Perhaps one day someone will make a song or a movie about Vincent's sister-in-law Johanna. Devoted brother Theo financed Vincent out of his meagre salary right up until his tragic death. When Vincent shot himself Theo was devastated and died of a broken heart six months later. He was buried next to his brother. Theo left a widow and a son (who was also called Vincent). Joanna was now a single mother with no income. Such a future is difficult today but in the 1890's it was disastrous. No income support back then right? All she had was Vincent's paintings which the art world considered as nothing but amateur daubs. However, even so, poor brave Joanna spent the rest of her life telling the world of Vincent's work. It was only when she was much older did the British National Gallery finally recognise Van Gogh's genius and began negotiating with Johanna in purchasing some of Vincent's paintings. Therefore we can assume the paintings shown in the Dr Who episode are those purchased directly from her. I think it is wonderful that Vincent's works are so admired today but it also saddens me that history overlooks that it takes dedicated people to get the world to take notice. Make no mistake, without the sacrifice of Joanna Van Gogh, no one would ever have heard the name of Vincent Van Gogh. Personally I think it is on time we started tell history from a wider perspective. No genius would be a genius without the sacrifice of those behind them.
Okay its just the way they did this episode just made everyone love Vincent so quickly. Then the doctor and amy did an act of genuine kindness for him, as it was known that actual vincent always thought noone liked his work. So when in doctor who he found out that people everywhere knew and loved his work, it was such a heart warming moment.
Episode kills me everytime... Vincent Van Gogh is my hero and this whole thing just... kills me because he didn't have the Doctor or Amy to help him even a little bit...

Even before I watched "Doctor Who" for the first time; I'd always wondered whether or not Vincent Van Gogh was "bipolar" (especially with the whole self-mutilating issue, where he apparently cut off his ear). After watching these episodes of "Doctor Who", though, it convinced me that he MUST have been a bit bipolar (or maybe he was a bit like me & had Asperger's Syndrome, considering how misunderstood he was & quite-literally alienated from other people). I guess we'll never know for sure, but I'm convinced he had some kind of mood/behavioural disorder that wasn't properly diagnosed. I think the "Doctor Who" series expressed him fairly accurately, though. I only wish life had treated the poor man better & I'm amazed that he managed to paint such beautiful canvasses; despite how cruelly he suffered... 🎨 💔 😢
As someone who has bipolarity disorder, I can totally see where you're coming from. Around one year after I got my diagnose and few weeks after I started therapy, I had to give a presentation about van Gogh and his paintings for art class - and through the reasearch a lot of things hit home! We will never know what exactly haunted this poor man, but the thought that he might have gone through similiar pain I am right now and tried to capture the beauty of life, gives me strengh to move on too. Especially after reading some of his letters to his brother about his world view, I feel like I can't give in and no matter how hard it might be, I should give my best to see the things worth living for through all the hardships. Van Gogh has been my hero ever since. And I like to think the he would be happy knowing he enabled someone to live their life head on. Damn, crying again.
Doctor Who has a strange way about it. It is able to make you cry and laugh at the same time. it has amazing music. It has an amazing team of writers. But it's my favorite show. it even goes above House of Cards. It's number one

Usually I pretend to be a tough girl who seldom cries for tv drama because I know it is NOT true. But this…I can't act like I'm not impressed at all. I just can't. I wish I could give Vincent a hug and told him that he is not the only treasures his paintings.😭
I just saw that scene in the museum with Vincent for the first time yesterday. I daresay that it might be the best arrangement, dialogue and choreography of any scene in a TV show, ever. Even the acting was so spot on. Vincent's weeping was just what it should be --- only slightly overwhelming to him -- but almost entirely overwhelming to the viewer. My compliments on the arrangement editing you put together in this video. You nailed it as well!

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the truly best artists and everyone said "haha screw you you're art doesn't exist" and only his doctor, brother, nephew, and sister and law really cared about him... He was the best artist of his time truly.

I have yet to watch all episodes of Doctor Who, but it is one of my favorites that I've seen, and likely will remain so. (": I'm soon to purchase a biography on Vincent Van Gogh that I saw around this time last year, "Van Gogh: The Life" by Steven Naifeh. It looks to be a good biography of Mr. Van Gogh, so that's exciting to get to learn about this man more!
