Step Inside This 160 year old Abandoned Country Doctors House Down South in North Carolina

- This beautiful old town house was built in the late 1800’s in a small coastal southern town. Before hospitals and large medical centers doctors would typically work from home or an office in town. This place would serve as both for a man who actually was a doctor and veteran of the American civil war. Settling in this small once thriving railroad town in the late 1800’s. The house would remain in his family until the 1920’s and then before the Great Depression it was used briefly as a hotel. Then for a few decades it was turned into a rental home until ultimately being left forgotten between 1990-2000. My apologies for the neighbors popping off, listen with the sound lowered if loud noises aren’t your thing. Thanks for watching! Like and leave a comment if you enjoyed! Thank you!
That item hanging on the wall you didn't know what it was, its for gas lights
How cool! Thanks for the info and watching!! :)
@@urbanexploringwithkappy1773 They were called carbide lights.
After seeing all that this house has to offer all I can say is; I hope someone saves that organ. Piano too. Thank you Kappy. I always look forward to Saturdays because of you.
That is Tiger oak wood, typical wood used in the 1900s. Beautiful doors. Another great adventure Kappy.
You are correct!
The tiger Wood is quite beautiful.
We get a lot of quarter sawed white oak.
This pattern isn't found in all or even most oak but it's not uncommon.
It's still beautiful and desired today.
Good eye!
That looks like fake tiger wood to me on those upstairs doors and trim.
@@khanysafan1705 Really? I highly doubt that it’s fake wood giving the age of house.
@@veronicamorgan8103faux bois was very popular in the 1800s.That was very fake done by an amateur.
Can anyone tell me why someone would up and walk away from a beautiful house like this!!!? ANYONE?
Wow what a beautiful old home! Why don’t people want to preserve history? Hurt’s my heart too see theses homes left to decay! Wonderful video Kappy! ❤️😢🤘👍
I would like to know where the house is located. How long has it been abandoned?
@@cristalwatts2018 he never tell’s exact location! I’m not sure how long it has been abandoned. Such a shame this once beautiful home has been left to decay!
Because it takes a ton of cash
Sadly would take a lot of money to restore this place and it’s in a very rural area! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
Both houses were stunning. Both seem like they can be saved, persevered. Just love going back in time.
I NEVER UNDERSTOOD how someone could come into a home that isn't theirs, and just TRASH IT!!!! Who manufactures people like that?! The area is BREATHTAKING though!!!! If I had the money, I'd tear it down, (put it out of its misery) and rebuild a BEAUTIFUL COLONIAL STYLE HOME!!!! Thanks for taking us along Kappy!!!!
Beautiful old houses!! The old houses had such charm. Today's homes can never compare. The people in the second house sure like color!!
So sad! Someone should restore this beautiful place
These old abandoned houses can be renovated to beautiful homes! it's heartbreaking to see all the damages and mess without anyone doing anything about it!
Oh my Lord another fantastic production and you are right what a cool place this old doctor doctors house is. Like I have said before, keep up the great work. Please be careful when exploring places like this on your own. Rob from Australia
My heart enjoys these homes as precious time capsules, I’m intrigued ! Thank you Kappy
Much appreciated for watching!! :)
The wall colors in those houses were pretty bold. And I remember when those ceiling borders became popular again in the 1980s/1990s!
I sure hope someone finds a way to save that organ in the first house. Even if they can’t get it working again, it’s still a masterful work of art!
Finally, thanks for taking one for the team in the midst of those gunshots! Nice little jump-scare in this video! 😊😁
Two awsome places and the second one was starting to be restored and they quit so sad
WOW THAT PIANO! Awesome find! 😊😊😊
Hey Kappy. Great explores! Thanks. ✌️
Thank ya very much for watching!! :)
my grandma she had a ornate pump organ much the same as that one played it Sundays in our Methodist chapel taught me music
I would absolutely love to find an old home in that good of shape and buy it , restore it and make it a home again.
Urbex Exploring with kappy thanks for sharing with me this video about Step Inside This 160 year old Abandoned Country Doctors House Down South in North Carolina it was a really cool Explore and i can't wait to see your next Explore and God Bless.
Wow that piano is nice too and that house is just wild I love the door and the windows the mantals are very very nice shape
I liked that first house, a lot. Porch, fireplaces and big windows, always a win for me. Looks like it was taken care of pretty well until recently. Second place sure was bigger inside than it looked from the outside. So much stuff left behind, though. Think it was nice before the stuff and, technicolor paint. Thanks, Kappy
Me too! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
Surprised, outside, so, so, now inside, Gorgeous. So hope house gets restored. LOL, 7:37. at 1st, thought Kappy caught a ghost in mirror..
Thank you Kappy Buddy. Love it when you do 2 for 1. Take Care Friend 🤗
Glad you enjoy!! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
The first is worth saving. Just checked underneath the house. Stabilized the house and replace the floor. What you saw on the last bedroom. They had natural gas lighting at one time. The second house is also a keeper. Check under the house and replace the flooring.
The fake wood grain on the wood is done with stainand a metal comb looking thing, watched my uncle who was a painter do it when I was a kid, I’m currently 72 now.
Beautiful Houses thank you♥️
Thanks for another great video Kappy. Loved the first house, cool layout, woodwork, doors (especially the front). Really enjoy your exportations.
Thank you very much for the kind words and watching!! :)
I ducked for you when I heard the shots being fired!😂
I appreciate it lol thanks for watching!! :)
Me too! I think Kappy is much more stoic than I could have been. I woulda pulled an ol’ Scooby Doo and hightailed it outta there!
That pump organ is a beauty ❤
What a beautiful homes!
Love both houses they are beautiful but I like the second one that one can be save both houses have beautiful staircases the second house looks like it have gotten new pipes because of the red and blue pipes. Great video kappy and a safe weekend.
Exceptional place!!!🔆🔆🔆🔆
Thank you for watching!! :)
Love the beaded board ceilings and bright colors. The walls appeared to have a 1980s vibe. Was there not a kitchen in the first house? I must have missed it. Also, it looked like just one half bath. I guess they must have used the old #3 tub!
That wall thing at 8:35 is the original gas light fixture
The organ itself should be saved. Too bad about the foundation. Awesome places Kap👍
Happy Saturday Kappy!! Thank you again for showing us these two amazing houses!! I love the first one, the fireplaces, and that organ!! Just a quaint home with so much possibility. I love picturing how it would have looked back in the day. I love the second one more on the outside than the inside, but amazing nonetheless. Thank you again! Have an amazing weekend!!!
✌️❤️
Great video, thank you!
Thank you very much for watching!! :)
Wow Thanks !!
At 8.33 thats a gaslight fitting (some have recognised! back@1880s wealthy folks could light with kerosinne Oil lamps, or ELECTRIC !!! wow, also gas they had a "generator" which dripped water onto carbide to get acteline gas! there was ALSO PETROLIUM GAS!!! had a pressure tank delivering gasoline thru very small copper pipes to the light fittings happy days!
Enjoyed
I would have loved to had saved the old organ as those are rare to come by anymore and when found in such a beautiful condition such as that they are worth thousands . Also the mystery thing on the wall in the second bedroom upstairs could have been a gas lamp….otherwise what a neat old place the first one …the second one was huge ….rooms were unbelievably big…
These homes are typical for small rural towns here in eastern NC. I don't see why the first home can't be saved. The floor in the front room probably can be fixed by it being jacked up and have sistering the joists be done. The second home has always been my style of dream house. Despite today's economy, I have faith that I can one day live in a home like that. I just need to have patience and work hard to save my money up.
Loved this house think it could be saved
Both houses look like there in pretty good shape could be fixed up. Just a shame they're left to rot when there are so many homeless.
What's the story on the 2nd house? Obviously squatters have been there, but it was very interesting to see. Thank you for the video!! Stay safe!!
Fun to see- thank you- Was concerned about you getting hit by a stray bullet though- yikes!
I appreciate it! I’m all good! Thank you for watching!! :)
That wood isn't painted, it's oak chosen for its grain pattern.
Another one I recognize and been to myself several times..that organ was insane tho! Your videos got me missing NC like crazy lol! Good stuff as always!
Nothing like North Carolina! Thank you very much for watching man!! :)
Why do I always expect to hear a loud *CRASH!* as pianos/organs fall through collapsing floors? 😀
Surely, both of these houses can be saved.
Hey happy I love ur videos just wandering have u ever fell thru a floor while exploring one of these old houses?
Yes plenty of times! Even fell thru while videoing one in Georgia i believe! Thanks for watching! :)
Just from experience that organ dates from 1870 to 1885 , very Victorian indeed !!
Waaaau 💯🤩🤩🤩🤩
I actually like the 2nd house better, but both houses could be restored.
The front door is sealed shut with long screws drilled into the door frame and is latched shut. He did not come through the front door.🤔
fire places are very art deco looking possibly a remodel during 1930's ?
What was that door to the right of the mantle in the upstairs red bedroom?
I often wonder what the deal is with these abandoned homes. Could you just take one over and claim squatter's rights? If you wanted to buy it, how would you figure out who owns it?
Seems like a lot of abandoned homes sit too close to a busy road. Would have to have a lot of soundproofing. That’s perhaps why they are abandoned. Or the owners can’t afford what it would take to restore them.
After doing some research there is very little interest in antique organs unfortunately , find out who owns it Kappy and offer a $100 , clean the wood and use bees wax polish and it will be beautiful again , if you can get it working it may be worth a grand to the right person
Any way to know when it was last lived in?
I wish you would name the state
Look at the title of the video lol! Thanks for watching
You lied, no 4k
....'that' was an old gas lamp....
I don't understand how an owner can just let a house deteriorate. If you inherited it, a d don't want it, sell it. Don't let to waste away.
I agree, however,
life brings unexpected
illnesses, and deaths,
leaving good intentions to hit the wayside, sadly.
Additionally, some folks think relatives will desire what you willed, and/or entrusted them, and it's sometimes not what they ever wanted to own.
WOW! That first house, with the wrap-around porch is so quaint! Sad to see these historic places just melting back into nature.
7:55 if I recall correctly, that's called tiger oak due to its natural striping. It's not painted.
8:32 appears to be a gas lantern that was added after the fact, which would explain the piping coming up inside the room, rather than buried in the wall.
That organ should be saved and restored. It's a piece of art. Wish I lived in that area. I'd be finding the owners to get it.
the organ would date between 1870 and 1921, according to wiki. I agree, it deserves to be saved.
It’s not even worth 300 bucks
@@ihave35cents95 Antiques are worth whatever someone is willing to pay. $300? Probably, for now. Depends on condition, location, and interest. I've gone to auctions and been shocked at what things go for.
The entire house should be saved and restored
@@trollhunter6934 better have a ton of dough
The thing you wondered about looked to me like a gas light. I lived in a old house that had pipes like that hidden under the floor& behind walls. When converted to electric the lamp part was changed to an electric wall sconce. Wire ran to switch at the bedroom entrance. Thanks for sharing your adventures!💙
dered
I think it’s an old gas lamp in that upstairs bedroom. What a cool find!!! One can see how glorious this house must have been in its day, not super fancy but obviously built with care & pride!!
painted wood trim to look like tiger oak upstairs and down- excellent examples of what's called "comb painting "- historic early American painting skill still used today.
Actually its the worst examples I’ve ever seen of faux bois
Great old homes, and bet the kids had a time sliding down the banisters. Still wonder what people are thinking when they use these paint colors! Thanks, Kappy!
My husband said the wood on the fireplace and door is quarter sawn oak. The way it’s cut exposes the medullary rays. He’s a wood guy.
It’s painted to look like that
Breakfast and a vid! Ty Kappy! Holy moly I didn't expect gun shots!! Both houses were really nice. B safe out there.
Great video! That pipe on the wall in the 2nd bedroom of the first house was for a gas light.
Very nice Kappy. I love seeing the antiques and mantles left behind. It’s like opening up a time capsule. Thanks so much Kappy for another amazing find. Can’t wait for the next one. 😊
Another beauty looks like could be lived in
Thank you so much always for the kind words and watching! Couldn’t show these places without you awesome people! Thank you! :)
That organ is a truly a work of art and should be preserved at all cost! I have a feeling that several families lived there after the doctor did, they probably moved all their belongings in and arranged them around the organ and piano. I'm guessing the white keys on both the organ , and the piano are made from ivory. How nice to see such a grand place that hasn't been vandalized... yet...
My God !
Somebody has got to get into the first house and restore that organ and piano !
They may be from the early 1900's but they are beautiful !
What a bloody shame !
And save the mantels and doors and screen doors. Breaks my heart. Thanks for showing us these wonderful homes.
8:35 Carbide gas lighting . This means there is an old gas carbide generator somewhere on the property . They were usually placed in the ground .
At first I thought that was tiger oak on the trim and fireplaces, but when you showed the close up of the door it's easy to see it was faux wood grain. I've seen that done in other old houses but had forgotten all about it. They take plain wood and varnish it, and while the varnish is still wet they drag tools through it to create a wood grain effect. Beautiful house, love the staircase and banisters, and the bright and open layout. Nice old Southern belle. Another one where a metal roof saved it, could be restored.
Oh if the walls could talk. Enjoyed seeing the beautiful wood, bead wood and other architectural designs. That looked like an old trunk lying on the floor. Thanks for the tour.
What an amazing old house 🏚. Love the staircase and fireplace. Thanks for sharing have a good day 😊. ❤❤
Thank you for the kind words and watching!! :)
Before the TV was the radio. Before the radio was the piano. People used to gather around the piano in the evening like people watch TV now.
That pump organ is beautiful should be saved definitely..
Kappy, I enjoy your videos, especially since I have lived in North Carolina my whole life. Small towns in Eastern NC are drying up; not many young people want to move here; I grew up here and love it here!
I googled the organ. A picture of that exact organ popped up.
1879-1921
In 1900 they were producing 8000 units per year.
Value at most $500
Average from auctions is less than $100
Would love to have it restored and in my living room nonetheless.
@@suzannesnyder2679 me too..very fancy looking decoration
Wow that’s shocking!! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
Good morning Kappy... What a beauty, have a great day ! 😍
If those houses get torn down without salvaging some of those beautiful architectural features, I will lose my faith in humanity.
Walking away from those homes shows how far down the slippery slopes we've already gone!
My grandmother had a pump organ similar to the one shown here. I never saw anyone play it, so it leaves me to believe that it was originally owned by my great grandmother. She was insane, but she was kept at home, I remember her quite well, she terrified me because she was rather wild acting and could get violent at the drop of a hat. She wore high neck blouses, long floor length dresses with petticoats underneath and hook shoes and her hair pulled back in a bun. The odd fixture in the upstairs room is as someone said is a gas lamp, they became common fixtures in many houses before electricity. I was born in and still live in North Carolina, the landscape is dotted with abandoned houses and other structures.
Two great houses. The doctor's house was a real charmer in its day. All the fire places were awesome. I love the woodwork. I always enjoy seeing the old pump organs and pianos. Often they're left behind because of their weight. Some fifty years ago I had a playerpiano. It was heavier than I ever expected and like so many other people I had to leave it behind because it was too heavy to move. That pump organ is stunning. I bet with a little elbow grease and repairing the bello's it would come to life once again.
I was really surprised as to how big the second house was. It certainly didn't look that way from the outside. Two great houses and another wonderful adventure. Thanks Kappy, for bringing us along 🤠👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Those circular “cups” on either side of the organ/piano are for candles.
How neat! Thanks for sharing the info! :)
This house appears to be very late 19th or early 20th century... The wood work is grain painted... The central front hall (stairway) has had a wall removed making an open plan... The fixture on the wall upstairs is a gas light with the striker still attached but missing its glass shade... This could have been carbide... My Tennessee farmhouse still has some carbide lighting in place... The red brick fireplaces are fairly modern rebuilt...
The second house looks 1920s to 1940... I like the rim (surface mounted) locks on all the doors...
Thank you Kappy for showing us these 2 beautiful homes. The first one would have been grand in her days.
That is a gas light fixture at 8:34 in the video. The woodwork in the house is most likely pine with a faux finish using glaze and varnish to make it look like quarter sawed oak...the faux graining would have been done using a comb and feather.
Such a shame that beautiful organ will end up falling through the floor and rotting. It should be in a museum.
I had no idea there were so many old plantation homes left standing. Who owns them now?
Thanks Kappy for showing this beautiful old house.
Thank you very much for watching!! :)
That wouldn't be a fireplace. It's a brick barrier for a wood burning stove/heater. Great video. Thanks.
It seems like the old paint they used in the older days ALONE destroyed homes , no one could keep up with such large projects of scraping it all off and repainting ,
It sounded like the neighbors didn't want you rooting around. You're a brave guy indeed, Kappy!!!
Yeah that was strange, Kappy edited just after the shots fired.
They were just two young guys, probably younger than me just goofing around, had to make sure they weren’t shooting at me, that’s why I cut it there lol thanks for watching!
Odd that the first house had painted woodwork on the first floor and natural upstairs. Usually it's the other way around.
Just what I needed! A couple of beautiful old homes toured by Mr Kappy! I always love watching! I think my favorite was the second house. Even though the 2nd one was trashed, I love the layout. Both are awesome! That bright yellow kitchen! Another great video Mr Kappy! Thanks for taking me along!
Thank you very much for the kind words and watching!! I really appreciate it! :)
Two beauties Kappy. Another hit with the radar.kve the paint peel and the staircases. Beauties. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😊
