- I show how to take apart, clean, lube and put back together a rear bike derailleur. The derailleur I used in the video is a Shimano RD-5600 road bike derailleur. Other derailleurs will be similar, but may have differences, especially where removing the cage from the main derailleur body.

Very well done and is a testimony to your attention to detail. You're somehow able to manipulate the body of the derailleur without ever obscuring the mechanical element you're concentrating on at the time. This is a talent that is lacking in many an instructional video and makes your's especially easy to assimilate. Very good hand work with the respective tools as well. Another worthy entry in your series.

I want to thank you enormously your educational videos about the inner mechanisms of bike's parts. In my case, the have helped a lot particularly and generally.
Particularly, to fix a frozen read derailleur Tiagra 4600 b-axle. Thanks to this video, and another one of your dedicated to that particular problem, I was able to understand the working mechanism of this part, understand the root cause and fixing it.
Generally, because by watching your videos and replicating your actions, I grew in confidence in my manual abilities and I began to develop some creativity in how to solve some issues, the most basic one, for example, how to replicate some of your actions when I didn't have your tools with the ones I have. Thanks to that, yesterday, with a problem of a frozen arm bolt unit, I had the confidence to dismount the whole brake piece by piece, lube everything and make it again fully functional.
Thanks to you, besides saving a huge amount of money and making usable again parts that I would have discarded wasting many valuable materials from a limited supply in the Earth, I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot.

This may be the best how-to video I've seen on youtube. Thank you! I appreciate how you pointed out all the little details of what to keep track of. And the camera angle was perfect so I could see all the little details. I would have likely ended up with a pile of pieces and hopelessness without this video. Now I've got my derailleur back together with new pulleys.

Just did this on a Deore M591 SGS. Everything the same as RJ's 105, except, B-spring tension was a lot higher. Even using the same method, getting the B-spring assembly back together was quite difficult. The bike has been ridden 5 seasons on a lot of gritty trails. The outside of the derailer was dirty. The pulleys needed cleaning. (pulleys have been cleaned annually) But, inside the P and B spring chambers was clean! I really did not have to go through that pain at all! Cleaning the pulleys and exterior was all that was really needed. Next time, I'm leaving that B-spring alone!

So grateful for this. Took just a couple of mins with brake cleaner, mucoff degreaser and some thick grease. Probably would have taken way longer without this video!
Years go by, new RDs are getting released, yet this video still works. Mine wasn't loose, was completely stuck. Found a random seal stuck inside of the spring rather than sitting on the outside.

You saved me. Thank you! I'm reasonable good at fixing my bike, but never had a rear derailleur spring pop out on me! I thought I killed my Arabesque 600, because I didn't know how to twist the coil to get sufficient tension. You really helped me out :)

Thanks for a really useful video - have just removed, regreased and reinstalled a stiff pivot bolt on a year 2000 XT SGS derailleur thanks to you!
Didn't have a vice (limey spelling!) to hand but with a 5mm allen key in the pivot bolt and a 3mm one hooked through the B-tension screw hole, it was very easy to rotate the assembly against the spring to locate it correctly; hope that might help someone out there.

The pivot bolt at 13 minutes saved me. Though I had no vice. So I had to get a little tricky. 2/10 wouldnt do again. But leveraging the allen against me worked the same. That bastard. I had to fix it because it lost its C clip. Without this video I probably wouldn’t be riding again fora few weeks. Thank you as always RJ.
I thought the spring of my derailleur was broken. But it was only sprung out of the guidance. With your video it was easy to fix. Thank you! you saved me 40$ for a new derailleur.

Huh? You lost me.
They're labeled index system. Look at Huffy Superia bikes and you'll see one called Power Index System. That's the kind of derailleur I'm talking about.

Because the pulley wheels are of slightly different width (size) I found that the length of the holding screws differ also (ever so slightly) - so best to keep track of which screw/axle belongs to which wheel, to save messing around :)

That does not make sense. The width of the plastic pulleys is different so that the G pulley can slide on its metal bushing a bit to adjust to the position of the sprocket. The length of the metal bushings is the same, and the screws are the same, the difference if there is any is unimportant since the bushings are the same size.

please help me ; i have a saiguan index rear derailleur and i can not take off its cage to put it on another derailleur ; i mean there is no bolt to unscrew
with a pointy metal tool, you can remove the parallelogram spring (and get it back on), makes it a lot easier to clean the inside of the paralellogram.

The tension pulley is directional, so make sure you look at the direction arrow on that pulley.
I am currently doing a Road/commuter bike build for a friend and this helped me alot. Since i am trying to do a good job.
But i dont think il be touching the pivot bolt. :D

Do you have minions? That's what I call the things I can't see that come and take small parts like screws and washers and especially springs! They really love stealing those.
It will be sitting right next to me carefully placed, I look away, work for a bit and sometimes when I go to get the screw,for example, it's gone! And it never comes back! (Vincent says I'm delusional. 🙄)
My point? If you don't have any minions, I'll be glad to send you mine!

I just finished rebuilding a Schwinn (Shimano) GT400 from a 73 Le Tour. It is amazing how much is the same between these derailleurs.

Since the main body can’t be disassembled, what can be done if the return spring seems weak?
I have been using my road bike with a Shimano 105 rear derailleur for about 4 years already but I've no idea how to service the rear derailleur. It's embarrassing that I haven't disassembled it to clean and lube. It's a good thing that I'm not having any problem with it but I have to clean it. +Michael Angelo Samson I usually just clean them with soap and water. And drip a little synthetic oil into the pivot points. I rarely disassemble them to the point in this video. I will however remove the pulleys to clean and lube those. I service as needed. Though it never hurts to clean and lube them once in a while.
That's the only thing I do with my rear derailleur regularly, clean and lube the pulleys. Thanks, RJ.

How do I get a new clip? I lost mine . The small clip that hold it in place.
I flipped a new bike upside down to service it but had a wtf moment when the derailleur cage just parted company from the body and hung there on the chain! OK.... let’s fix this....how on earth do you tension it??? ASK AJ!! Lifesaver thanks

Hey, sorry for the late question. For the spring in the derailleur, what happens if you insert the spring into the second plate hole, and not the first?
My shifting for my ultegra 6700 isnt very good and I was wondering if I could engage the spring in the second plate to have it under more tension.... alternatively, I would replace the spring.
Hi RJ, nice video, nicely in detail explained. At the begining you named the guide pulley as the lower one, or at least it is what it seems. And at the end you named the upper one the guide pulley. I'm confused now although I've always thought that the guide is the upper one and the tension is the lower one because it mantains the chain tension while the G guides the chain onto the sprockets. The section about b-axle reassembly (starting 12:55) should only be followed if you've got a RD-5600. While reassembling a RD-6600 (same period, roughly), I made the mistake of blindly following this video's advice about which spring tension hole to use and will need to buy new parts for the assembly. RJ generally gives good advice but it needs more disclaimers when giving specific advice when there are many different versions of derailleur with varying construction.
Also, I'd recommend against using vice grips on the tab as RJ does - I almost screwed up the threads for the b-limit screws.
Pro tip, if it seems like you need to rotate the spring more than 90 degrees, you're probably using the wrong hole.

Maybe you weren't aware, but Shimano made many different derailleurs in the 80s.

+Bicyle Man Grease makes them more sluggish. I use a synthetic oil. You want to make sure whatever you use is safe for the plastic.

I have rebuilt both my Bottom bracket and rear derailleur using your videos. The tasks were not too difficult, but you have to pay attention.Question: I just purchased new shimano brake and shifter sets including the cables and housings. Should I lube the cables before sliding into the housings, or will this gum up the nylon inner sleeves? Thoughts???
+Bicyle Man Modern cables have plastic linings and don't need lube. In fact it can be counter productive.
Strange... I work in a bike shop as an apprentice mechanic and the head mechanic who went to Barnetts Bike school told me to put Tri-Flow ( a very thin lubricant) into the cable housings and on the cables every time.

Just buy a new (used) derailleur. Easier.
One of the easiest things to take apart. One of the hardest to put back together. The last spring is the most difficult and need a vice.

What did you use to clean the parts with? Degreaser first, dishwashing liquid, wash then dry?
