I think this song is a song about realization and disillusionment. There is just so much self-disappointment in this world. People who have hero's that they'll never be, kids who set sights on becoming something simply because there's a person out there that they want to be like, and if they fail at becoming that person, they feel like they, themselves are a failure, when there are other things that they would be so much better at. And in reality, not everyone needs to be big. I believe we tell our descendants the biggest and most damaging lie when we say "This world was built on the shoulders of giants." No, no it wasn't, this world has, is, and forever will be built on the backs of men and women. Do you think Isaac Newton would have been a great Physicist and Mathematician if he hadn't had a house? Do you think Albert Einstein would have been able to develop his Theory of Relativity if there hadn't been a school teacher to teach him the basics of Math when he was a child. Do you think Jack Andraka, the boy who developed a new and cheaper, and more accurate way of detecting cancer would have been able to do so, if farmers weren't around to provide food? Or if Seamstress's weren't around to make clothing? No, none of today's world would be here if it weren't for the working class. There are plenty of kids who have normal ambitions, but are told to bolster them, because if you aren't shooting for the top, it isn't worth it. But if everyone shoots for the stars, who's going to be left on earth?
We should celebrate the Isaac Newtons, and the Albert Einsteins, and the Jack Andraka's of the world, but, in the same breath, we shouldn't forget about the unnamed brick-layers, construction worker, farmers and seamstress's of the world either, for they are the reason that the Newtons, and the Einsteins, and the Andraka's can do what they do.

The kids' actions are clearly shown in a good light. In some way this makes sense, because their are questioning their parents rules. On the other hand they are just copying what the awols are doing, which leads to a complete obliteration of the furniture. Are they doing the right thing or not?
***** Personally, I think that pertains more "The Status Quo" more than a dilemma of "Right and Wrong."
The songs basest message is "The Status Quo should change." And I think the kids are the symbolism that not all changes can or will be good, but the fact that the Status Quo did changes is good in and of itself.
Because the video could have just as easily been about the kids hearing this, and then throwing out their toys, instead of destroying them, donning business wear, and going to look for actual work, rather than the smarmy chores parent's tell their kids to go beg for money from other people by promising to do said chores.

Watching him perform this song is hilarious. Saw him live and half way through the song he almost tripped into the mic. At 1:55 he says "well the sun will one day leave us all behind....explainable sightings in the sky" and as he says it there is eerie music playing in the background which is in contrast to the happy "Mr. Rogers" friendly music. Just thought it was weird, this part of the song strikes a chord with me and I don't know why. Also in the music video of the song Sail he is portrayed as a conspiracy theorist that is being chased and captured by what is hinted as aliens (and Illuminati) what does he know that we don't?
So, a couple years ago I decided this was the perfect soon to listen in loop while going back home from the city I'm studying in, the day my Grandpa died, because my mind tough "hey, and old man dying on a train seems fitting here".
