The Largest Drivable Openworld Project Ever!

- Over at Authentic Simulation we've been working on a massive project for the last year... and now its time for it to make its first official appearance. Our Portugal Openworld Project for Assetto Corsa will be the largest drivable open world ever created. The initial section of the project will eventually comprise over 500km of roads, and we've already laid over 120km of those roads and I'll give you taste of that in this video.

I've now completed the second video which gives an early preview of the AI Traffic:

"We need 50k, we promise this isn't fake" is a really tough sell in an industry that is full of rug pulls and never finished projects. Not to say this isn't real but you're going to have an extremely hard time convincing people this is actually coming out.
That's why we've been working on this map for a year already.
As a studio, we've been developing mods for Assetto Corsa for several years now, including officially licensed cars and tracks with auto brands and racing series. So we have the experience and talent to do this, it's just a MUCH larger version of what we've done many times before.
The initial beta section will be made available immediately following the Kickstarter's completion. The initial 500km section will be completed no matter what, the Kickstarter is just to hire more artists to speed things up, and if we hit our stretch goals then we will expand the scope of the map to be potentially record breaking.
@@ACasualRacer Might still be worth having in mind that from a user standpoint your time spent doesn't equal credibility. Not for the mod itself but for the funding requested. I understand that projects like this are huge, and you need a lot of capable people that can't work for free - it's truly a large-scale thing, but it is after all a mod that depends on AC and it's future.
its only 50k. are we really passive agressively suggesting this ASK is similar in thought or feeling to STAR CITIZEN....he's asking for 50k. not the world donate a dollar. 50k people do that you got your money...he isnt asking you for 100 dollars. whats the concern? for a dollar even if he wanted to pull the rug out from under me I wouldn't care.
I dont even know why im defending these people..I literally stumbled across this video and in the world of high dollar games that go no where. asking 50k is nothing. Assuming you have the fan base to support it. if you only have 65 people REALLY excited then asking 50k is a big ask but eh...if you got the fanbase 50k is nothing.
@@justins21482 All that's being said is that upfront campaigns have been a disaster for a while now. Combine it with the fact that this isnt a standalone project but a mod and you can see how it can go.
50k really isn't that much money to be fair. If you're planning to scam people, as a company with employees, you'd need to ask for a lot more than 50k for it to be worth it.
Sounds like a cool idea, but I want to mention how important it is that regardless of the size there isn't much of a point if all areas are, feel, drive and look the same with the latter being less important than the first 3.
Someone mentioned that the streets look wide, like "forza". I think that's alright if there are other areas that aren't
People are saying forza’s roads are wide??? 😂 maybe in forza horizon 1-3 but 4 & 5 have very narrow roads compared to the old games.
a lot of people in forza also use a racing slick instead of whats actually legal and practical on the road for daily use. i went back thru old horizons (especially 4) and using a non racing slick feels so much more fun.
@@RellyG100 forza roads are definitely not narrow
it's Portugal, we have it all here
@@RellyG100horizon 1 by far had the most narrow roads and they've only gotten wider and straighter, almost consecutively.
And I thought 130km of Tokyo's highways was insane. Hearing 500km of Portugal is super exiting, I will back the kickstarter day 1
you are the same person backing all those scam games.
@@NotEpoch excuse me? I think you are mistaken
What is so exciting about driving on a long highway to really drive 130kilometers of it?
Glen Sheil for Assetto. 1000+km of roads through Scottish mountains, free.
@@davemegadeth4025because I'd need to drive for 3000km to reach Portugal.
Driving trough cities, especially big cities has the potential to be a very educational experience.
It can be used by starters and beginners to practice driving trough different intersections.
Only if it has realistic traffic tbh, but yes it has potential
I've put maybe 150k kms on Shuto with AI over the last 4 years. This would be an amazing change of scenery.
Exactly! One of the reasons we chose Portugal.
glencoe. glensiel; 600km on the latter. free on racerooom
what the hell, were you playing every day for like 10 hours or what? 150k is insane. I've been playing for 4 years and put little over 35k on SRP, nearly 69k overall. This is nuts.
@@dusterpl6093 I always do a full lap and a half from Tatsumi until i wind up somewhere along ueno route on the 2nd lap. First year i drove almost every day and racked up about 60k. Once my hours changed, i couldn't drive once i got off work and kept the sessions to off days. Each session usually lasts from 180kms - 250kms. Number could be higher because i have a handful of cars at least in the 5k range, but don't record mileage for whatever reason.
This looks amazing! I'm from Portugal and I have to say, I'm so happy that you guys are making such a cool and huge idea in our little country. Best of luck with the project and I can't wait to support this really amazing project! Keep up the great work! 🇵🇹
Rally stage sections on gravel roads would be ace!
Especially with all of the new off road gravel features that CSP is now adding to AC!
You guys should implement road imperfections like pot holes standing water dirt rocks etc
Yes!
Thats a great idea! Also i suggest adding some plants growing on the sides of the world, its ads to the detail!
Standing water and dirt sounds awesome. Potholes I deal with enough of them irl 😂
@@gameraddikted i think well placed ones like ones that are obvious and use environment to tell
@@pewpew-_-2157 Perhaps. Depending on their implementation. Purely visual may work.
This is actually the exact road I always drove back from surfing while I was living in Portugal. (Road from Praia Grande to Praia do Guincho)
Instant nostalgic feelings. Count me in!!!
i dont know why you choose Portugal but has a Portuguese, just take my money 💰💰
Portugal has been considered to have one of the best roads to drive of the world, the N2 and N202 as you may know.
Also, our country is FILLED with beautiful views, I’m from the North, Viana do Castelo, and we have amazing mountain roads to be driven in.
I’ve tought about this as a kid when playing Eurotruck, “I would love for someone to make Portugal in a game”, and finally these guys are doing it.
All my prayers for this project to go well! I want to drive in a sim where I can drive in reality 😁
@@Garage21 i have driven in some roads in northen portugal, absolutly beautiful. Any backroads or montain roads you would recomend that are not that well know?
This looks excellent, absolutely appreciate the effort that seems to have gone in on this. Will likely be backing when I hear more on the project.
@@WeAreChecking cool! Early next week I'll be showing off our custom traffic pack with the 20+ optimized cars, trucks, vans, and semis we've made to breathe life into the world.

As a Portuguese and Assetto Corsa lover all I can say is: Count me in 👍
I'm in.... Will check out the website.... This idea is brilliant!!!
Good training for younger drivers...! 😊
I backed Project cars and watching it's progress was an awesome experience.
This needs to be in BeamNG
It will break the game. Big beamng (way smalled than this one) maps are RAM hogs. I had this map once, that not even with my 32GB or RAM would work nice. Still...I'd love to see that too.
@@grabedigger sounds less like its breaking the game, and more like its breaking your PC
This in BeamNG will make the most beefy computer you can build cry...
@@PhoenixTwoFiftySix you're telling me that I need like 256GB of the fastest RAM to just play one single map?! My PC is good enough and 32GB of DDR5 should be more than enough for the most part.
@@grabedigger I was kidding
I wish all the best to this project! Im willing to see this full on and im ready to pay for it when it comes out!
Thank you! The amount of support we get will determine the overall scope of the project!
@@ACasualRacer It surely will be the most anticipated mod for the AC community , ill be doing a video on this to portuguese/brazilian viewers on the next few days, AC community is huge everywhere
This project is exactly what I'm looking for. An open world driving experience. I really hope you can bring this to reality guys. It's awesome!
I really really hope this turns out great! I love the fact that you guys are in it for the long haul.
Beautiful! It'll be amazing to have in the future such a wonderful open world map with that amount of work and love put into it. Also, as a Spaniard I really appreciate that you've chosen to recreate the Iberian peninsula with its unique aesthetic.
As a Portuguese it makes me very happy to know about your project :D
I don't think this is the largest. The largest hand made map was TDU/TDU 2 Oahu if I'm not mistaken at 3000km^2. Fuel is at 14000km^2, but it's all barren wasteland and is Procgen.
Yes, TDU is what we are expecting to exceed eventually.
I'm not really counting Fuel since it's ProcGen.
@@ACasualRacer Then you will have to stock up to at least 2000km road network...... cause TDU 1 had 1800km of roads to drive..... TDU2 had even more kilometers on Oahu with 2200 of them plus Ibiza with another 930km of roads making it nearly 3200km of road network to drive..... so you're not weven close to it at the moment..... and there's TDU Solar Crown on the way..... but all that is nothing compared to The Crew 2 road network of over 10000km...... so you have a high target to reach if you wanna claim that title.
@@320iSTWEdition He said TDU explicitly, you're taking the whole series along with your shitty argument lmao. Let them cook first bruh.
@@Pierredorado300 So length of road network and map size are identical? Okay.
@@320iSTWEdition you still don’t get it, but it’s fine.
Looks amazing! Looking forward to see the progress. I always had the idea to make something like this but was like: "Nah this to big to be viable". Good luck!
The elevation changes on some roads seem a little different but I recognized the road right away! Always wanted to have these in assetto!
The truck driver simulator already have that large open world type of map software with traffic and etc. it just had car mods included… seemed fun and you can literally get lost. It would also take hours to reach a certain destination.
Ever heard of Glensheil? 1000+ km of Scottish roads. Released years ago and free.
@@Tolmalion driven it many a time. Its not very detailed though, and we are aiming for 4,000+ km with details similar to top AC tracks. Just this initial proof of concept section is 500+ km.
@@ACasualRacer every modder working on a similar open world project for assetto said the same at some point, until they each realized it's an insane amount of work to add proper details, and it's impossible to use decent looking assets if you want to keep a reasonable framerate
stop making promises you can't possibly know you'll be able to keep.
love this, my dream is to drive in a large public road map with traffic in my sim, it’s something that us sim racers are always looking for done well, keen to help back this project when i can financially afford it 🎉
This looks incredible on the paper. It doesn't make sense that it didn't gain much views yet since project like this deserves exposure. Looking forward to support it!
Location is everything & unfortunately Portugal falls flat
I lived in Portugal for years, and will be retiring there. I love it. Count me in
living in portugal and getting heavily into assetto recently, i would just like to say... take my money, all of it
That world is almost about the size of the island of Guam, USA. Nice!!!
Best of luck to you guys! Can't wait to see it happen!
Its a bright future ahead for drivers thats for sure, awesome job so far
Goodluck with this project! It will be such an incredible addition to the driving sim world!!!!!! :D
every portugese can be proud of your efforts, i always thought about racing games having such big maps , allowing to travel even visiting racing museums and even drive all the way to diferent circuits and take part on a race, like in real life.
also able to eat something in some restaurants before racing. tuning the car in various workshops like in need for speed underground 2
As a Portuguese i feel really honored that you guys chose our country to base this map on, i wish everyone from the team the best and to keep the good work cuz the map is already looking amazing even tho its far from finished, congrats and good luck 🇵🇹
(Also, what area of Portugal is this being based on?)
The road in the demo is the one frome Praia Grande (Sintra) to praia do Guincho (Cascais) where I used to live. I can‘t wait to race on the streets I learnd driving on 😍😍
How surreal❤❤❤
Brah! This game will be damn lit once released. Still looks like we got a loooong ass way to go, but I'm defs looking forward to it. Please keep us posted
Definitely down to sponsor and put our custom car shop in the map with a drift course in the parking lot ;)
@@customf.n.customs5 exactly the idea! Send us an email at development@authenticsimulation.com, and we can discuss details for sure!
Cant wait for this mod to come out just so me and my friends spend 99% of the time just racing up and down the Vasco da Gama bridge
I love TDU1, for example, which the map is huge, 100km from one side to the other. So it's completely possible.
I love it.
We're looking at the INEVITABLE next step in open real world ground simulation. If you don't do it, some other studio will eventually do it.
As I say, it's inevitable, it's interesting and it's only a matter of time before a game studio develops a whole country simulated for a driving experience, and in many years to come extrapolated to the entire planet.
I must admit this is something I always think about/dream about when I'm playing the fantastic Microsoft flight simulator....'if only the ground based models were fully fleshed out drivable road networks too'.
I know, big dream right!
Good luck getting this over the line buddy.
😍 if only my anemic hamster could handle it, this sounds amazing !!
We are going to work really hard on making sure everything is optimized, and use custom code that will help with loading in such a massive world into Assetto Corsa.
please keep working on this, dont make it another failed idea. I like the plans you have for it
Thanks, will do!
Very interesting. Some of the activities you mentioned lend this more to BeamNG than AC though
We may bring this to other games, it just depends on both community and those games' developers support.
@@ACasualRacer sounds awesome! Don't get me wrong no doubt it'll be a blast in AC too. All the best
Finally. Forza with the Horizon!
All jokes aside this looks awesome. Always wanted a map where I can always continue to explore or drive down a road I typically don’t frequent.
Start that Kick! I'm ready!
Started watching the video, did not at all expect to hear that this is for the country I live in. I actually live on an island that belongs to portugal and I've been thinking for the longest time to turn this island into a map for Assetto Corsa.
Something similar to look into is DCS World. Yes, it's a Flight Simulator, however, with the Combined Arms module, players can drive vehicles around the massive terrains. If it had more realistic driving physics and more detailed road infrastructure it would make for a really enjoyable driving simulation.
hey really liked your half finished game sounds like extremely good idea and hopefully a day will come where i will able to test it out
good luck and all wishes
If you guys are hiring, I'm local to the area, (maybe the not the specific area mapped so far), but i have some basic photo equipment that could be useful for photogrammetry, reference photos, etc. i went also in a politechnical/university institute that has a video game development major/bachelor degree, and i still have some connections with tutors from that institute that maybe could be interested in some sort of partnership.
Currently not hiring, but if the Kickstarter goes viral then we will post some job listings on our site and LinkedIn.
Your guys' work and team is really impressive, love what you do
Great initiative by you guys. Good luck! 👍
Im Portuguese and i didnt know about that! awesome
This is beyond sick!! Would love to see this go full bore. Will gladly donate to this cause!
Love it, hopefully you can include a few more polygons on the invisible mesh. NGL looks kinda lego rn.
Of course! This is a long term project, and our goal is to develop it to a level equal to the highest quality tracks for AC... across all 500km+.
@@ACasualRacerwould be cool to see it be something like the driving sim of starship citizen
@@kedwyd6535Starcitizen is an almost 1 billion dollar project. You're dreaming 😅
There's also the possibility of fleshing this out for AC, but when the New AC drops (depending on how the tooling is) it might prove to be a blueprint for asset updates, etc if a port winds up being feasible.
Does there happen to be a local racetrack in the area that can be included? I know it flies in the face of open world, but it would add an extra dimension.
Autodromo do Estoril isn't far from what you see in the video. This is also close to where some of the stages for the Rally were in the 80's before the Group B Ban.
@@xinacrixp Cheers, bro. Thanks for letting me know.
Isn't the tdu2 map way bigger? Thought it had like 3000km of road
Yeah it has 3000km of road. And a game called fuel 14,400 km^2 of drivable open world, it’s insane. But this projects is still very cool
TDU2 was rubbish though compared to TDU, i loved TDU so much i applied to be in the TDU2 beta(i got accepted) and that left me with nothing but disappointment.
@@sneescampers The original Tdu was bigger than 500km too, great game

Ibiza made up for it honestly, if someone ports that map to AC it would be crazy.
this would be great to train to drive lessons
Would love to see something similar in the US. We also need semis in this game.
This looks amazing , just to hear all this and the simple idea of playing cops and Robbers makes me want this .
Its the simple gameplay that people make themself is what would sell a game like this even better.
Maybe having an option to create your own racelaps .
And add exploration ( fill in the road lines ) thatll keep so many of us busy.
A BeamNG port would be great too.
Amazing! I’ve always wanted big maps like these because I have this tendency with racing games to think “what’s over there?” And it turns out I can’t even go over there and I feel confined and I want to explore those places but I can’t. Looking forward to this (if it comes out on console)
As a Portuguese person, thank you for taking the time and effort to make an in-game version of our lovely scenery and roads.
I will point out one flaw, though: B-Roads here often have potholes, lower quality/degraded asphalt on certain sections, etc. that should be featured if possible, for the sake of realism.
I was just browsing UA-cam until I came across this game. this game has to succeed. you are every open world driver dream come true 😂
that's almost length (logitude) of my country germany ... WoW!
Well, i picked up AC for cheap. Might try this one day. I used to think it would be cool for games to simulate the whole world lol . We're getting there XD
Looks interesting! Can you make the roads a little less wide tho?
There will be tons of variety in terms of road types and widths.
This looks right up my ally. I love building maps. will be cool to watch this grow. to poor to give money but if I can help some how let me know.
I can't wait to see this on Wicked Wizard in two years.
This might come out before GTAVI
It sounds like exactly what I've been waiting for but i really really want somewhere to drive on the left in a rhd vehicle like the uk. If you do that i would be in love with it!
How am I only hearing about a project this insane now??
I've been waiting for a project like this where the devs use 3D map data to replicate irl environments then fill-in the roads and models with more detail.
This is awesome. I just hope that AC Evo makes porting AC mods relatively smooth and painless because if this had to be remade entirely to exist in that game when its just right around the corner that would be unfortunate
@@NOVAScOoT most likely we could develop this project for both as we have a several year plan of development.
Traffic will make the world living. I hope there's traffic and life as well.
I love it
I always was wondering if there was ever a chance to get like the whole world drivable in such a fashion and this is like a little part of it in a way. Perhaps a first step!
I would maybe rethink the custom unique spawnpoint/house thing. I understand that you need incentives for the kickstarter but making this so exclusive does lock a lot of people out of a part of the game. Even if its a tiny part like a house bought by someone else, its still a part of it. Should definitely be a way later on ingame to get these custom spots and they shouldn’t be unique to one person imo. Would probably feel a bit bad if you knew this feature exists but your favourite spot in the map was bought by someone else or its after the kickstarter and you can no longer take part in that feature. So i hope you maybe rethink this.
Just my 2 cents, i wouldn’t make a part of the game so exclusive even if its just a small insignificant part.
That being said, its an amazing project, really looking forward to it in the future!
This sounds amazing
Hopefully you select a great selection of roads from curvy backroads to city streets and maybe a highway
As long as the clouds are little fluffy, it's all good'😂
massively surprised that you guys decided to go with Portugal of all places (and being that that's where I'm from, positively so)
I genuinely wonder how large the scope of the map will be, is it meant to be 1:1? how large do you plan on making it (by one of the road signs and mention of the airport I'd guess that the Lisbon metropolitan area will be a main focus)? Depending on your plans I'd be more than happy to help you guys get reference materials!
I spy some good drifting areas. 👀
Oh wow, awesome... Looking forward to this...
FUND IT EVERYONE, ITS ASSETTO MEETING HORIZON-
All I want in an open world map, that's realistic, has good driving physics and accurate guns. That's all.
yeah you just can't enjoy something without death and murder in it, am I right?
Interesting. Will be interesting to see how this develops.
i want to see something like microsoft flight simulator, which takes maps of the planet to procedurally generate a playable copy of our planet, but for cars...
Interesting to see if this will still be supported 1 year from now
The game Fuel already tried this, had 5560 square miles (or 8947 sq. km) of space. Reality is that unless the locations are detailed and interesting, the total amount doesn't really matter. I guess it's neat from a technical standpoint, but considering we already have the entire planet flyable, there's probably not much wow factor to that stuff anymore.
looks dope. you probably should do it i sectors. youre gonna need alot of things to keep people invested. set dressing. race configs. traffic paths. racer ai line optimization. flare. stages.
imagine planning out your trip to portugal in assetto corsa
Looks great already, fingers crossed it can be ported to asetto corsa evo in the future as well
Driving is one thing but getting out the car is of something that a lot of the open road driving doesn't have if you're trying to compete with solo crown it's got to be more than just roads we're talking fuel consumption gas stations which is always missing in driving games so I'm super glad and I will donate this got to make it big and please no online only nobody likes that we want a game we can play by ourselves and just get lost in the immersive 👏👏👏
Promises told, but never fulfilled.
The beta is ready to be released already! And will be available immediately following the Kickstarter.
We need this in BeamNG too!
It'll be a stretch goal!
One thing that completely throws me off is when the roads are too wide, I personally prefer narrower roads that are more realistic. Makes it more challenging and fun, and obviously realistic.
You got a team and I'm doing a project this big alone for smokey mountains....wish I had minions lol. Nice work
