being one of the best breeds ever. Our Boxer lady Sissi is now 10 years and still acts like a puppy. She's doing great and the thought of loosing this loyal and so incredibly human like friend is heart shattering to me. She never encountered the problems listed above but she did have some medical situations. If you feel like getting this breed, you're in for a very emotional, loving companion :3
    I truly love this dog

I love boxers, too. Our family dog in my childhood was a boxer, and we adored him. Truly a children's dog. Yes, Clancy broke our hearts by dying of kidney failure. Four sobbing kids couldn't even eat for several days after he was put down. I don't think we knew how old he was, as he was given to my dad by someone at work. I don't remember him drooling that much, but his farts were legendary. Especially in winter, he would be sleeping in front of the fireplace, and a sudden horrible odor would clear the living room. 😲🤢😩😱😂

Buddy, hitting on women in the comment section of a UA-cam video is not the way. Please do yourself a favour and read about what women want and most importantly what they DON'T want. Spend at least 5 hours on it. I'm not trying to be offensive or mean, but you need to be better than this

I always come back to watch this video because yes, everything said here is true about boxers. Notably the slobber! The mop's always pressed to service to clean the floors and walls. And the 60 second water break is so true! 🤣😂🤣
My husband and I adopted a senior Boxer dog and we absolutely adore her. We're nervous being Maya's now 13 years old (folks are surprised to learn her age), but still spry and always makes us laugh during our morning walks with her prancing and excitement for breakfast. It's still a challenge leaving her home alone when doing errands, but we get that she just wants to be around her pack at all times. And sleep in her favorite bed! 😂
Oh i hope you have more videos of grooming Boxers in the future!
