I'm a mechanic, but i don't usually make maintenance on this kind of derailleur, the first i did was a Tourney TY-300, thanks to the awesome content! :)
I have an RD-6700 that was totally frozen up. I was able to get everything back to specs and freed up except the B-Axle bolt and tensioner spring. After watching your video, I was able to disassemble/clean/grease/reassemble and remount on the frame. It is as limber as my other two bikes with Shimano RD's. THANKS for your video, it saved me probably $30 in labor by doing it myself. Have a great day!!!
Gute Arbeit mein Freund. A good result is celebrated best with some German commentary. Another great video for the library. To be taken from the shelf when the time of maintenance comes.
That was a fantastic video. I have one just like that, and I'm about to clean it up. The guy at the bike shop told me they don't come apart. Hmm, we'll see about that. :)
HellO! I had a question! For the spring in the derailleur, what happens if you insert the spring into the second plate hole, and not the first? My shifting for my ultegra 6700 isnt very good. it is from a 2010 bike that did have many miles. I was wondering if the spring is just old and doesnt have tension so I was thinking of engaging the spring in the second plate hole to have it under more tension or, alternatively, I replace the spring.
Would buying older used 10 speed Ultegra derailleurs like this be a better option than a new Tiagra 10 speed derailleur if I'm willing to do a similar type of restoration? While I'm not really concerned about weight, I would prefer to have the older Ultegra or Dura Ace piece if it works better despite being older. There seem to be a lot of high-end used 9 and 10 speed parts around in his shape (you know, because they were expensive lol).
On jockey wheels, do you always use thick oil ? Or it depends on the bearing type ? I've been using grease lately and I wonder if it's wrong. Thanks !!!
Derailleurs don't really have "speeds" since they're not indexed, they just move as far as the cable is pulled. The shifter is the thing that determines if it's a 9, 10, 11, etc speed since it's the part that determines exactly how far the cable is pulled for every gear. As long as it's still a Shimano shifter with a Shimano RD (excluding Tiagra 4700 shifters which are apparently their own special thing) it should work fine. But if you've got 11 speed shifters then there isn't really any way to make that work with a 10 speed cassette.
The inward movement of the spring( larger spring for maintaning tension on the cassette alinement)....that is not working well. We have to push with our hand to make it move. Please, what could be problem
Might be that the main pivot spring is dirsty and gunked up. You could try taking off the cage, cleaning and re-greading it the same way as was done in the video. Hope that helps!
@@admiralarmchairfleet8403- I think you’re wrong. If you notice when he disassembled it, the groove open area goes on the facing outward. That’s so that the washer which is cupped fits inside of the gasket seals. I looked at the technical drawing as you mentioned, and it’s hard to tell the direction from those drawings. I disassembled mine for the first time and the flat side was definitely on the inside, allowing the washer lip to fit inside of the gasket seal like I described. This is an awesome video. Thank you very much for posting it.
@@condor5635 Ummm, that was not me but, it was Philadelphia's Son born between 1975 and 1979, @phillysson7579. Thanks Anyway, you made me re-watch the video. My parts are on top of a table now.
Everything was awesome until you used that cheap 'knock off' threadlocker! Loctite ( just like Shimano, who invented indexed shifting) invented the threadlocker. Given that you use a fair amount of grease on your re-assembly, Loctite thread lockers today are better formulated to resist oil on threads and cure properly vs knock off brands. A 'blue' coloured threadlocker is probably overkill for that bolt. (aka Loctite 243 or 242). So Loctite 222 (Europe) or 222MS (North America) is what I use. It's got a purple color and roughly half the removable strength of 243. Thanks again for the video. It will definitely come in handy.
I would like to know where you think you are going to get a new ultegra derailleurfor $20 usd. Rebuilding makes sense to me. Maybe not a tourney derailleur, but makes sense for ultegra.
This is so damn easy. I followed the steps and now I have a bag of parts instead of a derailleur!

Thanks to your help I was able to service my unit and install my aftermarket hanger (converting it to a long-cage)! Thanks from down in South Africa!

I love the little grease brushh
I love the fact that you show and explain each stage very clearly. Thanks.
What an amazing and detailed overhaul of the derailleur❤❤
Really appreciate your effort and detailed explanation in this video👍👍
Nice rainy-day project!

Wow, great video. I now want to put all my bits apart and rebuild them, even the new ones :D
Very useful and well made video, that explains the directional aspects of the smallest components. Superb piece of work.
Am Ende noch ein wenig Deutsch. Sehr schön. Nice Video. Thanks for that
I won't have to do this if I don't ride in the mud and rain. Good video convinced me to clean my drivetrain more often.
Well explained and smooth presentation-Everything perfect! Thanks a lot! ❤
Gratulacje. Again, a superb video.

My mech said there is no tension adjustment knob for the derailleur.
I would say the potential for having problems with the reassembly is a solid 5 out of 10.
Awesome! Precise work. A kind of meditation.
man i struggled a few wks back,... if only you released this last month...
I have 2 of these in my parts bin, both in good condition: a short cage and a medium cage. I use a long cage Deore.
Hello, when the XC season starts can you upload more race videos? Thx
Great video!
Great tutorial ... many thanks SickBiker 👍
more interested in learning how to remove the pin that hold the derailleur together. its a one way, not supposed to be disassembled. but...why not?

What is this potion you use to keep off dirt?
hey sickbiker, could you do other models of rd's?
I usually oiling all hinges also after soaking the whole mech in cleaning solution
What was the Anti-Mud-Protection in the end?
Excellent ~ Thank you
Perfect.
Hi, why you have changed the side of the washer clip that holds the main bolt of the derraulier? Thanks.
Gracias muy bueno el video aprendi cosasque no sabia
Pls do Alivio M4000 or Deore M592?! Thank you!
Great close-up video! How do you keep all those components organized for rebuild?!?
@cannondany Several people have asked already, what is the anti mud protection product you put on from 14.38? great video thankyou!
Big help. Thx
Nice ❤️
Looks easy but do not attempt to do it at home unless you're retired, very rich, never get mad easily...
hi are the tension spring and bolt from the cage is same as the rear derailluer 6800
Fantástico!!!
Awesome!
Sir can you use deore 5100 rear derailleur to a deore 12 speed cassette?

Did the derrailleur had tension before you disassembled it?
@@carlosaguirre9643 I have not dissembled it yet. I realized the deraileur has trouble shifting one way but not the other way.

When you see the engineering complexity involved, you can understand why they're so expensive

don't use grease for jockey wheels; use a bit of light oil wiped on the bushings.
is there a way to change the shifting ratio of a 11speed rd to work with 10 speed cassette?

Can you make one for 90% of public. I mean for the poor me. Shimano Tourney RD. Thanks!
They aren't built to be disassembled, I'm afraid. Some Tourneys won't even let you replace the guide pulley wheel.
€20 for a New one. Why bother.
Cool B-)
At 13.40 you've put the pulley gasket seals in back to front. Flat side of seal faces outwards, lipped side faces inwards. Check Shimano Docs.
@Phillys Son, Where did you find the Shimano Service Document? I'm about to rebuild my 6700-GS. Thanks.
@Kensuke do a Google search for
shimano 6700-GS tech docs. In the first few results you'll see a two page document from ManualsLib.
