Ford Transit MK 7 'water in diesel' light cure . Read description

I had the 'water in diesel' light keep coming on, even though I would drain the fuel filter, by the screw under the filter housing, and no water would be present. Turn the engine off, and then straight back on again, and the light would be out, drive it 5 miles and it would be there again, some times wouldn't come on for a week, and I drive it every day. So, changed the fuel filter and in the bottom of the filter housing I noticed some very fine, what looked like, metallic glittery bits. Also, in the housing, about 2 inch up from the bottom, there are 2 pins that detect water in the diesel. I'm thinking it was this contaminate that was making the light come on. Gave it a good clean out and so far it's been O.K. 'Update'....been over a week now and the light no longer comes on, touch wood it's cured. .Let me know what you think and leave a comment.

How much fluid should come out? Will it drain the full tank or just the water?

As of today, 14.06.23, it's still fine. I drive around 500 miles a week in the van so, yeah, it's all good.

Could be a failing fuel pump
