This is 100 percent true. The disfigurement is by far the worst part about all of it.

Very informative and funny at the same time. I am going through this now, it looked like I was stabalized then my TSHs went out of wack. Now the muscles in the eyes aren't working together and I am seeing an orthoptist at children's hospital in Winnipeg, so we can hopefully see where I am. This Graves Disease is NO laughing matter.

LouBou, I see you have good advice already regarding eyeball treatment. I'll need that, too. You should know that when CHF occurs because of Graves' Disease, it is reversible. My heart was so weak from CHF that I could hardly walk, and kept falling down. 2 months after the hospital, I was back to normal! EF was 35%, now 60% which is the good end of normal. EF = ejection fraction, which measure how well your heart moves blood around. I hope your heart recovers also. :)

Hello - Your surgeon will be able to provide additional information on possible risks and complications of surgery. It's true that some patients will experience double vision following orbital decompression surgery; there is a subsequent surgery (strabismus surgery) that can be done to correct the double vision if that happens.

Hello - there is actually a clinic in MI called University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. UA-cam won't let me post links when making comments, but if you look at the other videos on our channel, we have presentations from several of the doctors there. Take care!

Hi Julia - UA-cam unfortunately won't let us post links in these comments, but if you do an internet search for the acronym ASOPRS, you will find the web site for the American Society for Ophthalmic, Plastic, & Reconstructive Surgery. Even though it's a US-based organization, if you click on the "Find a Surgeon" option at the top of the screen, they do have listings all over the world. Hope this helps!

I received RAI therapy about 15 years ago for Grave's Eye Thyroid Disease, a small dose was enough for me but I'm now whit a underactive thyroid, I take levothyrosine 150mcg daily, my problem is that my face is puffed, I want to recover the beauty of my face, what kind of lymphatic drainage and diet and exercises do you recommend to me besides my thyroid hormone replacement therapy?

Hello - This is a common problem, and unfortunately, there aren't any easy solutions. Some patients find that specific triggers increase swelling - for example, alcohol, sodium, or exposure to smoke. Elevating the head of the bed can help as well. Also, be sure that your current dose of replacement hormone has you in the "normal" range of TSH as well as Free T4 and T3. For other patients, blepharoplastic (eylid) surgery can help restore appearance. You can visit the web site for ASOPRS to find a surgeon near you. UA-cam can be funny with links - the site is asoprs (dot) org.

Thanks so much, i appreciate all the information you gave me, im looking forward to have some type of lymphatic drainage of my face, is swollen, i don´t drink, or smore, neither i take sugar or salt, sugar make swollen worst too. But im affraid of going on surgery for my eyes cause after RAI i develop diabetes type II inmediately, im very controlled, i don´t like meat, i prefer a vegetarian regime, but the puffines of my face don´t go.

Hi,I want this surgery and found out last November after being hospitalized and sent to Intensive Care as my Thyroid [mom and grandmom have it] enlarged my heart and I could have had Congestive Heart Failure. Found out at a different emergency room that I have Grave's Disease. I want the surgery asap. But I have heard you end up with Double Vision. Are there vision problems really with this? I can't wait to do this surgery. I wait patiently for your reply. :)

Hello - We are a group of fellow patients; hopefully, your doctor was able to provide further guidance. The International Thyroid Eye Disease Society has good general info on radiotherapy: thyroideyedisease.org/radiotherapy/
