  • Airdate: March 22, 1966
Dick Moreland (DJ on KRLA), Dean Torrence (Jan & Dean), and Mike Clifford (“Close To Cathy”, ’62) drop by to surprise Casey Kasem in this segment of Shebang’s first anniversary show. Mike Clifford mentions the song “Batman” by Jan & Dean which had just been released a month ago. It was part of their new “Jan & Dean Meet Batman” album, released to capitalize on the popularity of the new “Batman” TV series. Sadly, in less than a month, Jan Berry will suffer severe head injuries after being in a car accident on Whittier Drive, very close to “Deadman’s Curve” on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
“I Know A Place”, which peaked at #3 back on May 1, 1965, was Petula Clark and composer Tony Hatch’s follow-up to their #1 hit “Downtown”. In 1966 Petula won the Grammy for “Best Contemporary Vocal Performance (R&R) of 1965-Female” for the song.
As American Bandstand and Shebang were taped only about 2 miles apart and both shows were produced by Dick Clark, there were several AB regulars dancing here today including: Famous Hooks (0:59), Melody McMurray & Jeff Hight (on the riser 1:18), June Strode (1:45), Steven Schreiner (1:58), Terry Cooksley (2:06), Buddy Schwimmer (talking to Casey at 2:12) and although she isn’t seen today, Peggy Waggoner was there as well. Check out the invitation letter and the ticket for today’s special episode in the “Community” tab, provided by Peggy (Waggoner) Names…..Thank you Peggy!

yea few dress up anymore but when you find someone who does it catches your eye, even when I was in early collage just after the turn of the millenium people still dressed up or at least did preppy to a degree, its come back for some but its the lesser liked aspects of the 80's that I see the clear rim glasses for esample or pinkish colored shirts, though some like me and many I associate with while volenteering on the historical railroad soc or at church, wear at least buisness casual, or you know timeless across generations button down shirts, or a hat of some kind like a fedora, that look a bit more rugged, or at least skilled trades and cozy looking and slightly dressed up and modest or at least not just sloppy.

Again, great research on your liner notes which I always look forward to reading. :---) Such a shame about Jan Berry...He would never be quite the same after that horrific accident. Ironic thing about Petula Clark: Teens were really into Pet's groovy sound without stopping to realize that this was a seasoned performer of sorts already in her 30s when her first hits seemed to be flowing back to back. @rslitman, Shebang was mostly seen on KTLA channel 5 in the LA area. It was syndicated and shown in a few markets outside of LA as well, but these markets were few and far between. Shivaree was syndicated in 150 markets nationally, but maybe DC was not one of those markets. Thank you for the great question!

Casey K was also a very popular DJ at that time too, on KRLA (with Bob Eubanks, Dave Hull of Hullabaloo Club. A lot of the DJs went into TV right then and there. I was on the show occasionally (and Lloyd Thaxton). Thanks for showing this clip. Love it. Casey Kasem genuinely nice guy up close and personal on the show.

I have 2 or 3 more clips with Miss Clark and ohhhh, good question. I really love her whole catalogue but if I have to choose one favorite (really, really tough) I’d say.....to dance to it’s “Sign of the Times” and to just listen to it’s ”I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”. Thank you for the question Stevie G.

@@marge3470 Thanks Molly. There is also a great clip of her dancing to "I Fought The Law" with Famous on a Bandstand spotlight show. They certainly had some moves. I was curious so I did a bit of research - from a site called myheritage.com - "Junelehua Kalaeloa Strode - is an actress, dancer, and is the daughter of actor Woody Strode and Princess Luukialuana "Luana" Kalaeloa Strode, a descendant of the last great queen of Hawaii; Liliuokalani. June was best know for her regular appearance with partner Famous Hook on Dick Clarks American Band Stand during the 1960's. June appeared with her father, actor Woody Strode in the 1975 movie, Winterhawk, and would find work in small acting roles and appearing in some 1970's TV commercials.
Interesting that she was Woody Strode's daughter. Anyway, hopefully she is well.
