The song is about Never giving up. Don't let the people you look up and the people who will come after you decide how good you are. You are good enough. Kill your heroes means don't have heroes be your own hero. Don't let fear rule your life do what you love and know that there are people who will always love you no matter how many times you fail or think about giving up. Just keep going cause the only thing that's stopping you is yourself. You have your whole life to accomplish the things you want as long as you don't hold yourself up in a metaphorical room. Live your life , be happy and don't give up. People love you more than you know.

This song helped me through some tough times, in 2012 I moved schools and didn't have any friends I stayed home all day other than school. During the summer I never left the house, this got me depressed just watching T.V all day everyday my life felt dull I got worse and worse my vision seemed off like my depression was making everything feel fake. I found this song on the front page of reddit once o listens to it I felt normal and happy again, I got a girlfriend and was happy again. Now I'm in highschool and I was trying to figure out the same to this song, I'm glad my 13yr old self was smart enough to add this song to my favorites list. I will never forget this song

this song isn't sad, people, it's saying to stop trying to emulate people and go your own way; don't live your life trying to be someone, i.e. "your hero". It's a great message. One of my favorite songs ever.

This song is everything "yolo" wishes it was--and I mean that in the best possible sense. They're both supposed to be about abandoning inhibition and doing what you love, but the term yolo has unfortunately become synonymous with abandoning reason to do something stupid. Whatever, at least we still have this song.

I heard this song on tv on some surfing show, I immediately got up typed the lyrics I would hear into Google so I could find the song. This song instantly joins the list of songs I will forever play every time I think about em
All these years later and this song still resonates with me in a way I have a hard time explaining. My sister in law once asked why I liked a song with such depressing lyrics. At the time I didn't have a good answer but I think the wisdom of years since have clarified some things for me and now I have a fairly simple answer.
If you separate the song lyrics from the music they feel almost entirely unrelated. The music itself is very upbeat and optimistic sounding, while the lyrics describe the inevitability of death. When you combine the two parts you are given a song that is optimistic in the face of life's most depressing aspects. It becomes an anthem about overcoming the fear of life itself. "Kill your heroes" is a metaphor for taking back control of your life. So instead of being a bystander, you can be your own hero! It really is the PB&J of songs. Just the right amount of sweet and salty.
Definitely AWOLNATION'S best song! Why have I only just found it?! And why has it only got 7 million views?!

This song has a meaning behind it that I find pretty interesting.
You see, the main point of the song (in my opinion) is about not trying to be like the person next to you or to be a copy of a person that you find to be more of what you are. People would call it inspiration, but when you agnore things about yourself that makes it seem that's getting in the way, and when you come close to what the person that you want to be is, you will be a plain mess of mixed emotions that makes you nothing like what you want to become, and wish you would've followed of what you good at. Even if it means going awol.
And when he says "we love you more then you know", it means that no matter what you become in life, people around you will always love you for who you are.

I keep wondering about one thing.. "Never let your fear decide your fate." What if i dont know if i am scared? Maybe i am? Maybe i am not? There are times when i have to decide many things and i feel nothing, and there are times when i fear the outcome, but i dont see them as bad things either.. Yet i dont know, maybe they are bad, yet mayeb they are not? Sometimes i cant tell if i am curious or i am afraid..
So i sometimes just go with the flow, and later on think did i decide my fate with fear..?
