To anyone wondering what this song is actually about: Susumu Hirasawa was writing about life after depression and anxiety. The song is portraying a return to form. It's a tad difficult to read into with translated lyrics. Essentially, there are drastic and dramatic events detailed in the lyrics (mushroom shaped clouds, birds feeding on bodies in the alley on an afternoon, large vapor trails, tidal waves, avalanches). These more negative or worrysome lyrics are countered with lines about remembering good things about life (I shall walk with you holding your hand while we smile, see the voice saying "it's all over" drowned in the wind, I shall talk to you on the grass in the sunlight, See our dreams are blossoming on the lunch bench). So what's being said here is that although bad things have happened and we keep our anxiety about these things, we must push forward with our good intentions, we must conclude with our dreams not put on hold, we must entertain ourselves and live a happy life or we will drown in potential sorrows of the past, present, and future. It's a song about optimism, change, and dreams in the face of crisis and anxiety/depression. At the end of all this we can sum it up by saying: The Dream Island is where we want to be, where we want our mind to live with our happiness, but we stick ourselves in an Obsessional Park and get dogged down by our own internal mechanisms, fears, and depressions. Go to the Dream Island.
Here's a fun bit of information: "Dream Island" (or Yumenoshima) is actually the name of an artificial island in Tokyo that was built on top of a landfill. It also has a famous public park, funnily enough (It hosted archery in the 2020 Olympics). A beautiful island built on top of a literal pile of garbage. Feels Thematically Relevant to the show!
Beautiful, vaguely haunting in a way one can't quite place, practically forces you to crack a smile if you sing along -- Susumu Hirasawa knows how to leave an impression on nearly any listener.
@@dieterdelange9488 wow that is a blast from the past, I don't get many replies to my comments (that aren't angry) at least not to my main comments (ones that are my own not replies) so thanks for that fellow Satoshi fan
@@inkoinfinity2 I actually still need to see Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers and Millenium Actress. XD But after seeing Perfect Blue and PA twice, as well as video essays about their complexity and themes, I realised that Kon was an extraordinary director. Both PB and PA are more relevant than ever: the former predicted our obsession with following celebrities on social media and tearing them down for the slightest error; the latter mass hysteria via social networking and continued false escapism from reality. Given that the world is even crazier than it was in 2004 when PA came out, I think that Kon would have magnificently continued his spoof on today's culture with his unique usage of symbolism and magic realism. I look forward to seeing the rest of his _ouvre_ .
@@dieterdelange9488 lol don't worry, I only saw paranoia agent, paprika and Tokyo godfathers and millennium actress myself (lol just realizing that's alot) but haven't seen perfect blue yet. So it's fine.
Like with Paprika, I wasn't too crazy about Susumu Hirasawa's songs. It just takes listening to them a few times to become really, really obsessed (or it has something to do with how I love Satoshi Kon's stuff.)
I saw this opening to the anime as a small child many different times as a child, and I never realized exactly how much it's influenced me today. I'm not going to say Paranoia Agent personally inspired me to think on a higher philosophical level of thinking since childhood, but I can certainly say that it was a large factor.
It is another amazing Satoshi Kon and Susumu Hirasawa collaboration. I recently started to get into Hirasawa's music, no doubt he is a musical genius. I especially recommend moon time.
(Not sure if my previous comment took or not) I LOVE this song. There's so much going on! The vocals, the background vocals, the rhythm, the weird whistling sound effects at the end of most of the lines, everything about this song is so unique!
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra a magnificent mushroom cloud in the sky Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra on an afternoon of small birds eating feed on a path Touching our hands to a lawn dappled with light, let's you and I talk Look, over a lunch bench, my dream will bloom Take the roar of the sea into your heart; submerge your depression Stretch a bridge to tomorrow; never worry about any tsunamis
i am so excited to watch this anime...i LOVE weird and strange and creepy stories...i've been told this one is one of the best...i just gotta wait until i have time to marathon...and not have it be in the middle of the night...something tells me that WOULDN'T be a good idea
Ever heard of Sign by Susumu Hirasawa? And Aria by Susumu Hirasawa? And pretty much many songs by Susumu Hirasawa only ofc, he's many levels above all musicians that exist/have ever existed
Ok so that doesn't sound like a HA sound, it sounds like Yume WA hanasaku. Its odd cuz some lyrics (romaji) have it as HA and some as WA. I hear the WA not a HA sound. Hope you get it fixed =^ ^=
It's about depression and learning to let it go, but not letting obsession take you over. Example the first line is gibberish, the third line, is the "Beautiful children lost in the Mushroom cloud in the sky, the marvelous vapor trail blows in the wind", still a beautifully written song for one so dark...

If they ever remake this for an American audience and don't include 9/11 imagery they are cowards
Goes quite well with the theme of the show
I get it after losing everything in a wildfire I feel this. Can picture myself standing in town as it burns around me just laughing.
Thank you for this lol

I'm a dumbass....but I just noticed that Shounen Bat's shadow is on Maromi's body. Fuckin' trippy.
Agreed! great analisis

the melody for this song is absolutely rediculous....i've never heard anything like it....this used to be my fav anime
The actual beginning lines are enlongating the word maigo maaa i aaaai go which means lost child
@ozzi9816
tsunamis are very common in japan - that's why the word "tsunami" for this kind of wave is from japanese.
@animelover10I there's nothing wrong with the audio a 2:14. That's how the song is.
Has anyone seen the actual opening to the anime?
I have. One of the more bizarre anime openings, but I love it.
Anime? Some brat with a bat hit me in the head, and I wound up here.
It’s on UA-cam. Paranoia Agent
