  • We take a look at the How to Engraving books in the fields unrelated to jewelry work.
First we cover the ubiquitous The Art of Engraving, by James B. Meek, first published by Brownells in 1973. Next we cover the Neil Hartliep book, the Basics of Firearms Engraving, published by the NRA in 1985. Last we look into the many pages of the John Schippers book Historical Firearms Engraving published in 2013. We also make a “small” mention of the Jim Small book How to Make Knives that has a small engraving section in it.

I have all of those books and my assessment of each is the same as Scott's. The Schippers book, though the most costly, is the very best for any beginner or intermediate. The illustrations are the best and most explanatory of any how to book about hand engraving.

I as well started engraving in 1981. Took a gun engraving week long class at Gem City College that was based on Neil’s technique.... I had to relearn it the correct way when I Got to apprentice to Master Engraver Cesario (Rino) Greco from Belgium in 1987 for about 7 months. Nothing compares to one on one training. I have many copies of the original engraving patterns from FN Browning that he gave me. I also have used a gravermiester everyday since 1981. They are work horses. Thanks for the video.

Who taught that class at Gem City? I would love see some scans of all those FN patterns.

Quality has no regrets George Mereck was the instructor. He had went through Neil’s class at Trinidad. I don’t know whatever happened to him..if he continued engraving or not. The engraver I apprenticed to Rino apprenticed UN Louis Vranken & Felix Fuuken. I’ve got pictures and photocopies of a lot of their work.

@@cdeichhorn I am the historian of the engravers guild. I have been asked to authenticate a few guns by Rino Greco. I would like to know as much as you can tell me about him for my records. At present, I only have the brief information from one of the Mario Abbaitico books.

Your helpful video is effective. I had no idea the last book existed, but certainly must add it to my engraver's library!

It’s too bad the images are so blurry from low light.

Do you think this book is necessary if I have an MFA? I’m very comfortable make ‘art’, it’s just the engraving I don’t know.
