I’m so happy I found your channel, you articulate your points very well and you bring lots of insight towards the hobby for any tier of collectors! I recently went through my 2005-2009 childhood collection and now I’m back in the hobby.
when beckett started grading in the late 90s is when it took off. It became accessible to more people, or at least more widely known simply because everyone read beckett monthly at the time, and they began pricing graded cards (grading company agnostic btw, and they would pin recent sales by any grading company) and of course advertising their own grading services.
Very informative thanks ! I collect sports and Pokémon. I’ve only graded Pokémon with cgc. And now they have sports grading csg. I already have an account with them and I have some sports that I want to get graded. They have a bulk submission. Should I wait for psa or just use them. Thanks
It's not only the resell price that is different, but also what it cost to make them graded. PSA is 200$ per card while SGC is 30$. The waiting time to do so is also different. Great video.
The single most irrational market trait we have is the price gap between grading companies. Resale is determined by narrative, not objective realities.
I have a long-term question, that is probably impossible to answer. 15-20 years from now, will there be much difference in price (let’s say on a Griffey 1989 Upper Deck Rookie) between all the grading companies for the same grade? My point is that each grading company is staking out their territory now as PSA yields the best resale value. But if we are all selling that same card in 2035, will collectors be more focused on the grade than the grading company at that point?
You have a wonderful channel and I’m so glad I found you. I am a hobbyist first and foremost. I started collecting back in 2015-2016, mostly basketball. Through the years I have ripped open so many hobby boxes and cases. Spent a nice fortune. I have never sent cards in to get graded. I have some premium cards that I brought today to a card show to see what kind of value they would bring and possibly sell some. So my question to you.. is it normal when selling at card show to be offered 1/5th the value based off eBay comps? My cards are raw so would you recommend grading to get better value?
Is it normal to be low balled? Yes unfortunately but it also depends on the condition of your cards and what comp they are using so may not be totally unreasonable. Yes I would recommend grading to increase the value but only if the cost of grading makes sense relative to the potential forced appreciation. Thank you for your support!
I started buying PSA cards in the late 90's. At first the price guides had them valued extremely high but did not match actual prices you paid on eBay (auction only back then). As it caught on there were tons of grading companies, I did like the early USA (100 point system), & CSA (I think they were PSA graders that split off). I noticed PSA taking over in terms of prices a few years ago. Before that I remember paying the same for SCG, PSA, and BGS.
Great video as usual! Everything you said was true. Honestly, for my collection I just love HGA the most! If it’s between SGC and HGA I always lean towards HGA. I don’t buy PSA anymore, because I’m done paying more money for a more inconsistent grader.
First video and enjoyed it. Subscribed. I collected as a kid in the 90's but my baskeball cards are back home with the parents as I'm in the military. Thinking about going to pick my cards up but worried about their grading condition since I was around 10-14 handling them and storing them in those 9 card page books front and back. Any advice on maybe cleaning them or should i just keep them raw? Thanks!
Don't worry about condition just enjoy them and appreciate the memories each hold. If you want to have them encased for condition then just grade if not then keep them raw.
Are there any of these start up grading companies that are coming onboard that you feel may have chance at making a name for themselves in the next 5-10 years? Almost feels like prospecting on rookies to a degree if you do grade with any of them at this point. They could pan out, but who knows. Great content. Been following you for the last few weeks now. I learn a little something every time.
Right now only CGC the company that grades comics and Pokémon and sports cards may have a chance because they are established and have money to market themselves.
I am glad they started grading cards, back when I started collecting in the 90s it was hard to find a honest card shop to sell to. They always beat you up on condition and would sell for at NM prices.
Nice video. Thank you for posting it! Having followed the startup of HGA this year, it seems to me that they're committed to the craft and science of grading, building a community, and pushing the marketing. I agree that they do not yet hold a top spot in the grading market, but I feel they're a good bet to stay and be taken quite seriously. Cheers. -=Justin
When HGA first came out, HGA slabbed cards were getting the same price as PSA. I was actually surprised the resale value they were generating, but as time went on, now their slabs are way lower then PSA prices.
Good to see you again. Thank you for protecting the hobby as you educate new collectors. I don't like graded cards because it escalates the price of the product. In business is called the "greed factor." Collectors get addicted to this. Continue educating collectors and see you next time.
BGS is the strongest by far. PSA gave out to many 10 s awhile back to stay in business. Now they up fees and got more picky on grades. SGC has always been a level below these 2 company's but has had a pretty steady grading scale thruout.
I recently rediscovered my basketball card collection, a couple 70s, some 80s but mostly 90s, up to about 98, and with that your channel as well. I'd never gotten a card graded, but several worth grading. I'm looking into CSG. I know they are new as well (they have other established branches of authentication/grading, but for sports cards are new). So on the market they don't have as much presence yet, but they definitely are my prefered as far as presentation, and seems very professional/legit. I'd be submitting from the EU, and I was surprised you didn't mention CSG...thoughts/experience??
I like them for Pokémon cards because I collect their graded comics but they're still too new to the game for me to consider grading with at this point. Maybe in a year they will have a bigger footprint in the market.
They are the only company I use! The grading is very fair, sometimes I wish my grade was higher but in the big picture I would WAY rather have a true grade than an inflated one.
Protecting the integrity of the hobby well said I’m always preaching this if we want this market to be takin serious fake autos, card trimming this kinda garbage makes the card market look like a joke.
thanks for the video! love your content! Ive been thinking about sending some cards to sgc because of psa and bgs prices and now I am definitely going to test it out and send some! will you be at the westgate show this weekend? hopefully see you there!
Thanks for your support! SGC is a great option right now I think. No I'm not from the Bay Area so I won't be at that show. I just did it last month to try it out. I plan to be in the SF show in October.
I just like slabbed cards. Centering and corners are my personal likes surface and edges as long as it’s not a crazy noticable flaw it doesn’t bother me. Value, grade, company, doesn’t matter to me as long as I have the card that fits my criteria. Any slab works for me. Thanks for the video.
I think BGS 10s and black labels are much higher or better condition than the average PSA 10. Cards that get PSA 10 rating would get BGS 9.5s. I truly believe this being a Yugioh collector for many years. IDK if its the same way for sports cards but I can't see why not. BGS cards rated high are on average the best condition cards on the market IMO. Good video, just found your channel!
Yes I would agree but I didn't mention it because the point I wanted to highlight is that these labels are just gimmicks and an attempt by the companies to differ themselves from each other and add artificial value to the cards. When you get into that level you are buying the label not the card.
Thanks for the information, I was tossing around an idea for making uncounterfeitable grading for cards but haven't been in the hobby for many years. I almost thought it would be useless to start a new grading company but when you mentioned you don't know what the future holds it dawned on me that although PSA is king, it's only due to marketing and with some great marketing and the advantage of having an uncounterfeitable sealed packet would be a highly desirable asset. I'll even take your PSA grades card and make it uncounterfeitable guaranteed. What do you think about that. Seriously
Any thoughts on how the grading industry might evolve given the challenges around PSA (and BGS) backlog and turnaround times? It's pretty crazy that people have been waiting well over a year for their cards. Might PSA decide to stay at just their super express/express offerings as a premium card grader, and leave the lower end slabs to competitors? And if that happens, would that potentially help elevate the standing of some of the other competitors?
Unfortunately the Pop count is not accurate as people crack cards and have them re-graded. I'm not a fan of the grading companies because it's inconsistent and essentially a collecting tax. With the scanning technology out now, ask yourself why there isn't a company electrically grading them? Thank you for the video!
the only way I will deviate from PSA, is if a third party makes a combined pop report that encompasses all grades cards and pops from PSA, BGS and SGC. otherwise, no point in deviating from the pop report. if I grade my card, I want it included in the pop report so it ranks properly agains all other examples of that card. PSA has added huge value to mass produced cards that should not have any value. for example, Shaq’s 1992 Topps rookie card. PSA 10’s are worth $300, 9’s way less, 8s way way less. without PSA creating a “PSA-10” of this card, I imagine that all examples would sell for like $20 or less
New subscriber new collector. One thing I think you should have spoken about is the price difference in value between each grading company. So as you mentioned if you have the same card with the 3 different grading companies and they all grade it the highest. Let’s say 10. What is the price or value difference going from psa to bgs to sgc? Also a question. If I buy a graded card from sgc. And it’s the highest grade. Then why don’t I just take it out and send it to psa and have it regarded (I know the cost is high with them) and except or hope it’s a 10 then sell it?
There's no standard to determine the difference in value between the grading companies so I didn't want to say PSA is % better then BGS and again the market can change its opinion. Also I didn't want the focus to be on why each company is better then the other and how cards can be cracked and resubmitted I think there's enough content out there that speaks on that. My intention was to give the basics on the 3 grading companies and talk about why people value graded cards over raw cards and shift the focus to the cards not the labels. Also to highlight the pop up grading companies trying to cash in on the trend.
Good job on the video! Very few in the hobby have admitted that they are slab collectors, not card collectors. CGC has done similar damage to comic collecting. Truly the worst has to be the trend to grading unopened video games (cases and cellophane, really - the case could be empty for all you know) and now, unbelievably, sealed VHS tapes.
i love BGS slabs, bulky and thick, like a Megatron whereas PSA is easily crackable...like an out of date Bubble Bee... i wish Beckett could change the color tone just a little bit, make it brighter
I'm still waiting for a68 card psa return that was sent out in dec of last year. I'm still on step 3 which is identification. I go on every day and check it like a little kid. Mostly 80s baseball and ultramodern football and modern football. Im thinking I might get them back by Nov.
I remember distinctly in 2000 when grading became a mainstream thing. Maybe it was a big push in Beckett Magazine. I joined the herd and had a couple cards graded. But it definitely wasn't seen as a 5x multiplier. How would you even go about selling?
Subscribed great video What is the cheapest grading company 2 just grade one card i have the larry bird magic rookie dr j is also on card should i just do psa what do u reccomend the card has been in a screw down case for 41 years also i heard screw downs bring the grade down do u think thats true
The screw downs can damage the card sometimes. I would say SGC is the best option at $30 but if the card is Hugh value $1000+ PSA is your best bet but I'm not familiar with the value of that card so you will need to do some researchZ watch my other video on how to price your cards or how to value rare cards for examples.
Starting to like your channel, thanks for content. Yes, HGA is a new company, but IMO I think HGA will set a new grading criteria. They are not just a pretty label but as a good business, they want to improve on everything! PSA has many problems and their grading is not consistent. Don't get me wrong I do own PSA cards too. Have you heard what HGA is doing as a grading company? They are actually using high tech machines and then the human eye is the 2nd step. A grade 10 or higher should not be easy to accomplish. And I bet many people will not like that reality. A 10 should be flawless... not what PSA is doing with a % allowance on centering for example. If it is not 100% it shouldn't be a 10. And the same for other companies, making high grades too easy to get. If you have not watch a YT video about them or interviews with the owner, I highly recommend you to and anyone else to see what they are trying to do for the community/hobby. Don't take my word for it. A HGA9~9.5 will be a PSA10..... and the more time goes by I see PSA and other grading companies will need to follow suit. And not to mention, HGA's grading prices is where they are supposed to be. Take Care!
Never heard of graded cards even in the 80s or 90s or saw any at a card shop and they wanted to charge and arm and a leg for cards they deemed as NM or better; but, in today’s standards they would be less probably because back then it merely meant sharp corners and clean surface. Hobby as certainly changed, I usually only by a raw card that’s in really good shape and have it graded for my PC later.
i pulled a Joe Burrow Encased rookie cap auto ... knew it was a 15k ++ card, then read the grade 8.5 ... ugh... so depressing to get an 8.5 out the box before i even touch it ... a NM is 15k ... an 8.5 .. who knows? so disapointing
After sending a heap of cards to BGS and PSA over the last couple years iv decided I really like the sub grades.. Maybe PSA, should hand out a report to let their customers know why they graded cards what they did, instead of leaving their customers guessing half the time.
Things have changed the past year. SGC is arguably #2 and CSG is considered part of the Big 4 grading companies. In my opinion CSG has the best slabs on the market…
Remember that Tom Brady card graded as a Beckett 8 that sold for $1.32 million earlier this year? If it were graded by PSA it certainly would have sold for at least 10 mil... The same card graded by HGA as a 9.5 sold for only 50 bucks. And an SGC 10 version of that card was found in a trash can. Remember, your card isn't worth ANYTHING unless PSA grades it. :)
Nice video. I do disagree with resell value of HGA. I have had excellent resell value value with them. Comparable to PSA. But HGA does not hand out 10s like PSA. HGA 10s sell for much higher, just much more rare to get a HGA 10.
Subgrades. The whole point of grading is for the professional to help you understand a card's condition without having it in hand. That is why I prefer BGS when buying.
I like the idea of HGA, I hope they continue to do well. I feel PSA and the other companies are becoming to subjective. With HGA you get a computer plus a person grading your card. I would rather have a harder grade than someone having a bad day grade my card.
Great video but I disagree with you saying newer companies like HGA have little to no value. This is already proving to be untrue where comps for HGA and SGC have come close to and in some instances surpassed BGS and PSA. People are tired of waiting 6 months and paying $200 per card. PSA is allowing these other companies a seat at the table because of their selfish practices
@@kalsummers9555 yes they do. SGC is a well run company with a good reputation & consistent grading you never know they might move up the chain in modern. There already the Big Dog in vintage.
Great video although I disagree with HGA and CSG only having slabbed or holder value. HGA is a legit company and they’re proving it today. They started hot then cooled off. Now I think since they made some recent updates to their online order portal that they will take off again. Also they’re about to release their video on their patented AI.
Great video and you make some solid points. Some advice - please stop doing “video premieres” on UA-cam. These show up on my UA-cam feed and just serve to clog it up and annoy me. I doubt many people “set a reminder”. My advice is simple: just drop the video at a consistent time every day or week and people will get used to it and look out for it. They will set a “psychological anchor” for themselves… see what i did there.
The earliest grading companies Daniel: Superlative and ASA/Accugrade from Alan Hager (started in 1984) who had the copyright on the 10 point grading system and the patent on the Arrowhead holder which PSA employed when they opened in 1991. TPG's took off in the 90s since there wasn't internet sales (with great scans) and it was hard to know how good a card was by "personal" description or a very poor scan in SCD e.g. Let me just add one opine re: BGS and sales. They "rarely" assign the grade of 10 - so my take would be that a BGS 10 will garner more $ than a PSA 10 if both were to come up simultaneously? A problem for some with respect to SGC? The black gasket will allow a card to "slide" under it and potentially damage the card - this can happen in shipment due to high vibration.
If you are spending hard earned money on vintage you need to buy a graded card period. There is just too much dishonesty in the hobby on vintage. Too much funny business to trust vintage ungraded. It used to be that people would say you need to buy a least a PSA graded 8 for an investment grade vintage card. Good luck finding those at any reasonable cost. Now you have to look at 7's. The hobby can be fun. It's no fun paying for cards people are messing with. The first important card graded by PSA the Honus Wagner was later admitted to be trimmed. That's all you need to know.
Unfortunately, for vintage, I think you greatly missed the mark and made a bunch of generic comments that many collectors don't subscribe to - vintage collectors do care about raw cards, especially vintage set builders. If you go to a large major show that has a heavy vintage reputation, you will see many collectors pouring over raw cards to finish sets. Most vintage collectors have always cared about condition, corners, creases/wrinkles, surface issues, and for me especially centering - all things that effect eye appeal. I have graded cards in my vintage sets, particularly of the 8-10 biggest and highest dollar ones from the set, but many, many of those were purchased raw and submitted for grading myself rather than buying already graded. If somebody is a vintage collector, and especially a vintage set collector, I believe what I've described are pretty wide spread accepted norms. I've found most of your other videos pretty informative, but unfortunately you turned me off with this one.
Vintage is a stand alone category now. If you go to any show the over whelming majority is modern cards. At the national many of the vintage tables had little traffic compared to the graded modern tables. You make valid points about the vintage market but that is not what my video is about and unfortunately not where the current hobby is focused on today.
Weird that an expert talking about slabs would not talk about the cost of said slab for each company and turnaround time for each company all relevant in Game of sports cards

That would be a great service! Valid points thanks for sharing.
first time watcher. love the premise
Thank you!
I’ve never been a fan of all these pop up companies but, HGA is making all the right moves and there further looks bright.
There's potential there
New subscriber new collector.
Sealed VHS is just a money grab. People are being fooled by these companies trying to create a category that doesn't need to exist just for profit.
i love BGS slabs, bulky and thick, like a Megatron whereas PSA is easily crackable...like an out of date Bubble Bee... i wish Beckett could change the color tone just a little bit, make it brighter
Love the analogy lol
go avs
Congrats on 1k
Thank you sir!
I like SGC and BGS for my PC. Cheaper to buy. PSA is obviously the standard but if I can save 10-20% by buying the other labels then I am all for it.
That's the play!
I'm still waiting for a68 card psa return that was sent out in dec of last year. I'm still on step 3 which is identification. I go on every day and check it like a little kid. Mostly 80s baseball and ultramodern football and modern football. Im thinking I might get them back by Nov.
You and me both brother haha
I remember distinctly in 2000 when grading became a mainstream thing. Maybe it was a big push in Beckett Magazine. I joined the herd and had a couple cards graded. But it definitely wasn't seen as a 5x multiplier. How would you even go about selling?
Things have definitely changed
Subscribed great video
What is the cheapest grading company
2 just grade one card i have the larry bird magic rookie dr j is also on card should i just do psa what do u reccomend the card has been in a screw down case for 41 years also i heard screw downs bring the grade down do u think thats true
Thanks
SGC “should” provide online explanation of their grading covering 4 sub grades to differentiate from BGS and psa
DSG does that! Its pretty sweet to be honest.
👍
Thank you Sir!
👍
Take Care!
Great points and maybe hga will gain market share in time 👍
Never heard of graded cards even in the 80s or 90s or saw any at a card shop and they wanted to charge and arm and a leg for cards they deemed as NM or better; but, in today’s standards they would be less probably because back then it merely meant sharp corners and clean surface. Hobby as certainly changed, I usually only by a raw card that’s in really good shape and have it graded for my PC later.
The hobby has definitely changed
The intro is golden
Thank you hahah
Very informative! Thank you.
Thank you
i pulled a Joe Burrow Encased rookie cap auto ... knew it was a 15k ++ card, then read the grade 8.5 ... ugh... so depressing to get an 8.5 out the box before i even touch it ... a NM is 15k ... an 8.5 .. who knows? so disapointing
Sorry to hear that but grading is subjective. Maybe you'll get a better grade if you resubmit.
What about a monster like CSG?
Too soon to tell with that one.
As soon as they get rid of the cockeyed label design, they will be fine.
Great video... thank you. I've got about 5000 cards that were given to me. I wish I had the money to get them graded. Lol
Grade a few at a time and flip them to grade more. It'll be a grind but it can be done.
@@TheGreatCurator. never thought about that. Thank you
Omfg I love this fucking intro just subbed
Lol thank you!
After sending a heap of cards to BGS and PSA over the last couple years iv decided I really like the sub grades..
Maybe PSA, should hand out a report to let their customers know why they graded cards what they did, instead of leaving their customers guessing half the time.
Yes I wish they did that too.
Things have changed the past year. SGC is arguably #2 and CSG is considered part of the Big 4 grading companies. In my opinion CSG has the best slabs on the market…
👍
Remember that Tom Brady card graded as a Beckett 8 that sold for $1.32 million earlier this year? If it were graded by PSA it certainly would have sold for at least 10 mil... The same card graded by HGA as a 9.5 sold for only 50 bucks. And an SGC 10 version of that card was found in a trash can. Remember, your card isn't worth ANYTHING unless PSA grades it. :)
Very true
Valuable information. Thanks
Thank you
For me I'd take anything Vintage in a SGC case over PSA regardless of value.
I do like the vintage SGC too
I love the SCG case! I prefer to buy SCG for my PC, but I do not get great prices on resale.
well done boss man!!!
Thank you sir!
Lot of collectors only focus on pop reports on psa and they should be looking at all the major grading brands..
Very true
I always see BGS more than PSA for nhl hockey cards. Not even close most of the time.
👍
@@TheGreatCurator. is hockey unique? Psa is more money for other sports?
Where have i seen this intro 🤔🤔🤔
😄😄😄
Right here it's totally original
Good Video !!!!
Thank you!
@thegreatcurator what you think about csg?
They need a better label and more marketing.
Nice video. I do disagree with resell value of HGA. I have had excellent resell value value with them. Comparable to PSA. But HGA does not hand out 10s like PSA. HGA 10s sell for much higher, just much more rare to get a HGA 10.
That's interesting thank you for sharing your experience 👍
Subgrades. The whole point of grading is for the professional to help you understand a card's condition without having it in hand. That is why I prefer BGS when buying.
Good pointsp
I love Beckett, but man do they need to fix their website and their app.
They're definitely way behind the times
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
👍
Love the parody intro of @sportscardinvestor
Thank you!
I like the idea of HGA, I hope they continue to do well. I feel PSA and the other companies are becoming to subjective. With HGA you get a computer plus a person grading your card. I would rather have a harder grade than someone having a bad day grade my card.
It's where the future of grading is headed. I just hope they can market themselves effectively and the hobby accepts them.
I always believed, that with graded cards, the argument was about the price, and not the grade.
👍
I’m SGC all the way. I might buy PSA slabs going forward. I will never grade with PSA again.
Sgc is a good play
Great video but I disagree with you saying newer companies like HGA have little to no value. This is already proving to be untrue where comps for HGA and SGC have come close to and in some instances surpassed BGS and PSA. People are tired of waiting 6 months and paying $200 per card. PSA is allowing these other companies a seat at the table because of their selfish practices
Yeah, PSA and Beckett are dead to a large number of collectors in the hobby. We have moved on.
Could be true yes only time will tell p
I love HGA. I think they are the future.
They do make pretty slabs 👍
this intro made me die laughing
Then I accomplished my goal lol thank you!
PSA is king of Modern & SGC is king of vintage & BGS Black label trumps all in value & SGC Pristine Gold will outsale a PSA 10
things change
@@kalsummers9555 yes they do. SGC is a well run company with a good reputation & consistent grading you never know they might move up the chain in modern. There already the Big Dog in vintage.
👍
Great video although I disagree with HGA and CSG only having slabbed or holder value. HGA is a legit company and they’re proving it today. They started hot then cooled off. Now I think since they made some recent updates to their online order portal that they will take off again. Also they’re about to release their video on their patented AI.
Should be interesting to see how they grow their footprint in the market in the coming years
Yikes, this didn’t age well😂😂😂😂😂
Great video and you make some solid points.
Good points I didn't know that's how it was seen from the viewer perspective
The comp to a PSA 10 really should be the SGC 10, not 9.5.
👍
Great info yes bgs 10 is worth more but I didn't want to get into that for this video.
@@TheGreatCurator. Thanx Daniel. I didn't get a chance to thank you for the video - good information and review of the big 3.
I think bgs 10 go for way more then PSA 10
BGS Black label trumps all in resale value
@@cantoncardcollector1512 even the regular bgs 10 takes PSA 10. Black label is the holy grail
Bgs black label is king
@@Nickcards82 you are correct
👍
I like SGA just because PSA takes a year and SGA is a month lol
Valid point
Hello sports card investors
🤣
i like hga
👍
If you are spending hard earned money on vintage you need to buy a graded card period. There is just too much dishonesty in the hobby on vintage. Too much funny business to trust vintage ungraded. It used to be that people would say you need to buy a least a PSA graded 8 for an investment grade vintage card. Good luck finding those at any reasonable cost. Now you have to look at 7's. The hobby can be fun. It's no fun paying for cards people are messing with. The first important card graded by PSA the Honus Wagner was later admitted to be trimmed. That's all you need to know.
Great points!
This could have been 5 secs long, PSA cards cost more period
I need my videos to be longer and it's not about the cost it's about understanding the differences
Psa is a joke now!! They went from the best to the worst! AS a industry we need to move away from PSA.
Valid points
You make valid points about the vintage market but that is not what my video is about and unfortunately not where the current hobby is focused on today.
the 4 minute preface is immaterial. when you say let's just get right into it, you should have done that at the beginning.
Just fast forward then
CSG is legit
👍
Weird that an expert talking about slabs would not talk about the cost of said slab for each company and turnaround time for each company all relevant in Game of sports cards
🤷♂️
The hobby is not about graded cards. Those are for the sharks who only care about the value of cards. I laugh at this.
🤷♂️
Lmao .. nobody is gonna say anything about this dude pretty much having the exact same intro as Sports Card Investor ? 🤦
No because it's totally original.
