I think what I find most inspiring about going through Uri's catalogue of videos is seeing that you really can produce fine work even with 'rudimentary' equipment - here Uri is the one moving around the piece held in a normal vice. Later on he gets a 'proper' engraver's ball-vice which allows him to stay in place and spin the work around instead. Same results - only difference is the craftsman's comfort (and I'm guessing the years of skill acquired 'doing it the hard way' first). I dunno. I find it really encouraging. Thank you Uri.

Hello my good friends! I'm really happy to see that you enjoy this video. I just want to mention that I've ended up sharpening the face of the Chisel closer to 45 degrees and the heel at around 17 degrees. That produced the best results for me.

If I remember rightly I ordered them from Hong Kong (on ebay). Yes, they did take a while to get here. I can't say with certainty that they are indeed hss , since I don't have the expertise to confirm, but they definitely have the feel and the hardness of a hss, especially when I tried, in previous attempts, to heat treat them I realize that its not your ordinary High carbon steel. if you can get your hands on some O1 tool steel that would work just as well.

I don't know how I've missed your video's for so long, but I think you under state your abilities. An amateur wouldn't understand the cutting finish to the angle of the face of the tool, as you do. By watching you, and I certainly don't understand it yet, I am closer. I have tried this before with great frustration for not understanding said relationship and I quit. now I think I may try again.

Manishma Uri! I love your work, I’ve seen all your videos, very impressive. You’ve actually inspired me to try engraving for the first time, thank you for that.
Also, when you speak of getting the scrollwork “symmetrical” and “curvier”, the concept (I believe) you’re speaking of is known as “fairing a curve”. A proper, aesthetically pleasing curve is said to be a “fair curve”. The easiest way I know to fair a curve is to look at your work from eye level. At that vantage point it is much easier to see where the curve is going “off”.
Thanks again and keep up the great work, friend.

Your hands are as good as any, use them. I started my trade at 16 and qualified at 19, did all the work after school and on weekends. Then went on to study MechEng and built a decent career. But I always miss this, the simple pleasure of creative creation. Go, go do it, find a semi hard stick and make a handle, use a drill bit for a graver (it says hss on the shank). You go do kid! I did jobs in my school clothes that made grown men super upset when my dad charged them for it ("but, the kid just did it, why you charging me??..) my dad replied: "as quickly as that kid did it, he can undo it". Beg, borrow, but don't steal and practice.
