Right on, this will help. I usually just tell people "there's a basic set of rules. there's cards follow those rules and cards that break those rules. Dont's beat Do's. Untap, upkeep, Draw, play a land and the rest comes with time.
Buying bulk was what I was recommended to do, I did it and I use like 3 of the 1000+ cards today. Had I known to go to a local draft night, I’d have gotten local dudes to give me their draft Chaffe for free and some notes to go along with em and been able to use many more ongoing
I kinda disagree. When you buy bulk people try to rip you off by selling 1000 worthless and/or useless cards. Those cards are worth nothing. You should get them for free.
It may be a bit of a joke here, but #BuyingBulkOnCARDMARKETandPlay would actually make a pretty decent video idea - a mini-Sealed league, for example? Just a thought... Great vid as always, though, guys (even if I'm not a New Magic Player).
I'm surprised Jump-Start wasn't mentioned, one of my playgroups started out with it and it was a really fun and comprehensive introduction to the game.
Jumpstart. Preconstructed mini-decks that quickly and in very simple way introduce you to different ways you can build a deck and synergies. And it's random and replayable! My wife was completely new to mtg and fell in love with Jumpstarts and that gave her confidence to build her first deck (on her own!) :D It's better than any other precon you can buy for a new player (apart from starter kit maybe, which is really nice for a first game).
Sure, but when you work out how the card does work it's quite a Eureka moment. If those decks are your first taste of magic, that Hullbreaker Horror will be by far the most powerful creature you've ever seen. Powerful cards are fun to play, and realising how much that card can control the game is very eye-opening.
Honestly, you can do a lot with 1000 cards from a bulk lot that has variety and cost 20 USD. Kitchen table sealed deck, constructed, winston draft, build your own jumpstart, make a cube. To date, this has been my favorite thing I ever bought and I’ve bought at least three lots. I even threw in bulk rares into the mix and made my own repacked mystery boosters using 10:3:1:1 ratio for C:U:R and mana fixing. It’s a blast and I highly recommend this kind of exercise if you’ve never tried it.
For any newer plays seeing people comment on bulk and its value proposition: that’s probably not how you want to approach the game to get into it. Bulk lets you start a collection, get a feel for the variety, and fool around with brewing. Playing and brewing decks that don’t work optimally will make you better, and it can be a hell of a lot of fun! It’s just not ideal if you’re the kind of person who wants to immediately buy a tier one Modern deck with an eye for the price of cards not dropping right after.
Is this a joke I'm not on? Jamin always dress classy, simple, and good. Carl randomly selects between a classy simple look or looking like he would fit in the 99 for The Reaper King. Thoralf just looks good in anything, he's such a charismatic boomer.
One thing I would recommend for new players: Go to a prerelease! Prereleases help you hone your skills as a player in a low stakes setting. They usually cost about $35 (at least where I'm at in the US). Because you're building out of a sealed pool, nobody can outspend you for better cards. Most importantly though, they will put you in touch with your local magic community. Those people are going to be your best source for trading & borrowing cards, one of the cheapest ways to build your collection. Plus, at prereleases, you're guaranteed to get a sweet limited edition prerelease card!
I would recommend Magic Arena. Two things makes Magic Arena really good: teaching mechanics, simplify complicated rules/card interactions and draft games.
I have been against Arena since day one. Just felt wrong to digitize a game I've loved since Revised. Had nowhere to play locally after moving so I broke down and got it on my phone a few months ago. I only regret not giving in sooner. Especially since I primarily play limited. Can easily play without spending money. Always have someone to play with. It's a very different experience from paper Magic but the same fun in its own way.
can u guys do a explain the phases/stack/interactions etc. as someone who played back in the day and returned its very daunting at times in paper magic to know whats legal and whats not. maybe explain why people use fetch lands / how to build a multicolor deck. etc
Starter sets are great. Recently been playing with my brother-in-law (I've played for years, he has not played at all), picked up a couple starter sets, and it's been truly excellent. We just roll randomly for which decks we're playing and off we go. Sounds like the big piles of cards to make some of our own decks sounds like the perfect next step! :D Thanks for the advice.
really good video ! (go play pauper folks it's an amazing format) only thing that was slightly disapointing is the challenger standard decks you recommended at number 1 are no longer standard-legal, a disclaimer would've been great cuz buying one of those then going to a tournament to get an automatic loss is gonna feel very disheartening.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't cover MTG Arena. It's one of the best products out there IMO for teaching someone how the game works and giving you the ability to play right away. If you're talking paper products, obviously these options are all great for a new player. (I miss the Deck Builder's Toolkits!) Shared with my LGS! Also love seeing a company who has their own store who is willing to shout out and collaborate with people from other companies - like snagging Seth/Crim/Phil from Goldfish for a video, or Vince (CSI) or Andrea (Fireball). Collaborations are awesome!
My brother bought one of the Game Nights things a few years ago when we rented a place for the weekend with my other brother, it was fun and simple. We had all played Magic before but it was like.. 20+ years ago.
1. This is why I own Game Nights 2 (& 4 kinda) I have so much bulk that I have built simple mono colored decks in the past and would love to do it again. I may consider building more competitive pauper decks, but mostly just want simple decks to teach people 3. Starter commander decks might be the best way to jump into commander from ground zero or from barely playing anything, but I learned in other ways and think that's still the best way to learn. 5. I think something else should be on this list, maybe in this spot, but I'll wait. I used to buy the standard decks to get into the game, but they're typically disappointing once you really learn how to play. I'm not sure if Challenger decks follow suit, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. All in all thanks for the list! It's important to have ways to teach friends at an entry level so that the game isn't too daunting and complex right out the gate. That being said, I really love Jumpstart for teaching players. It's a great way to play and build decks. Sure a lot of the cards aren't really that valuable, but you will actually pull some valuable rares and mythics and have a lot of fun along the way while teaching people the game
Very nice and inspiring! Gonna introduce one of my friends to magic through playing pauper with him. Which deck should I build for a new player to make sure he has an easy start?
Mono red aggro is always and easy deck to pilot and you get to win more games than some of the more challenging decks, so, as a beginner, it's generally a good feeling
Cardmarket need to do a Artisan Modern format. Keep the same banned list and can be cheap. It also keeps the old-school Modern feel. Fun combo deck to brew with. Vizier and Devoted druid with a jund color Invoker. Dimir Mindcrank and Duskhouse Guildmage Golgari food. UR Battlemage, use card like Young Pyromancer and Third Path Iconoclast with Balmor, Battlemage Captain to alpha strike someone. 8 wack. Turbo mill/Dredge/Delve Tron, Eldrazi Tron, UR Tron Delver Faeries Token, BW and others Neoform, turbo dredge Neoform, Scurry Oak combo.
Make your own format. For example everyone buys the same bulk. Puts you on a level playing field and then you do stuff like trading which was loads of fun when i was learning.
My fiancé used to play some yugioh n wanted to learn magic. So I had tried explaining it to him but playing is easier to learn cuz at this point magic is hella complicated compared to when I learned in the 90s n I have learned everything else piece by piece. So I figured out pretty much the same things y'all say here. I had him download Arena to learn thru its tutorial, then had him buy the starter kit n we played the decks a bit to see the parts he liked of them more n then I upgraded them more in line with those cards using my bulk of commons n uncommons n rare binder. N for EDH I suggested the premades for the same reason but with that he can make the upgrades himself slowly over time. N then when he has more of an understanding of wut kinda stuff he likes we can design pauper decks for him to order for cheap. I'm alrdy designing a bunch to proxy to give him stuff to try out n/or play against (so I'd make some of the meta decks alongside more wacky things like stampedes of auroks n wilderbeasts
I may be a competitive broiler but my favorite that's missing on the list is definitely Pioneer Challenger decks! Buying boosters gives you random stuff, most of which is useless in constructed Magic. Starter deck cards are also too weak usually if you wanna keep playing. Precon commander decks are mostly not legal in constructed formats other than Legacy, and also there's a big chance your playgroup outgrows the power level of your precon so you have to buy more powerful cards. However, a Mono red Burn Pioneer Challenger deck costs less than 20€ in cardmarket, yet it's powerful enough to take to your LGS. It's not the optimal version but less than 50€ worth of cards is needed to upgrade it into a full Wizard Burn deck. Other Pioneer Challenger decks are pretty powerful too, and they readily contain the most important cards you need to make your deck functional. Also, the cards will stay in meta for a long time, given that Pioneer is a non-rotating format.
Also I want to mention that though Standard challenger decks were mentioned, I favor the Pioneer ones more for beginners since Standard is very expensive in the long run. The cards will rotate out in three years and usually be too weak for stronger formats, which is why I think Pioneer is a better choice as your first competitive format, since the cards stay in meta for longer, making it friendlier for your wallet..
Rule #1 for new magic players: It is more than okay to proxy cards as long as you let your friends know!! Rule #2 for new magic players: Proxying decks does not mean to find the most expensive cards you can and put them into a deck just for the sake of showing off
haven't seen the video yet but just wanna mention the thumbnail is very correct, new players should play lightning bolt. Veteran players should too. JOIN THE BURN SIDE
Jamin! my fellow balding man! Bite the bullet and shave your head! I shaved my head a bit ago and honestly it made me so much happier not worrying about losing my hair because it was already gone! I know the struggle but trust me you'll feel happier that you did! All of you are wonderful!
Ive made a set of five 2-colour decks with different archetypes but well balanced. Using bulk rares, the decks are 10-15 a piece. Under $100 sleeved up. I still play them with my experienced friends for games with simpler lines. The decks are highly on-theme, but much less powerful than tier decks.

Like up the meet-up group commons grounds :) it's a good start. They meet every Tuesday in Fhain. Or contact Spiel Film Musik or Southside 42. There is a big pauper tournament every month that is a blast. They are mostly discussed via the Pauler Berlin Whatsapp group. If you email shows@cardmarket.com we can add you to the group!
My top tip is if your friend plays yugioh, show them legacy. The card prices aren't that much worse considering yugioh gets rotated via power creep every 4 months.
My actual advice is: always try to play draft or sealed! Its the most fun mtg has to offer and you can really get better at magic playing draft, also i met my biggest friends in mtg through draft.
Great video as always! Mainly commenting for the algorithm, but might show this to some of my friends that are new to magic! Another one i would strongly recommend is 8thplacedave's video on why some lands are expensive.
Is Jamin okay? I don't know if this is normal balding or some sort of medical issue but I sure hope it's just vanity wanting to present a decent front profile
I would also suggest shared deck homebrew formats as a nice way for beginner MtG players, if they have friends they're trying to get into the game. It helps when only one person has to actually own the cards, and you can expect the same general power level of cards being played by each player (rather than the newbie having a trash deck + the more experienced guy bringing his custom-built one).
I would expect to see MTG Arena and Jumpstart mentioned (the actual jumpstart - meaning jumpstart and jumpstart 2022, not the expansion spinoffs), they are excellent and cheap ways to play
We wanted to mention jump-start but there have not been recent products so we deemed it too hard to find. Arena is great but none of us play it so we felt unqualified to talk about it :)
Ideally we'd like to offer the marketplace everywhere. But each new country comes with an unbelievable amount of work regarding laws, shipping regulations, new customer service languages and administrative staff. We don't sell cards, we allow players and collectors to buy and sell cards to each other. It makes it much harder to expand. Hopefully one day we'll get to offer the service to everyone :)
Basically she gives all your dragons double strike and she hits for 6. And theres a green card and a red card that doubles her commander dmg making her do 24 commander dmg in one hit 😂
When you said a hyper complex game I though I wandered into a yu go oh video. I started magic last year as I wanted to get back into TCGs and used to play yugi which now in my opinion is awful, and I love Magic
It's not a value buy, it's a cheap way to learn how to play though. I learned the game looking through trashy cheap commons and it's a great way of building deck building skills. Also, new players don't need good cards to understand the game, and it's much cheaper than buying a starter kit. I'm not saying it's the best option, but its a potentially fun one.
So long as they aren’t paying ridiculous amounts, $10 or so for hundreds of cards, say like 500-600 isn’t bad at all because it’s exposure. It’s not a value buy. It’s with the intention of getting familiar with the game.
Precons provide by far the most value as a sealed product out of anything wizards sells, you just don't necessarily get what you want. The decks themselves can be good out of the box and provide a very good additional value to new players who don't have the time to deck build. More experienced/older players might not want the exact deck but it is undeniable the total value of the individual cards from a precon.
Have to give this video a dislike. Unfortunately I feel like your affiliation to Cardmarket is driving the narrative too much and even leading to subpar advice. While it is obvious with this being the official cardmarket UA-cam channel, usually you handle the topic of sells much better in the context of your videos. Here it just feels like you are desperately trying to promote garbage (especially the random rares)
I'm sorry, but I'll have to put my foot down here. Yes, we are all Cardmarket employees. But the suggestion to buy bulk is an actually very strong one and one that we all stand by. New players don't care about buying Meta decks and bulk tends to not only be MUCH cheaper, but have more simple cards. Please never try to start new players on something too complicated, trying to solve a pile of random commons and uncommons and put together a deck with it is the way that magic was intented to be played and I truthfully stand by our suggestion. I'm disappointed that you would think we would tow a company line over our integrity to the game. That is not what cardmarket is about
@@FishSnackems absolutely love everything else the guys do. Just wanted to leave so feedback so that they get context on why is disliked. Because in general the video idea isn't bad/dislike worthy, but I just felt that the advice given was.
@@ForeverDayGreen they basically sell every magic product ever, so any promotion of any product is equally good or bad for them. You might disagree that buying bulk is good for beginners, but they're obviously not biased for promoting it
@@YoonnsAvec2N not quite. Promoting the whole range is much more effective rather than the same product over and over again. Cardmarket (and their sellers) make their profits due to volume of sales and promotions for niche products like the bulk rares are needed to generate interest for them.

My actual advice is: always try to play draft or sealed! Its the most fun mtg has to offer and you can really get better at magic playing draft, also i met my biggest friends in mtg through draft.
Draft/sealed is such a great format. Me and my friends have been doing draft the last few weeks and it's been a ton of fun
Limited is the best format, helps build a collection and it’s just vibes.
love this stuff, sorta like tcc
Yes to Pauper!!!
Great video as always! Mainly commenting for the algorithm, but might show this to some of my friends that are new to magic! Another one i would strongly recommend is 8thplacedave's video on why some lands are expensive.
After this video goes viral every copy of MTG clue edition will be sold out everywhere.
Toffel wearing the 10/10 fantano flannel lol
Forge is the best way to get into magic unless your set on playing paper with friends
With all due respect... is Jamin balding O.O or just the lighting
Jamin has some scalp/hair issue(s) that leave bald spots. Not sure if he’s talked much about it.
@@johnathanrhoades7751 oh i didnt know that, thanks for the heads up!
i think he makes it work, no biggie
Is Jamin okay? I don't know if this is normal balding or some sort of medical issue but I sure hope it's just vanity wanting to present a decent front profile
Jamin has Alopecia. He's not doing anything wrong, and personally, I think he's rocking his current hairstyle :)
Dont bully Jamin! :P
More Pauper content. Please
I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST! LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS! Pokemon The Grathering ahha
Friends don't let friends play magic.
Is this just a ten minute ad?
For the game magic the gathering, yes
Singles, Singles, Singles, Singles, & Singles. Please don’t ever buy basic lands just ask anyone you know for some. They have plenty to give you.
The Challanger Standard Decks you showed are not Standard legal anymore. Perhaps don't go to a Standard tournament with them 😀
These are cute but you guys still aren’t shipping to turkey/middle east 😊
Ideally we'd like to offer the marketplace everywhere. But each new country comes with an unbelievable amount of work regarding laws, shipping regulations, new customer service languages and administrative staff. We don't sell cards, we allow players and collectors to buy and sell cards to each other. It makes it much harder to expand. Hopefully one day we'll get to offer the service to everyone :)
Bulk is only recommended if you don't plan to continue playing, it's a literal scam in any other way
Also that dragon starter commander deck is busted i one shot two players with commander dmg and both of them used way more expensive decks 🤣
Random Bulk is never a good idea.
For newer players, most bulk contains lower power or simple cards.
That’s how I got into magic and I think it’s a great call
it’s funny if you play sealed with those bulks
So long as they aren’t paying ridiculous amounts, $10 or so for hundreds of cards, say like 500-600 isn’t bad at all because it’s exposure. It’s not a value buy. It’s with the intention of getting familiar with the game.
PAUPER!!!!!

Was Jaming always balding?
I think he tweeted about having alopecia a while ago
It is definitely more noticeable now. Embrace the baldness Jamin, we love you nonetheless!
Thats not a balding pattern. Thats another hair related illness, some Kind of alopercia. Comenting here tô get some news
He just has Alopecia :) if you ask me, he's rocking it
@@CardmarketMagic i agree, his hairstyle makes it work. just glad to hear it's nothing serious.
whats wrong with his hair?..
He should wear a hat
Commander precons are a trash product now, way too overpriced
Precons provide by far the most value as a sealed product out of anything wizards sells, you just don't necessarily get what you want. The decks themselves can be good out of the box and provide a very good additional value to new players who don't have the time to deck build. More experienced/older players might not want the exact deck but it is undeniable the total value of the individual cards from a precon.
Then there’s the other elephant in the room that is CEDH.
That is not what cardmarket is about
It's not hard to dislike and leave man. In my opinion they _barely_ advertise their own products and it feels fine to me
@@FishSnackems absolutely love everything else the guys do.
Anything besides UB
Nobody should buy that disgusting slop.
