  • Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but heavier is the burden of being next in line.
The British Royal family is built on the traditional duty until death. For every heir to the throne, there is a spare.
Charles knew he’d become King, following in his mother's footsteps, leaving his sister Anne behind. Despite their close childhood bond, becoming the reigning Monarch would definitely divide the pair.
When one steps up, the other must step back.

Anne is exemplary. Born second ? OK. There is a role for that position for that spot. Carry it out - and she has admirably. I will never forget her 24 hour vigilance over the queen's casket as she traveled with her toward her final destination. Dutiful daughter, whose husband never hesitated to support Anne. Always quietly in the background. Never a fuss, never private interviews or books, or anything of the sort. They deserve the respect of the nation.

“Spare” is a state of mind when you come down to it. Anne has never had that mindset. She embraced a supportive, essential role as a member of the royal family and has been brilliant at it!

Anne spent barely a decade as the spare. It was Andrew that was second in line for most of her life, so I imagine it must not have been terribly difficult for her to get out of that mindset if she ever possessed it at all. In fact, any attribution of "sparedom" to her would have been of her and/or the media's own doing.

It’s not a title to be a spare. It’s just something that comes with not being the direct heir. Any child that’s not the heir apparent is the “spare”. Heir or spare, being a royal family member comes with being an upstanding member of society anyway. So yes, Anne was the spare. And so were the other brothers that were not direct in line. State of mind or not, the spare idea comes from generations ago when people did not live as long and people became sick with illness and disease. So because of that, families needed a “spare”.

They can’t just go and live however they please, they know their every move is under a microscope. Any mistakes they’ve made, they have made them on a world stage. I know my worst times were bad enough as a “nobody”. I couldn’t imagine if I had the WORLD know about any blunder.

Nowdays the rules of the succesion changed and so from William's kids, George is the first born and such the heir to the throne but Princess Charlotte is the spare, after him. Last one is Prince Louis the youngest of the three.

I will miss her for whatever years I remain on this planet. In the United States we have experienced SO much turmoil on a national stage through the 60’s and on that the instability of it all has left a profound mark on ourselves as a people. We are not the only country that has experienced the same. Her Majesty was someone for whom I had great respect and admiration. When it could not have been easy she made her role appear easy by seemingly being at ease herself. She understood that holding her tongue in certain circumstances had as much power as attempting to be an obnoxiously overt supporter of an important position. Personally, she represented the continuity and stability I was not fortunate enough to experience as either a child or an adult. I do not support everything King Charles has done in his life as a husband but I understand what he was attempting to do-not always well handled. I DO believe her will be a good King, perhaps even a great one. It is in his hands she left the future of Britain.

Anne was not a typical “spare” though …. Behind King Charles and his children were Prince Andrew (not sure when Queen had the female thing changed) and hiss offspring, then Prince Edward and his offspring … before Anne came into the line of succession.
Regardless, there were MANY times I thought the Princess Royal should have leapfrogged over Charles, but he has certainly come into his own as a future, and now King of England.
I just think that Prince Henry (refuse to use his nickname or his wife’s name as it might generate some kind of perk for them) has been a spoiled brat … actually even more infantile behavior at 35+ yrs than when he was an actual toddler, child, juvenile.
I wasn’t around at the time, but have seen so many documentaries and read historical stuff, that I feel I can say Prince Henry is even MORE of an embarrassment to the RF and England than his great-uncle, the Duke of Windsor was.

Yet HRH accepts with gratitude and grace her role in the Royal Family… unlike other “spare” who has only degraded our beloved Family!!!

There s a lot of respect in their relationship as a family, as a passing tradition from eras we can only imagine to today and towards the future as a symbol of stability in the eyes of the entire world. This symbol keeps us feeling safe and sane. There s more than history to it, it s a sense of direction to the future.
    Long live the monarchy!

Очень интересно за ними наблюдать даже мне из России. Как один большой, интересный сериал.
