Panchiko was a band that was active for a brief period of years during the dawn of the new millenium. They released two EPs, "DEATHMETAL" in 2000 and "Kicking Cars" in 2001, with no commercial outlet. CDs of the two EPs were passed around to friends and family and never saw the light of day until in 2016 when a 4chan user came across a copy of the "DEATHMETAL" EP. He had picked it up from a thrift store and wondered if the /mu/ board had any information about Panchiko. The nature of the band never expanding beyond those in the know meant no documentation yet existed, and when the original poster provided a very poor rip of the CD, curiosity struck viewers of the thread. A dead-end was met, but the bandname and album was spread around, albeit with little to any notoriety, until in 2017 when my friend introduced me to the album after they had found it on UA-cam. At the time the upload had 10 views and was an even poorer quality rip of the already destroyed audio due to compression. I tracked down the original rip and posted it myself to my now defunct channel which, at the time, had garnered a following of 10,000 people. That exposure lead to a much more long-lasting interest that grew over time, and when interest resurfaced to a greater extent during the sensationalism of "The Most Mysterious Song," followers of that and lost media in general inevitably came across Panchiko. It's thanks to those fans who gathered on discord that they eventually tracked down the original bandmembers, and Andy- who now works as a sound engineer, has graciously taken the time to track down copies of the band's projects and remaster them!
What this album includes is the four remastered tracks from the first EP from 2000, "DEATHMETAL," the following three tracks which made up the 2001 EP "Kicking Cars," and the original data-rot tracks which were ripped by the 4chan user who initially discovered a copy of "DEATHMETAL" back in 2016. It is a labor of love on Andy's behalf, and after 20 years the music of Panchiko is finally seeing it's first commercial release.

Yo wtf are you doing here
when i discovered this album i genuinely thought it came out in the 2010s, if it rlly came out in 2000 this is ridiculously ahead of its time
the anime references, the album cover, the lofi production, the bedroom pop sound, everything abt this sounds like something you’d hear on bandcamp today
Just found out abt this album and I couldn’t describe it any better
Tbf, everything on bandcamp sounds like late 90s/early 2000s indie. We aren't doing anything new.
@@ThatFilmisGnarly You're not wrong, but still, this came out in 2000. Sounds more modern than that imo
I guess so, some of this also reminds me of radiohead which also predates it.

Merci Feldup pour la découverte 😊
i was talking about this with a friend the other day, just imagine the amount of music we’ve lost in the past due to lack of being able to store it. so many old EPs and albums made by nobodies that probably have very good music, lost due to time.
like think about it, maybe the best song you would ever hear in your entire life was made in the 1980s by a bunch of college students, it just never got popular and is now lost due to time.
digital music is great, the fact that you can upload your music to a couple of websites completely for free is incredible. i dont think we’ll loose much music now.

That would be amazing holy shit
FLCL is a great comparison to this album
dude I was literally just thinking about flcl or how it would be a good soundtrack in welcome to the nhk
Man that would be Incredible
man if flcl 2 would've been at least somewhat good. it didn't need to be like the first one but it didn't do anything cool or new either or did it well
As a sound engineer and producer who works frequently with lo fi recording techniques I have to say that this kind of "rot" can occur on older low quality cd-r's from around the late 90s and early 2000s due to the fact that you literally have to burn data onto some of them. Add to that fact that if it was burnt at the wrong speeds for those discs they will last about 2 months before they start to sound bitcrushed like the songs here but honestly it doesn't take much and can be replicated with some care if you know a thing or two. I know this has been long winded but I have one more small point that the warping you can hear may be from shitty tape they used to record the masters I have to say it is unlikely because if you had warping this bad you would never use those as your masters anyway. Regardless I hope I have shed light on the subject for those who are interested and I will say if this isn't from the early era of cd-r's they have done a spectacular job on the production side, the guerilla marketing is top notch and the album is phenomenal just discovered it and am loving every track
@@toad8840 yeah if in post without the original stems they've removed a hiss like that that's most likely where the vauge warping has appeared as it's gotten rid of some frequencies at certain parts, I have to add that this album has become a fast favorite of mine I find myself coming back to it often and I only stumbled across it about a week ago so that's a testament to these beautiful songs
Wait so CDs have an expiration date of sound quality? I have a shit load of those CD-R discs from probably 2000s was thinking about putting my songs on there and then burning them. Are you saying if I wait a few months before burning they could have a similar sound?
@@shitocodone8940 it all depends on brand and how old they are, plus if they've had data on them the entire time. For the degradation to occur it needs data on it in the first place to degrade. It might still give you that effect with a fresh burn but I can't speak to the results as I've never seen or done it myself, let me know the results because this could be an interesting use for an experimental band I've been recording lately by mixing the "clean" sound with the rotted one
- EvilExNumber3 the stuff I’m working on now doesn’t really fit it one song might so I’ll try to finish it tomorrow. I kinda just plan everything in my head and hope I don’t forget months later but helps me stick to ideas I really like and only make good stuff rather gimmicky songs. ( if you were to look at my songs on this channel they aren’t reflective of what I do now. Those were just songs from 2018 and below that I remastered for fun)
@@shitocodone8940 ahh yeah I feel you it'll be interesting to see if you'd be able to replicate it with a fresh burn it'd open some interesting post FX possibilities
i thought we'd be stuck with just the data rot versions and that we wouldn't be able to find any of the members or a 2nd cd. i'm so fucking glad that i got proven wrong. thank you owain for giving us knowledge about the band and the album. thank you andy for remastering the album and giving us this. thank you to the rest of the band for making this masterpiece.

This whole album is so pretty and soft and it baffles me the amount of time it took to find a piece of art like this, it makes me wonder what other masterpieces are forgotten and will never be found.
Kindest Of Thieves - Serial Mothers and Terminal Hunchbacks is a great one that I rescued
Muchas como la humanidad misma
everyone be like "oh yeah this sounds like a mix of death grips and crazy frog"
There's just something about album art that is just so aspiring. It makes me want to go out and create my own despite being nowhere near an artist.
If you have the will. There's a way. I've only started recently within the past year and a half from being only able to draw stick figures pretty much, to getting close to the face you see in this album. Granted, I'm still very much a novice, learning new tricks and things to use to produce the art that I want. But, if you do wish to draw something akin to like how this album is, I implore you, try it. Art is such a wondrous thing I never realized I would love so much till I actually delved myself into it.
Its literally just a panel from a manga with colored square spaces and text put on
The title track is one of the most transportive, poignant, well-composed tracks I have ever heard in my life. It's rare for me to cry to music as much as I did to this gorgeous song.
It really is a beautiful song. It actually made me cry too. What a wonderful and beautiful track. And with the shoddy equipment they got, its a wonder they made something so beautiful and amazing.
The glow part two
I think you're being a little hyperbolic
Its pretty shit. Like the rest of the album. Ahead of its time, sure. But its generally bad all the way through.

I just learned about the story behind this album and I'm coming back to it, it was almost going to slip away as another recent experimental album to me, I can't believe how these guys were ahead of their times ! This is amazing
I like that both remastered EPs combined just _barely_ pass the half hour mark, making it a full length album.
Technically it would already be with the seven tracks, as the RIAA defines an album as either five or more tracks at least 15 minutes in length or any amount of tracks if it's at least thirty minutes, but the former definition seems too lenient of a threshhold and unsatisfying
Very rarely I favor the entire album by musicians and these are one of those rare moments. Soundtrack is perfect to my ears and everything just gives me this nostalgia feeling from a older anime I had never watch but wished it existed. If I where to make a anime this album certainly be the inspiration for the soundtrack.
Have you seen flcl ?
@@tiredsam8807 I have especially when I was younger (which is ironic for what the anime about). I mean the music pretty close to flcl but the way I imagine this album 'if it had an anime' is more like K-on! but with the mix of weirder stuff and plot going on

Had chills all throughout Kicking Cars. So damn happy to finally hear these without the rot.
Hearing the rot on these sounded so cool, but I'm happy too.
I had a dream last night where I was in some sort of art class and me and a bunch of other students were working on some charcoal drawings. In the class there was a radio playing music and at some point, a song that sounded very much like Kicking Cars started playing and everyone including me began singing along like it was just a pop song that everyone knew like that. It's not all the time that I have these vivid dreams with music I can recognize so distinctly, so for my brain have chosen that song in particular, especially the one with the lyrics that mentions dreaming, it's all very interesting.
Cool

Dude, the very first thing I heard from Pachinko was Sodium Chloride and the first thing I was, "These guys must've really loved Pablo Honey and Ok Computer."
@@nightmare-nightmarenightma1147 Sodium Chloride doesn't sound like Pablo Honey at all, easily sounds like a B-Side for The Bends
Personally I think this album fits rarely well into the wake of OK Computer. It has similar vibes with the mix of electronic and rock elements with some weird experimentation and generally melancholy tone. The lo-fi rock sound is probably more an element of the recording conditions, but it’s not like weird lo-fi rock was unheard of, Grandaddy being a great lo-fi indie rock band from around the time. I’m not 100% convinced the story behind the album is true, but it’s fairly believable that a group of young guys could’ve made this in the late 90s.
I enjoyed the whole album and I loved it how nostalgic and calm sounding it sounds, it reminds me of the early 2000s alternative music. This is one of my favourites albums and I am glad to listen to this (nearly) 20 year-old album from the past. Amazing!

Laputa was all we knew
and how we got there, how we flew up
Heaven's doors are miles away
'Cause you’re stuck to the ground, you have to stay
[Bridge]
The robots died of the flash
The robots died of it last
[Chorus]
Laputa was all we knew
and how we got there, how we flew up
Heaven's doors are miles away
'Cause you're stuck to the ground, you have to stay

*~~The eyes of Ibad~~*
[Verse 1]
Take me to, where they have Dune seas
I don't care what they've done to me
[Pre-Chorus]
The girl in the sky, her blue and blue eyes
She's holding up the world
With her hands in the pockets constructing the prophets
That you try to ban
[Chorus]
So, how high must I go?
Before I know
That it's too far to fall?
So, how high must I go?
Before I know
That it's too far to fall?
[Verse 2]
Wake me up, when we reach the sea
I don’t care, nothing is waking me
[Pre-Chorus]
We pray to the sky, our blue in blue eyes
We're holding up the world
With her hands in her pockets constructing the prophets
That you try to ban
[Chorus]
So, how high must I go?
Before I know
That it's too far to fall?
So, how high must I go?
Before I know
That it's too far to fall?
[Bridge]
Breaking the bones, 'cause I've known what I've known too long
Holding the phone, 'cause I've shown what I've shown, it's wrong
Breaking the bones, 'cause I've known what I've known too long
Holding the phone, 'cause i know what I know, it's wrong
[Outro]
How high?
How high?

*~~CUT~~*
[Verse 1]
Faster, than light
To burn the stripes
They forged this heart
For you to play the part
[Chorus]
Have i been cut again?
Just to dodge
Sweet descent my friend
[Verse 2]
Spit now the fire
Fantasies desire
They forged this heart
For you to fall apart
[Chorus]
Have i been cut again?
Just to dodge
Sweet descent my friend
[Bridge]
And i will reap what you've sown
Just to play
These games we love
[Verse 3]
Try to describe
The voices in your head
They're hard to disguise
Somebody said
Come back to Earth
You've gone too far this time
They cut you too deep
You tread these thin white lines
And we know the truth
We sit at home
We watch the girl in the booth
Who gives her services for hundreds of yen
She wonders where all the happiness went
[Outro]
She's cut, cut, cut
(cut, cut, cut)

*~~Sodium Chloride~~*
[Verse 1]
Dry skin falling away
How did green find the words to say?
[Chorus]
Don't let the tears build up the years
Don't let the tears build up the years
[Verse 2]
Dry lips and tears in the rain
No hips, you're here to keep me safe
Fall out and patches of blue sky
No doubt we're here to keep these lies
[Chorus]
Don't let the tears build up the years
Don't let the tears build up the years
[Outro]
'Cause no one will notice you (When you're gone)
Notice you (When you're gone)
Notice you (When you're gone)
Will notice you (When you're gone)
Will notice you (When you're gone)
Will notice you (When you're gone)

*~~Kicking Cars~~*
[Verse 1]
The night spent kicking cars
Won't you help me find the stars
The things I dream
Are tearing up the structure's seams
[Pre-Chorus]
And analyse with ice cold eyes
Something in me makes you realise
The things I dream
Are tearing up the structure's seams
[Chorus]
And why can't we be analogue?
Running around in your consumer fog
And you're another stupid pet
Hey, did you forget your cigarettes?
[Verse 2]
We look to the kicked in stars
Family daytrips to the Moon and Mars
The things I dream
Are tearing up the structure's seams
[Pre-Chorus]
And analyse with Irish eyes
Something to me makes you want to die
The things I dream
Are tearing up the structure's seams
[Chorus]
And why can't we be analogue?
Running around in your consumer fog
And you're another stupid pet
Hey, did you forget your cigarettes?
And why can't we be analogue?
Running around in your consumer fog
And you're another stupid pet
Hey, did you forget your cigarettes?

thx for reading btw cut was my fav :D
Have a good day/night
Edit 1: adding the rest of the songs, btw ur cute o3o
Edit 2: ty to julian in the comments for the bridge in laputa :P
Edit 3: changed line 2 in deathmetal, thx for the suggestion, asurada :D
Edit 4: fixed spacing and lots of lyrics I'd heard wrong
The missing bridge in 'Laputa' is:
The robots died in a flash
The robots died of it last
Heroe
pretty sure verse 2 of Deathmetal is actually "she spends with Roy Fokker". as Owain stated in an interview: "I really like space opera Anime, and really liked Macross/Robotech, there is a line in DeathMetal about Roy Fokker."
"btw ur cute o3o"
aw thanks you too
Verse 2 of Sodium Chloride sounds like [?] Is "As long"
Stabilisers for Big Boys gave off early Linkin Park vibes, and I'm balling on the floor. This is a time capsule I was not mentally and emotionally prepared for.
Update: DEATHMETAL (ROT) took me back when my CD collections would be scratched and itd be annoying to hear the songs skipping 😭
Damn, this is amazing! not only the story behind it, but also how great the songs are. It's magical that this exists and it's here so that all of us can enjoy it for free. Thank you to everyone involved. Also, it looks and sound so modern. Can't believe this is from 2000, that's insane.
Didn't think I'd be here years later after OP's post. It's great that so many people got together to make this happen.
If radiohead watched anime.
Seeing these lads tomorrow night with Wisp in DC. Can't wait!
This feels like
Walking into a 7-11 alone at night with head phones
Watching your friends be happy without you as you watch from a far
Not knowing what to do when you turn 18 and wanting to stay a kid forever
Being lonely in a room full of people
A long car drive zoning out as rain drops fall down the window
The feeling of growing apart from your closest friends
So true!!! This feels sort of conforting, like I'm not the only one going through, like a distant link with someone else in this same mental state
This album reminds me of the early 2000s, when everyone had a Nokia phone and there was no Coronavirus. My cousin Alex gave me his Nokia 3310 and a hug, when the song DEATHMETAL was playing on his computer. Alex is also a big fan of anime and japanese stuff. He's 26 now, a good and calm person. Oh boy! How fast time flies!
and the fact that this album was REALLY released in 2000!
Hi! Just finished listening to it all! Not gonna I almost teared up when I heard it so clearly. It's kinda surreal hearing it so clean yet cool at the same time. If it's possible to find something like this, then it's entirely possible to find TMS too!
By the way, has anyone made the official lyrics already for the clean ver of the tracks?
Cartoon's Planet what is TMS?
@@cadenmeyer414 The Mysterious Song or what people like to call, "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" you can find videos on it by a UA-camr named Whang :)
Cartoon's Planet ah thanks
@MEKEIDO ! Not in this context lol
I don't remember who said it, but "lofi shoegaze" is exactly what this sounds like
the amount of times I've listened to this album is unhealthy
This album is awesome, a masterpiece. My favorite song from this album always changes because it's so hard to pick only one. I really wish Panchiko made more music, but I'm so glad that they are gaining popularity nowadays, they deserve it.
