3:02 Well, 90-something out of 123 players weren't at OU before he arrived, so yeah I'd say he really tore it down and started from as close to scratch as you could get.
Not to mention some of the upgrades and stuff to the current facilities and what-not.

It might. Joining the SEC makes it harder and the current 12 team playoff format will give 6 automatic bids to “conference champions”. Like many SEC schools a 1-3 loss OU will get surpassed for about 2-3 of those automatic bids and/or 1 loss teams from lesser conferences.
The SEC expansion will be hurt by this until they remove “automatic bids”.

As a Clemson fan, I missed him the second he left for OU. But that's a top 3 job in college football. I hope he does a fantastic job. Guy barely had half a football team last year after Riley took them all to USC. I agree with giving him 4 years to get his players then see what he creates.

As a long time OU fan, what often is overlooked by so many when thinking about the 6-7 season of 22 is how OU was on a decline ever since Lincoln Riley took over. Year-after-year, on almost every metric, they were getting worse. There were so many games we almost lost against teams we should have dominated.
Just look at the first game of LR's last season, against the Green Wave of Tulane. OU BARELY squeaked by with a W after struggling all game - that was just the start of a REALLY rough season. LR inherited a great program, drove it into the rocks but bailed before it hit. Coach V took over, hit the rocks but sees exactly what to change, how to change it and has the right approach.
It's only a matter of time before everyone else learns what we Oklahoman's already know. Coach V is going to be a legendary Head Coach!!

What a load of BS. Lincoln Riley just wasn't enough of a hick for the trash segment of the OK fan base. That, and he left. Inferiority complexes can cause a fury. You can cherry pick individual games, but the fact remains that Stoops last five years he went 51-14. Riley went 55-10. None of that says anything about Venables. He deserves some slack as a first time head coach in the first season, but it has nothing to do with a "decline ever since LR took over."

@@echt114 you're so full of it your eyes are brown. That kind of nasty, degrading bigotry about anyone makes people vomit. Haven't you got any manners at all? Muleshoe was just as hick and red behind the neck as anyone. You make him sound like a silk stocking top-hat wearing fancy pimp from New Orleans. He's a jake-leg from the sticks... Muleshoe, Texas is right in the middle of nowhere.
The man didn't know any of his defensive players except probably by the number on the kid's jersey. No, TBOW tried to sell that manure that he had learned of the "opening" after the game when in fact his agent had been talking to the University of Spoiled Children from the day they fired their head coach.
Muleshoe will fit right in with USC; all bluster and flash, but not prepared to play smash-mouth football with a team like Utah.
A man has the right to change jobs; it's how he does it that reveals whether he has any class or not. Muleshoe raided the Sooners, probably negotiated with the Trojans that he could package his recruits and take them with him. That's being a real scumbag. Not only sneak away in the dark before anyone sees him, but he strips the program of key players to feather his nest out west. That's about as low rent as a man can get. Muleshoe's not a man of his word. You got to watch a guy like that because he's the type that cheats at cards.

His staff seem, SEEM to be very good evaluators. Needs to learn to be more succinct. But anyway, he'll remain a favorite of mine even if he dosen't make it. The issue at OU has been, for awhile a toxic, underachieving culture on defense. Go back and just watch the film. Not just lack of talent, but a real lack of effort. OU will be MUCH better this year. Venables said during media days that 97 of the 123 players on Oklahoma's roster now are in their 1st or 2nd year with the program. That is 78.9% of the players that were not there in 2021. That is Deion at Colorado type of numbers, it just took 2 years instead of 1.
I also have all of the confidence in him, but progress needs to be demonstrated. With as terrible and easy as this schedule is, anything less than 9 wins is cause for serious concern.

people see 6-7 and just say OKLAHOMA AND BRENT VENABLES WONT WORK. it needs context. first off theres no fault in losing to TCU last year. that was a VERY good football team. also losing to texas was not as bad as it seems because we didnt have our starting QB, and we didnt have a competent backup. also our defense was pretty good in spurts. why was in spurts and not all the time? Because we lacked depth on the defensive side of the ball. we were getting gassed by the 4th quarter and thats why we lost so many leads. brent made some coaching mistakes like leaving some freshman out because they didnt know the complex play book yet. it was a bad situation, that being said we were 12 points away from being 10-2. i know most sooners fan remember this, but why do you think oklahoma wasnt opening the playbook hardly at all until week 4? Because no one knew the playbook. everyone was talking about why they didnt open the playbook that much. now we know. it all makes sense looking back at it now. fast foward to now, ive heard multiple players say top 5 defense. if that happens, that would be the biggest turnaround ever.

I get so sick of hearing Texas fans yell out 49-0. I get it, it was a huge win for you guys over your biggest rival (presently). Truth be told, our quarterback was concussed from a dirty hit the previous week and our backups were so bad we marched out the wildcat with our TE as QB thinking that was our best shot to win that game. That's how depleted our roster was and how we had zero backup plan for when/if DG got hurt. I think BV is going to be just fine and I think this year you will see big strides out of the program.

I think as long as he doesn’t have a bad season this year (they won’t with such a cupcake schedule), he can slowly develop into more of a HC and not a DC thrust into a HC position.
OU this year is hard to figure out as they again will struggle on both LOS with an average OL (likely worse) and similar average at best DL. Against teams like Texas (OL & DL), KSU (OL), Kansas (OL), & maybe TT (DL) they will likely struggle to varying degrees.

Not to mention people have watched every game and realize that Oklahoma played 600 and some consecutive snaps in a row without the other team getting a holding call when you can call holding on every down for either team... But yet I've seen Oklahoma get several touchdown called back in several of those games we lost as well because of a holding call but yet the other team never got one... Without all that b******* corruption I believe Oklahoma would have been 10-2 or at worse 9-3...

Listen, Lincoln Riley is an elite playcaller. Great OC. Great QB coach. But he struggled as a HC. Facts are facts. The program, although recruiting got better and better, statistically got worse and worse. He got rid of Jerry Schmidt and pushed him out. Not a surprise when aTm got him they were competing with Bama shortly after. Riley brought in the king of P90X and OU's OL/DL was getting pushed around more and more the further away from Bob Stoops's/Jerry Schmidt's era we got. I think that's been fixed by hiring JS back. Let me leave you with this so you can understand how ridiculous OU's S&C was under Lincoln Riley(and likely still is at USC). We didn't have 1. I repeat, NOT one OL that could bench over 300 prior to BV joining last year. They looked really fit. They were agile as all get-out, but they were NOT strong. Think back to guy's like Orlando Brown when they went to Pro Day. I think he had 16 reps at 225 or something. Was ridiculous. And embarrassing. That's because of the S&C program. OU was getting worse and worse under Riley. The only saving grace was his elite QBs. It's the ONLY thing that kept OU going. BV didn't even have that as OU had to completely rebuild the QB room(not a scholarship guy remained when Lincoln left).
