    I'm in my first year of serious sock knitting (it's more fun than that sounds), and I keep coming back to this video each time I have to pick up stitches. I am sure I'll be able to do it from memory soon, but for now I have your amazingly clear guidance that guarantees a perfect, zero-holes heel every time. So far I've been using it on heel flap & gusset, as I have yet to try to the band heel. I really appreciate your time making this tutorial!

    Great video! I love the new terminology you use (for me at least!) with the “Child, Parent, Grandparent” technique when picking up stitches. You are one of my very favorite teachers online and find your style of instruction relaxing, easy to follow and the videos are so up close that I can precisely see what you are demonstrating. Thank you for the bottom of my heart. You have saved me from having to run to my LYS for a quickly lesson and I prefer your style and voice anyway! I wish you would consider holding a weekend conference to learn new techniques with a group of your fans! Just saying…😉😉😉

      Hi Cynthia. Glad you enjoy the videos. Hosting some sort of regular, live sessions with fans is something on my radar, but it's still in the early stages of planning.

    Excellent video. I am knitting socks for the first time. I have tried short rows for heel shaping. Turned out awful; ripped it out. Tried afterthought heel; awful, ripped it out. Your band heel technique worked beautifully, the very first time. Love it that you go slowly at the critical parts, allowing me time to pause the video and work the stitches. Thank you!

    It would be interesting to see how you could work a band heel in reverse in a toe up sock.

    If you were to make this heel in contrasting yarn. We’re would you join the mc of yarn? Your instructions are very nice and clear. Easy to understand. Thank you 😊

      I'm not sure if this heel would look very nice in a contrasting color, but that doesn't mean you couldn't give it a try. After finishing the heel, I would probably rejoin the MC at the center of the bottom of the foot (before picking up the gusset sts).

      Hey just another quick question. On your switchback sock pattern. The toe, after round2 it says round 3,(1/4 rnd) what does that mean?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  4 роки тому +1

      It just means you're not going to work a full round, instead just work 1/4 of the round.

      And I'd love to see how it works out. If you have time, email me a pic.

    would your technique for picking up gusset stitches work with any sock pattern? Also, if I wanted a longer ribbing just knit it to my desired length then follow your pattern ... correct? thank you for the great videos :)

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  6 років тому +1

      Helen Caudill the technique for picking up gusset sts works well for socks with heel flaps that have a slipped st at the beginning of every flap row. Some patterns have you work the first and last flap stitches in garter stitch, so the flap edges look a little different. And yes, you can make the ribbing as long as you want. Just be aware that if you add more length to the ribbing you may need to buy more yarn. Have a great weekend, Helen!

    I have more stitches now than I started? So how do I get back to my 32 stitches for the bottom half of my foot?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  4 роки тому

      That's good. You are supposed to have more than your original number of stitches. If you are following a pattern, it's time for the gusset shaping. If you're not following a pattern, you generally decrease 1 st at each side of the heel sts, every other rnd, until you get back to your original number of sts. Happy knitting!

    At 4:07 you mention that some people pick up both legs of the stitch, but you pick up one. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to picking up two ... or one?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  5 років тому +4

      I wouldn't say there's a specific advantage/disadvantage to either method. The primary difference happens on the inside of the sock. When you pick up through both legs, there is a slightly larger ridge along the picked up stitches on inside the sock.

    When you pick up the gap stitches after knitting the front pattern you show picking up the GREAT Grandparent and bar (8:37) but you state that you pick up the Grandparent and bar. Is that simply a slip of the tongue since you just added a stitch in working across the front pattern round? Thanks so much for the new heel directions, I love this band heel and will be using it on my regular socks from now on.

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  5 років тому

      Ugh! Totally a slip of the tongue that I didn't catch in editing :( . Technically, picking up the grandparent and the bar would still close up the gap, but picking up the great-grandparent and the bar makes things a little tighter. My apologies.
