I bought this guy at a Walmart in 2005 for $5.00 because the box was beat up, but the plastic shell was in perfect condition. Have been transformed hundreds of times and is still as sturdy as the first day. Even my kids played with him and is holding on.
Yeah, I'd love to see new Alternators--I mean I guess that's what the movie toys are, but I want realistic cars in that G1 robot aesthetic, and the movies don't quite scratch that itch.
Honestly the idea of collector cars transforming is cool, but i feel like they were limited by the time. Would be interesting to see them with modern engineering.
6:00 so fun fact, they weren't allowed to make it look like a weapon because of licensing issues. Honda didn't want a Transformer that turned into their car weilding weapons of war. So the US release was only allowed to have a shield. I believe this was also the case for many others.
Just the two - Windcharger and Prowl. I don't think Rumble was affected by virtue of having no hands to hold weapons. Prowl got away with his weapons because a nightstick isn't a weapon (insert rolling eyes here), and his gun was a radar scanner or something. Unless I'm forgetting someone.
I got Swindel in college when he came out. Funny thing was that I had a friend with a Jeep colored the same way, even the chrome wheels. Windcharger is one of the best of the lot in my opinion. If you had gotten the Binaltech version the engine would have had a long barrel that becomes the drive train. Thats how the gun fastens into place. Lazy engineers didnt try when it came to america they just removed the long barrel to make it legal to sell as a toy. This is the most fun transformation next to the Jeep Wrangler Hound/Swindel 😊
So the reason why a lot of Alternators figures have missing parts from the gun accessories when compared to the Binaltech figures is because of a difference in mentality between the American and Japanese car producers that deal with the license agreements. For example with Honda, the American representatives said that they didn't want their company to be associated with violent toys that have guns and stuff while the Japanese Honda representatives would be all about it(I'm guessing despite being the same franchise, the companies had different company policies depending on the country). Often times i believe the molds were designed by Takara alone and imported over to Hasbro, so the figures were already made when hasbro approached the licensing team. If a license agreements specified "no guns" they had to modify the molds so they wouldn't produce any of the weapon attachments, like the barrel windcharger is missing. I don't think i am completely on point with it, but TJOmega did an amazing video a while back in regards to the Alternators toyline that better explained the hardships of the toyline. His video made me understood why alternators and alternator-like figures don't get produced anymore, 1 because they'd be really expensive nowadays (they already were expensive to produce then) but also because of all the company licensing bullshit they have to deal with.
2:11, you can say it's an..Alternator. XD 4:03, CLEAN~ It's nice to see you doing videos with your pops. It's quite different and also brings a different perspective from someone older viewing these toys at a distance. 5:59, more like a taser held wrong.
the fact that this is old, fucking hell i still love it. even better this is one of the transformers that turned into my favorite car in my entire life. god bless Alternators back then.
Bless you TTG for being 1 of the few Transformers reviewers to show that this Alternator has minifigure compatibility 🎉! Of course, it DOES only demonstrate a Lego figure but no Minimates, so *0 OUT OFF 10!* (That is sarcasm, UA-cam. My true assessment is that this review is extraordinarily fun, especially when he gets his Dad's perspective)!
I had the Alternators version back when they were on shelves and he's up there with the best. Definitely underrated, even if he has the Dodge Viper knees. Just recently got the Binaltech version and WOOOOOOOOOOOW. WHAT AN UPGRADE. Anyway, the gun thing was thanks to the licensing agreement with Honda - Honda of America, specifically. They didn't want their brand to be associated with guns or violence. I think "war toys" MIGHT have been their wording, but that might have been Volkswagon/Porche (which is why we never got Alternators/Binaltech Bumblebee and Jazz, but we all know THAT story). So Windcharger got circumsized, and Prowl's weapon was dubbed a "radar scanner."
Alternators Prime is definitely something else lol. I have one myself and the only part of the transformation that gives me a heart attack every time is compressing his legs. They click in when they're extended as well as compressed but to get them to unclick from either form forces me to put a little more force into it then I'm comfortable with.
These were the go to collectors Transformer line at the time. At least Windcharger mould and the Hound were pretty easy to change, I have them all but have probably not touched one in 12 years. Some of the car manufacturers complained at the time about their brand being associated with war machines , and sometimes you don't get a gun at all, if requested. Which is what happened with Windcharger by leaving a piece out.
I bought every mass release Alternator I could find. So I think I missed like four of the late releases such as Nemesis Prime, Rodimus Rumble and one other. At a time when Transformers were completely abandoning realistic alt modes, the Alternator line was the lifeline that kept my interest in Transformers alive.
Fun video! Thank you! I've got a few Alternators, and I think they're mostly amazing, with some compromises on the robots. I mean, I love Ford Mustangs, but Grimlock and Wheeljack . . . YEESH!
Please do a video on the top ten least stable Transformers that are most likely to fall over or can't stand up at all and call it "Revenge Of The Fallen". Thanks.
Nice! I won this guy last year in a twitter givaway. It was the UK version. So no gun barrel. A friend 3D printed it for me. Its not my fav figure. But i am happy to own it either way
I own 2 Alternators - Dodge Ram Prime and Jeep Wrangler Hound. Prime's vehicle mode is one of the coolest bots I own, but holy hell the robot mode is one of the biggest piles of shit I've had in my collection. On the flip side, Hound is one of my favorite mid-00s non-MP G1 styled bots to be released. If you can get Hound, he's a pretty satisfying figure.
I recently picked up Decepticharge (Yellow S2000 with Hard Top and Decals) for about 55 bucks, crazy steal right now considering most are going for 100 USD plus, love the S2000 mode but the Bot mode is decent lol. I used to have the Yellow Vet or it was Battle Ravage? Maybe both. Man we are so spoiled by today's standards of Transformers. Super posable, cleaner Transformations with hardly any crazy kibbly parts hanging off, and accurate to the shows/movies (for the most part).
I'm a simple man, I see Honda S2000 I hit like 🥰 I wish we had more JDM and EUDM Transformers, like imagine a transforming Porsche Cayman, BMW M3, Nissan Skyline GT-R it would be cool!
Remember buying this back in the day, and the big controversy on line about the uncompleted engine/weapon. For whatever reason instead of the barrel it was I think marketed as a shield so I guess you could dual shield wield in battle for additional protection. Incidentally one of the only Alternators I inadvertently broke trying to flex the right hand bumper past the wheel. Snapped it clean off. While not my favorite Alternator still better designed than either Prowl or the Dreaded Prime where by the end the vehicle modes were still decent, but the bot modes had gotten subjectively lazy, and less intuitive.
It's the one version I would avise to get the Bilantech Overdrive instead. Having the long canon is so cool and it allow to trully fix the engine it is made from in car mode. Also, if you are into diecast, it's probably the Binaltech figure that has the most of it and yet, its transformation i such that there is almost no risk of scraping the paint. Probably the best figure of this series. Seriously, GET the Binaltech version of this figure, somehow, it actually is very pleasurable to transform. It's THE binaltech figure thatis fun to transform.
The reason the Engine Gun is missing the tip is because Honda of America said Hasbro couldn't give him a Gun. That's why the tip was removed at the last minute. Ironically Honda of Japan was fine with the gun and tip.
I bought this when it came out along with a few others, I don't have them now sadly but the ones I recommend you pick up are Silverstreak and Shockwave (although he might have been called something else and I can't remember what?).
Really cool as just a car! Wish they'd do a lot more TFs alt modes like this one. So they'd be actual working vehicles! Aside from the engine falling out it's a full toy of an actual real car! And the option of different roofs 🤟There's a whole other market of collectors they could hit and increase sales if they did this! Are the wheels good? I've seen other TFs with wheels like this that dry out or something that makes them break off or fall apart. Gotta definitely get this Transformer!! Is there a binaltech version of Windcharer or is the one you mentioned Overdrive? Btw, what song did you use for this vid for the intro? Thanks 👍
May I request, Alternity Bumblebee!!!??? These toys are just so cool, and I own the Suzuki Bumblebee one and, like a lot of the toys, it’s got it’s issues, like the legs. But I love it still! (And I positioned the feet to look a bit more like the G1 front hood design, as well as figured out the posing situations!)
dude, I'm a huge fan of your videos, and i was wondering if you could review the transformers cybertron 2005 crosswise, as there is almost no videos on it, much love my dude.
Hey, That Toy Guy Quick Question: Are you gonna plan to do a review on the Studio series gamer edition figures once they are released, If so which one you are interested in the most?
I dont remember the name of the alternator that was modeled after the dodge viper, but that was the one i had. As a kid it was the most complicated transformer i had lol. I remember the last time i put him away it was half way transformed because i just gave up 😂
Do you have Wheeljack yet? I assume he got an Alternators release, if not though seek out the Binaltech release. It's in the all-time top 5 Transformers figures for me personally. For a while after it came out it was considered the most difficult to transform Transformer. Wheeljack's bot mode is AWESOME too!
Arcee was an...okayish repaint of this. To think that we almost got a Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia repaint of this mold, too. (That got canceled, thankfully) Not sure why they tried to force feminine characters into such blatantly masculine molds (like this was a worse extent than the whole "repaint Tarantulas into Blackarachnia". thing)...
I bought this guy at a Walmart in 2005 for $5.00 because the box was beat up, but the plastic shell was in perfect condition. Have been transformed hundreds of times and is still as sturdy as the first day. Even my kids played with him and is holding on.

Imagine how good & awesome modern Alternators could be.
Yeah, I'd love to see new Alternators--I mean I guess that's what the movie toys are, but I want realistic cars in that G1 robot aesthetic, and the movies don't quite scratch that itch.
uhhh nah
They'd sadly be Hella expensive, speaking of that though, the old rotf leader was $45 which is about $63 now accounting for inflation
@@meganura1559 I would have guessed $99 with Hasbro's modern pricing. Just look at the mostly hollow Megatron/GI Joe hybrid.
@@rolvirata9003 true you got a point there

I have the AMAZING binaltech Arcee version, such a great figure

This Windcharger was released as Overdrive, the Omnibot, in the japanese version of the Alternators toyline, Binaltech.
Ah man this brings back so many memories having this toy. Was a little comicated transforming but loved the real cars
I bought all of the Binaltech and alternity stuff when I first got into transformers and they’re still some of my favorites and so much metal

The little pegs on either side of the cut driveshaft plug in to holes in the engine bay.
If we get legacy bayverse characters they would probably be like this in the skin, but that is still a win
