  • At The Sign of the Golden Ball in Colonial Williamsburg's (2024) | Silversmith James Craig's Shop:
Step into the captivating world of Colonial Williamsburg through a curious exploration titled, "At The Sign of the Golden Ball in Colonial Williamsburg.”
This quest takes viewers on a journey back in time, delving into the world of silversmithing in one of America's most iconic historical settings, a part of the living history museum that makes up Colonial Williamsburg.
Armed with curiosity, we approach the charming storefront bearing the sign of James Craig’s workshop, the Golden Ball. Nestled amidst the Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg, this quaint shop serves as a portal to the past, promising a glimpse into the craftsmanship of yesteryears.
As we enter the doorway, we embark on a journey through the artistry of the silversmith trade. From the delicate hammering of silver to the meticulous shaping of intricate creations, every step of the ancient craft is performed here just as it was done in the 18th century, and we get an opportunity to learn a little more about it during our visit.
Venturing beyond the confines of the shop, the story takes a detour into the backyard area of the Golden Ball. Surrounded by neighboring historic landmarks and wedged within the beauty of Colonial Williamsburg restoration, a reflective stroll ponders stories of shop owner James Craig’s past during a walk amongst the outbuildings he utilized and the scenic landscapes he once roamed.
As the documentary draws to a close, we step back inside the Golden Ball once more. From exquisite jewelry to a variety of finely crafted metal tableware, and other merchandise, the Golden Ball offers a tangible connection to the past, bridging the gap between history and modern day.
"At The Sign of the Golden Ball" is an appealing journey through time, and a celebration of colonial craftsmanship. A testament to the enduring spirit of Colonial Williamsburg and all they do to uphold the authenticity of the many trades of the past, like silversmithing, that were carried out in the days of old.

Many of the trades moved when the government moved. James Geddy Jr, Silversmith, also sold his city property at the same time.

You make great, professional videos on Old Historic Williamsburg. Have you considered doing some in downtown Charleston SC ? I sure they would be good.
